Wolverine (Mad House)

Well the series made its premier a few days ago if I'm not mistaken, haven't come across anyone subbing yet, so I watched the raw for episode 1.

Initial Impression:

changed art direction - improvement over what we were shown last year opposed to Iron Man which was downgraded.

story - just like Iron Man...I'll wait to see how this plays out and I hope not to be disappointed this time.

sidenote: sorry, Iron Man left me a bit bitter with how they wrapped the series up...

Wolverine - still don't like the fact they kept the placement of the claws between his fingers, but at least they got rid of his ultra rat tail mullet.

action - pretty decent, with a fair amount of blood, which is to be expected. Light amount of gore, courtesy of seeing Wolvie heal.

Is this the one where the trailer made Wolverine look like '80s Gambit with a Billy Ray Cyrus mullet? Because if it is, that's pretty much the main reason no one is watching it. Taking a cool character and Japanimating him into a dork was a bad move. Changing the art direction *after* everyone has looked at your product and said, "Pass," is locking the barn after the horse is gone.

I wonder how many fans were disappointed after watching that OP then watching the cartoon...

for MH's version...seriously, how many close ups do we need of Wolverine's claws coming out of his hands in the OP? >.>

The intro& outro are what I'd expected for a Japanese version of WOLVERINE.
(Especially after seeing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfjAbXrvkFw)

Isn't Logan a little young in this version? And too tall and not to mention skinny? Why does he look like Spike?

The Japanese idea of what a manly man should look like is not generally what the western world tends to think they should look like.

Most western depictions of super-tough guys tend to look like they spend their formative years getting their faces repeatedly bashed into concrete walls.

That look seems not to go over as well in the East.

They didn't do it to a cool character, they did it to Wolverine.

Even he's got a somewhat pretty boy face.

I mean, seriously. Think Clint Eastwood. John Wayne. Hell, the entire male cast of the Expendables, well aside from Jet Li.

Most of them have that "fighter" look, bent nose from getting it broken, square jaw, thick neck, strong cheekbones.

In traditional Eastern media, usually the only time you see that look is either if a) it's a villain, b) a monstrous character, or c) if it's a buffoon/comedic character, usually representing a westerner. It's a look often assigned to ogres or demons.

So I'm not especially surprised that Anime Wolverine is a pretty boy.

Wolverine *is* a cool character. That's why he's been overused and watered down over the years. In his original appearances in X-Men, he was a stone killer who didn't care one whit what anyone thought, which was a breath of fresh antihero air in the stuffy superhero universe. That's why he immediately became the most popular character in the Marvel Universe.

He's cool; the way they've used him since then is not.

Illegally, yes. :P

But Iron Man and this should be airing on G4 sometime this year.

they save those guys for side characters, they're still badass, but not the main character

This. Big time. Plus, he's Canadian, which is an automatic +10 cool points.

I loved Wolverine when he came out. He is the reason I started reading X-Men, which in turn had me start picking up all the other comics I eventually started collecting. I really hate what the character has become over the years.

Anyhow, I have only watched the first part of episode one. Is this an adaptation of the original miniseries? Given that they show Asano and Yashida Shingen, I am assuming so.

While watching Iron Man, I kept thinking "this makes no sense... if they have to do a series set in Japan, it should be Wolverine, not Iron Man...", so this suits me fine. I kept thinking Iron Man would have been better if they'd hired an American actor who could speak some Japanese to play Tony, although I did like in one early episode where he paused and commented "I'm trying to think of how to say this in Japanese..." even though he'd shown himself to be perfectly fluent up until then.
