When I first got my Blu-Ray player I picked up the live action Speed Racer movie. Not only is it a fun little flick, it really shows off some great color depth in HD.

I third Speed Racer. Also The Thing and Big Trouble in Little China look amazing on Blu-Ray, it's insane how well those were cleaned up.

I was just going to recommend this, too. A truly amazing-looking film.

Thematically and storywise, it sits halfway between The Stuntman and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Starring everyone's favorite piemaker.

If you like Anime both Akira and Ghost in the Shell 2.0 are available on Blu-Ray.

Watchmen, Iron Man 1&2 and Serenity. I suggest watching the Firefly series on blu-ray before Serenity, though. Good stuff.

It is, and I think there's additional extras on the blu-ray as well. I'd also recommend Unforgiven, the color is so much more lush than on DVD. Repo - A Genetic Opera looks and sounds amazing on blu-ray too, if it's not too weird or musical for you.

You guys forgot Terminator Salvation and Full Metal Jacket. Troy is good on Blu-Ray as well.

Planet Earth: The Complete BBC Series. (blu-ray version) Seriously, if they showed this in stores the things would sell much better. I made the mistake of bringing this to a friend's New Years party once, the whole party just stopped to gawk at the beauty.

Okay, so far I picked up:

  • Batman Begins
  • The Dark Knight
  • Speed Racer
  • Sunshine
  • The Fifth Element
  • The Patriot
  • Pan's Labyrinth
  • Spider-Man
  • Spider-Man 2
  • Spider-Man 3
  • Inception
  • The Fountain
  • Watchmen
  • Planet Earth

I also have Supernatural Seasons Four and Five on Blu-Ray coming (they were uber cheap on Amazon and I needed those seasons to complete the set). And my dad got me Superman/Shazam: The Return of Black Adam.

Unfortunately, I have to return Sunshine, because the latest Blu-ray player firmware update enabled picture in picture compatibility but if your TV doesn't have picture in picture settings you can't turn it off, and Sunshine is apparently the only Blu-ray to have picture in picture commentary.

A fine list, really. But at least rent Contact. That goes for all of you!

Also, some older movies are getting cheap transfers to Blue Ray and ending up in bargain bins. I bought the Errol Flynn version of Robin Hood, and was completely shocked at how crisp and beautiful it was.

Although COntact's story is terrible, it is one of the most technically brilliant movies ever made.

A good transfer of Cinemascope and Vistavision films will also look tremendous. Criterion probably has plenty of those. Black Narcissus was always a favorite to watch on laserdisc back in the day. Anyone interested in classic films that look stunning should pick that one up.
