I really don't like categorizing music overly much. I call everything with guitar riffs rock and leave others to marvel whether it's Hard Rock, True Metal or Grindcore. That said, if I really wanted to get down to basics, I'd have to disagree with a lot of this. Black Metal derives from hardcore punk? Srsly?

And I resent the term 'Rap Metal' for Crossover (never mind that the entry doesn't mention pioneers D.R.I. and Suicidal Tendencies), but that's neither here nor there.

'Derived from' is bit much maybe, but there's plenty of 'old school' black metal that has very obvious punk influences both in the music and attitude. And I'm not just referring to the crappy recording quality.

Edit: (and no my forum handle does not refer to the 'True Metal' genre, you just mentioned. I only made that connection myself later. It's the name of my main brute (who was made of metal ), but who since has changed concept, so the name isn't really apropriate for him anymore either. I keep it because it's my global and people know me by that name.)

I can't really get behind this. I mean, see above with regard to subgenres of music. But if it has lead breaks, it's not punk. Especially the examples the site gives for Black Metal are IMO clearly in a metal tradition, not in a punk one.

Gah, the more I look at it, the more I find wrong. Power Metal from Speed Metal? Death Metal from Thrash? Is Folk Metal even on this map, cause I haven't been able to find it. It's cute, and I'm sure it was a whole lot of work... but... yeah.

If you look at bands like Helloween and Blind Guardian it's prety obvious to see the transition from speed metal to power metal imo.

So far I have not seen Steppenwolf mentioned on that site, for which I give them a BOO!

Heavy Metal Thunder baby!

Also did not see these guys mentioned.

So, BOO! BOO, I say, BOO!

Unless they're on there and I just didn't see them, in which case, never mind.

I must add yet another BOO!

No mention of Talk Talk in the Post Rock category? Extra BOO!

A thread doesn't neccesarily mean one is derived from the other, just influenced by it. Sure there is hardcore punk influence (not format) on early Black Metal. The song Black Metal by Venom is clearly influenced by hardcore punk, especially the opening riff and tempo. I can hear it. And you can hear classic metal in there as well, that's what the chart is all about, showing influences, not tying something down and saying 'this is all it is!'. Many of the bands are shown in multiple genres.

And Eisregen, for someone that doesn't like categorizing music, you sure seem to be able to do it well.

And I'm not sure what you meant by this as there is a Crossover Thrash category that includes DRI and ST and it doesn't really mention Rap Metal under that subgenre.

Hmm, and here I've been going by an "I know what I hate, and I don't hate that." approach to various kinds of metal. Kind of neat to see it all laid out like that, even if there are a few errors.

This is awesome, and incredibly comprehensive. No, it doesn't mention everything. But I agree with almost everything it says. Thumbs up!

Only that neither really qualify as Thrash. Compare to my personal benchmark for Thrash, Kreator, and the structure of the music has little to nothing in common (except maybe the odd track from Renewal).

And yes, I do understand the sub-categories, but as is becoming obvious, categorization only leads to argument. Especially when sub-categories beyond the really big ones seem to be kind of arbitrarily added or excluded or spread further.

(And Steppenwolf is listed under Hard Rock, Flarstux.)

Ah! So it is. Thus, I formally rescind a BOO!

Sounds like I might have to look into Melodic Power Metal some more. I like what I'm hearing there.

They aren't calling them Thrash though, they are calling them Crossover Thrash which includes elements of hardcore punk and thrash. I would agree that those two probably lean more towards hardcore punk but I can also definitely hear the thrash elements, but the point of the list is to show influences and not rigid distinctions.

This map really fails for not mentioning the greatness that is Savatage under US Power Metal by the way.

Since Streets maybe. Their older albums are pretty straightforward power metal though.
