Frequent crashes since I19
Some initial questions...
Is this on a Desktop or a Laptop (netbook or notebook)?
Could you post HijackThis and CoH Helper reports?
(Guide here http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=231628 )
Have you tried updating your drivers? This page here is useful for updating drivers, for AMD/ATI card users (I noticed you're using a Radeon HD 5800 series).
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
Presuming none of the above turns up anything useful... Some questions about the environment your computer is and has, been used in.
Do you have much dust in the room, around the computer or just in general in the building?
Do you have any furry animals inside or with access to the room(s) you use your computer in? (eg. cats or dogs)
Have you had any recent blackouts (power failures), brownouts (lack of electricity, often "visible" by lights dimming for more than a few seconds), or power spikes (harder to diagnose, often result in damage with noticable effects to things like Mircowave LCD panels, computers, televisions, etc.)?
Here's hoping we can find the solution.

PS. If you're wondering why so many questions? This amusing little article may lay some, although admittedly not much, light on the subject. http://www.pcauthority.com.au/News/2...e-mondays.aspx
I especially like this line..
And somehow, youre expected to dole out solutions based on descriptions that may run along of the lines of when I push the button, the thing refuses to come out how it should despite possibly being in a completely different state (physically that is, not just a state of mind). |
Between the Loyalists and Resistance, I'd be tempted to support Praetorian Hamidon.
One side uses mind police and will "disappear" you and the other uses poison gas and bombs on civilians. Hamidon? He'll just have a tree eat you. Much simpler. If we're all going to be oppressed and/or killed by someone, it might as well be the walking trees. At least they don't speak in annoying code or doublespeak. They just devour you. |

I've been having some crashing trouble, don't know if its related. If it is then:
Do not open contacts tab.
Avoid information tabs and the like.

I've been having this exact same problem. For some reason, the crashes are worse on my villains than on my heroes -- my 50 SS/Will brute has been virtually unplayable, with the game crashing any time I open my contacts list and frequently crashing when entering combat.
ATI users are reporting in the other threads that 10.9 of the driver seems stable.

I went with a 5850 card. Since I mostly play MMORPGs I couldn't see what my extra $100 was buying me.

Everything was fine from August to October .. November I noticed some crashing during AE or High mob number missions, at first i thought it was the game .. others had problems dc'n .. but my issues caused a restart wich worried me.
Flash forward ..
After the crashing became more common I noticed my pc cranking up big time during those instances processor and with that the fans kicking in higher..
granted I had air conditioner on during aug-sept room was cooler, but i was considering an overheat issue
but the processor temps were fine, more than fine..
hmm I thought video card overheat (i run 2 ati's/crossfire).
I tried the old school method of taking side case off n placing small fan next to it and presto bingo bango no more crashing..
Im getting a new case just being lazy but the newer processor and mb ontop of the games new ultra modes and obviously higher content/people/graphics is just enough to push my cards over the edge on heat. it will cause just enough of a delay to crash ur system sometimes.
No Air Cond on sometimes during the past months after summer started fading .. an the game cranking up my system tells me something is drawing more from me.
Atlas chatting fine or base building fine.. solo mish set low fine .. 8 man mish n bang crashola .. thats what made me thing graphic's cards with all the effects flying..
Can't hurt to try it, take side case off n aim small fan into it.. if solves the porblem get another case fan or case, I have watercooled fan for cpu but now i need push more air thru for the vid cards .. after the holidays lol
Good Luck
I've seen it where a case couldn't handle the heat but that is pretty rare. Most people who build their own systems don't buy $20 cases with "free" PSUs then stuff in $400+ full sized video cards.

Just conscious and lucid enough to apologise for the lack of reply... sorry, ball got rollin' at least (eventually).
As for the drivers.. on some level I wouldn't mind having a few issues here, at least I'd have experience. This computer seems to just shrug off every potential snag though.. latest drivers, checking every 2-4 weeks.
Running 10.10 and have been since 23/10, no issues.
Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 Vapor-X
My biggest problem is software conflicts, from what I can tell. And one rare intermittent issue with keyboard drivers that I've ignored (apart from updating them once without any change) since I just have to unplug & replug the keyboard to fix it.
Anyway.. crazy as I am I'm off to install the 11.11 drivers. I hope the 10.9 drivers and extra cooling fix it for you.
Oh and yeah, be wary of Windows Update. I did have several crashes and failed installs when I allowed windows update to update my graphics drivers. Do it manually and tell windows to keep its mitts off 'em.
I never let Windows update my graphics. Learned that lesson a while ago. In the meanwhile, the 10.9s don't work for me. Nor running in fullscreen mode. I also disabled all non-essential startup programs and services. Still had problems. I don't believe it's heat or the processor either. I can run games that are significantly more intensive than COH with no problem. In addition, I can get crashes on minimum settings (which I wouldn't use long term they look terrible). This is so frustrating.
Thanks for all the help and suggestions folks.

10.6 Drivers crashed out twice, so they're not looking like the solution.

Nothing is going to really come up in any error reports because nothing is set up to watch vid cards temps and since ur system is only worried about cpu temps u wont see anything there.
Last time but its worth a shot to check this, took me a week to realise what my issue was and funny thing is this happened to a friend ingame bout 1.5 yrs ago. because of his issue back then its what made me go there.

Same here - video freezes, audio continues - very frequently when interacting with the UI. I managed to halt the client three time in a row in Peregrine City just by mousing over Detective McLeod in the contacts window. This definitely seems to be related to something unstable in the UI.

If your having air flow issues, consider bundling up your cables. However, without pictures it would be hard to determine what exactly is the cause.

Maybe CoH isn't intensive enough to trigger higher fan speeds. idk, your issues have just been
Short of a full outright graphics driver sweep to remove any traces of 10.10 or 10.11 I don't get it.

I'm hoping someone could help. Since I19 I've been having frequent crashes (blue screen, video card stops, computer resetting itself) especially when grouped on TFs. I've tried disabling the Anti-Aliasing and the anisotropic filtering, which helps.
I've attached my dxdiag, if anyone has any thoughts I would most appreciate it.
