What is this thing?

Every so often, this appears at the bottom of my screen. Clicking "off" gets rid of it, otherwise it doesn't disappear even when zoning. It doesn't show on regular screenshots, so I took a photo in order to display it here. Anybody knows what this does, and if I'm supposed to be seeing it at all?

I have no idea.( Helpful right?) But it looks like it could be /demorecord? Of course, I don't know what that looks like.

I doesn't look like the CoH UI, so it's probably something on your computer.

The only unique-looking term I see there is "inpVel." Googling that gives a bunch of topics on valve control and "Computer Simulations - Finite Element Program." Do you have some kind of simulator on your computer that could be running in the background? Like "Seti at home?"

It's vaguely possible (if this isn't anything you're doing intentionally) that the machine has been hijacked remotely by someone using it for distributed processing. Might be worth running the usual suite of antivirus/adblocker/anti-malware apps and doublechecking that your firewall is in place.

I have never seen that before - any particular key combo or action bring it up, or does it "just show up?"

(Doesn't show up with /screenshotui 1 either?)

You don't start COH with anything but the launcher? Does it ever appear on test (if you use that?)

Does your computer ever ask in a bad-80s-computer-voice "Would you like to play a game?"

One process can hook into a second process and in process explorer look like it's part of the second process. So, just because you're seeing those entries under CoH doesn't mean they are actually *part* of the CoH client.

This looks like some sort of screen capture software.

Have you gone through your installed programs to see what's there?

Usually shows up in the middle of a fight, so there's probably a key combo that brings it up, but I haven't found it yet.

It's not.

Trust me, I can recite from memory what each of the processes loaded on my computer does. I am extremely paranoid about what gets on my computer, and I can guarantee that this is not an external thing.

I really get annoyed when people doubt what I say. I know my software. Here, have a hex dump of cityofheroes.exe, if that'll make you happy:

I've gotten the same thing upon occasion, Leandro. I have no clue what the hell it is or what caused it to display (I'd like to say key press combo, but I've never been able to duplicate it intentionally).

I wasn't "doubting" you, just pointing out a possibility. You know, trying to help, like YOU asked us to. Given your ******* response, I hope you never find out what this is, and it steals all of your personal info to boot.

Enjoy!

THANK YOU. Now I know it's not just my account that is marked with a magical flag that makes this appear.

My question wasn't "Is this some spyware? Is my computer infected?". If I thought this was something on my computer external to COH, I would not have posted in the COH forums. I know this is part of COH. The question is, what is it.

Okay, maybe you do. But how do we know that?
I can't count how many posts I've seen from people who were absolutely dead certain about something.... and completely wrong. And yeah, they got insulted too. Even though they were wrong.

Ah, I see. And being a jerk to someone trying to help, what do you know about that?

I didn't get annoyed until the strings dump from Process Explorer was put in question. If I were faced with that, I would not think "that person's computer has some malware that is specifically targeting COH's executable". That's a stretch. I would look for those strings in my copy of the program (we all have COH) and see that they in fact are there.

The very first thing I did when I first saw this window was to md5sum my COH executable and compare it with the executable in 2 other computers to ensure it hadn't been tampered with. If I thought my computer was infected by anything, I wouldn't even waste time running a full antivirus scan: I'd boot up Ubuntu, use it to back up my personal folders, and reinstall Windows from scratch. I don't trust "cleaning" a computer that's been compromised, I go for the nuclear option to ensure safety.

I am extremely direct in my way of communication. If that makes me a jerk, then apparently I know a lot about it. Let me quote you a book:

Quote:
Argentines love to talk. They communicate directly, openly and often loudly. In Argentina there is no taboo in the use of foul language. A respectable old woman will swear like a sailor and no one bats and eye. Fools are not suffered lightly and anyone behaving in a pretentious or obnoxious manner will be sharply reprimanded, sometimes with just a simple gesture of the hands. Political correctness does not exist in Argentina because it would only impede getting your point across. If you are a little overweight your nickname might be ‘el Gordo’, or if you have a dark complexion they might call you ‘Negro’ or if you happen to be of Polish descent, ‘el Polaco’. No offense is intended, none is taken and there is no false morality to confuse the issues. It is evident when Argentines communicate with one another that their freedom of speech is real. Although Argentines are extremely patriotic and will not hesitate to tell you that their country has the tallest mountains, the tastiest beef, the most beautiful women, the finest wine and the best soccer players in the world, they will also be quick to point out that their country is run by corrupt politicians and is full of bullshitters and crooks. The truth is “which country isn’t?”, but Argentines in particular always seem to be just as aware of their own shortcomings as well as they are of other’s. This keen sense of discernment is illustrated by the vast quantity of words used to accurately describe an idiot, a braggart, a liar, a scam or the quality of anything from personal character to household appliances. The Argentines use these words with such frequency and passion that the unsuspecting foreigner will eventually have to ask “what is a ‘boludo’ and why can’t I find it in my Spanish dictionary?”
In other words: cultural thing. You'll consider every last argentine a jerk. We don't tiptoe around with words. I am actually a lot more careful with words in this forum than I ever am in real life, and I still manage to offend people from time to time.

exactly, this looks like some sort of screen capture or video recording software that is accidentally hooked into COH and running when COH is run.

My best guess is that you have some video capture/video recording software on your computer.

Again, this is part of the COH executable (look inside the .exe). Fuzzy Kittens above replied that they've also seen it.

Yes well I saw you post later more information. It still is some form of video capture software, but it appears to be part of coh. Who knows apparently no one here.

I always thought CoH had a built in video capture option but no one used it. Vaugly remember it being mentioned ages ago to me. Then again i am a ditz half the time so who knows.

edit:

there are / commands for demo recording so maybe that is some menu for the built in demo recorder

Demo Commands Description
/demodump stop demo record/play
/demofps set demo playback frames per second
/demopause point to stop and loop same frame (in msec)
/demorecord record a demo
/demostop stops the current demo record or playing
-demoplay Command Line switch. use from the run command on the Windows start bar

"c:\City of Heroes\gamescohcityofheroes.exe -demoplay"

Looking around of these lines in CityOfHeroes.exe makes me think it is some sort of builtin debug UI.

I got this once during Going Rogue Beta. It's definitely something embedded in CoH. Like Leandro and Fuzzy Kitten, I've never been able to make it appear on command.

Out of curiosity, are any of those buttons/boxes clickable? Or are they static and dont' change/aren't clickable? Maybe we'll get some more ideas on what it actually doesor is possibly doing (if anyting) if you give us a little more information on what AT/set you're playing, when it happens (you said when you're fighting, but are you Hovering or anyting like that?), or if anything else is going around your computer (are you performing voodoo love ritual summoning at the time?).

It's very odd. Maybe it's just Argentine thing.
