Slotting Hover?

hi there. quick question:

is it worth it to slot hover for flight speed at all? or am i going to bump up against some kind of limit to how fast hover can be?

thanks!

Hover's only speed limit is the fly speed cap itself.

thanks. and what is that?

It's in the 70mph range. That said, I don't slot it for speed, by mid levels it's Plenty Fast, moreso now that we have Swift inherent. I just put a kismet and a karma -kb in it.

I slot hover with one fly. With the boost from swift (only run slotted) its pretty decent for me since I rarely run inside a mish. Not sure what the cap on hover is, but it might be as high as the cap on fly. I can't recall the exact speed, but it was between 40-50 with speed boost and still not capped.

Flight Speed cap is 58.63 mph, or so, at level 50.

I don't think you will be able to hit the fly speed cap with hover. According to Mids, a lvl 50 defender with Hover 6 slotted with lvl 50 fly IOs and swift 6 slotted with lvl 50 fly IOs gets to 41.6 mph.

Interstingly enough, when i made a build with a SR scrapper and added the above plus quickness 6 slotted with lvl 50 fly IOs the mph was 41.5 mph in mids.

In short, I dunno...

According to Paragonwiki all flight powers are capped at 58.63 MPH. Hover's base is only 21.3 MPH and it mentions that with 3 Fly SOs it goes up to 28 MPH. I don't know how old these numbers are but based on my experience with Hover these values still seem pretty reasonable.

Basically this means there's no way you can get to the hard cap of Hover using just Hover alone. Even 6 slotted (if you actually wanted to waste 6 slots in it now) you can't get it close to Fly's speed so there's no way to "overslot" it. So make it as fast or slow as you want.

Hover has a +50% speed buff and -51% unenhanceable speed debuff (it's actually split into a +50% unenhanceable buff and -101% unenhanceable debuff).

At level 50 the base speed is 21.48mph, so Hover has 10.74mph of enhanceable buff. So each SO would about 3.5mph mph and at the soft cap (+95%) you're adding 10.2mph to your Hover speed.

Swift's buff is 1/5th that of Hover.

I don't thinks it's practical to get to the fly speed cap without Siphon Speed or Accelerate Metabolism. My Rad Def uses Power Boost and Accelerate Metabolism and so is at the cap most of the time.

So, is it worth slotting for Fly Speed? On a ranged toon, maybe not, but I usually add a second anyway. On a melee toon I always add a second Fly Speed.

not a bad mule for LotG either, if you leave it at the default slot.

FWIW, the GvE Jump Jet power will cap Hover's speed for 30 seconds. Can be useful if you are between lvl 6 and 14 with no "real" travel power.

Although now - with inherent swift and hurdle - Ninja Run is really, REALLY good.

I find a Fly Speed in both Hover and Swift makes hovering plenty fast.

You'd have to push to hit the cap with it, since it's the same cap as Fly. And Fly does hit it a lot easier. (Two Fly Speeds are enough, maybe even one...)

I always slot Hover with a fly and Swift with a fly and if I have leftover slots I will slot Hover with two more additional slots.

Off by about 12mph. But, I suppose that's in the 70mph range depending on your perspective.

Some powersets do have a Swift-like power in them; Super reflexes, Soldiers of Arachnos, and possibly electric armor come to mind...

My scrapper has both Quickness and Swift one slotted with a lvl50 Fly IO, two large improved movement bonuses, and hover slotted with two BotZ (and a single lvl50 defence IO). Total speed is 39.06mph. Not the fastest, but it moves me around at a decent rate in missions, and if I need to, the jump pack will boost me to the fly cap for a short while.
