Just wondering when Disney got the rights and why would they want to do it. Guess they think they can do a good job of it. Only time will tell. And to get Johnny Depp playing Tonto? Okay!!

I am a big Johnny Depp fan but I am more than a bit unhappy and put off with him cast as Tonto.

I would think there are hundreds of qualified young Native American actors who could do a good job on it.

I pray that they don't go with the draft were the Lone Ranger is going up against werewolves.

Shades of Avatar: The last Airbender?

It does strike me as an odd choice.

That being said, this was the old B&W tonto:

and one of that actor in color:

Depp isn't actually that far off...

Now whether or not Depp can actually pull off PLAYING a Native American... well... entirely different story.

I like Depp in many of the movies he's done. But I really can't see why they chose him to play Tonto unless they were going for something comedic out of him. I just can't see him trying to play this role completely straight-faced serious. While I might be interested in seeing a reboot of the Lone Ranger played seriously/heroically I don't really want to see a comedic version of this. A sad ripoff of Blazing Saddles would simply be sad.

Why does it have to be a Native American playing a Native American?

By that logic, only American's should play Americans. Only cross dressers should play crossdressers.

See the silly in that

Johnny Depp is a great actor, and if he can pull off the part, so be it.

That said, he has Cherokee heritage. So your wish is granted.

I did not know that. But I still think there would be younger guys to play the part.

However towards the NA to play NA stuff. I prefer men to play men and women to play women. "Roots" with the Africans played by latinos, Asians, and caucasians would be a bit silly as well. So I am going to dispute where you took your "logic" up to a point.

Remember I am a big Depp fan (I cannot wait to see The Tourist) but I don't need him in everything I see.

Yeah I'm not really upset with his casting because he's not Native American "enough".
I'm just not sure he'll play it seriously and respectfully enough to the source material.

I'm worried they are going to try to update Tonto by "lightening" him up and make him less stoic/noble by using Depp's comedic talents.
I just don't want to see a "happy-go-lucky" Tonto.

It makes financial sense to have Depp in the film. That's just the facts.

Well I can't really argue with that. Depp's "star power" would probably help any movie he was cast in regardless of the role.
Still it's going to be interesting to see how he handles it. I'll be hoping that he won't make a clown out of Tonto...

There are of course exceptions.

However, Johnny Depp I still think can play a Native American just fine. How he plays the part may or may not be to people's liking however.

I think he can pull of a serious roll, but like Lothic has said, he doesn't always go that route.

Depp's easily one of the best actors of his generation. Sounds like some people have forgotten that he does serious/drama pretty damn well because of a couple of higher profile roles. And sure, he's got a lot of pull in Hollywood, but I doubt that he'd get to override the director and camp it up if that's not the tone of the film.

Yes I'm actually aware that Depp is a good actor and is capable of handling a wide range of roles. I'm even willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that he won't "ham" up Tonto too much.

But if you were to look over the films Depp has done there are far more well-known Jack Sparrow and Willy Wonka type characters than George Jung and Dean Corso types. I think it's reasonable to at least assume, at first glance, that plugging Depp into the role of Tonto might suggest that they wanted someone who can handle "quirky comedy" more than "stoic seriousness". Let's just say if they had picked a guy who was known only for playing non-comedic roles (like for the sake of argument someone like Daniel Day-Lewis) then the focus/expectation of this movie would be much more clear-cut to me.

I'm just hoping that Depp will give Tonto one of his more serious, non-clowny efforts.

Like I said...It's not likely going to be up to him.

And like I said the people making the movie CHOSE him for the role for some reason.
If they want him to play it serious he will.
But if they want him to play it campy that's what he'll give them.

I never implied or suggested that the way he'll play the role was a decision that he himself would have complete control over.

you kinda did.

"I hope Depp will give Tonto one of his more serious, non-clowny efforts"

Replace "will" with "gets to" and I wouldn't have posted

As far as why they chose him...it could go either way...he's pretty much equally good at serious or oddball so I wouldn't read anything into the choice as far as what tone they're going for.

I think they chose Johnny Depp, because he's a box office draw.

I went to the theater to watch Public Enemies, because of Johnny Depp.

As for why not go with someone younger. I wouldn't exactly say Johnny Depp looks old.

No argument about Depps' draw factor. He is awesome and always has been.

But I am trying to imagine who could be the Lone Ranger with Depp playing a sidekick character.

I guess I was just thinking cast 2 young guys (under 40 and preferably closer to 30) so you can have a long running series of movies.

I'd want Depp as Butch Cavendish. He'd rock as the villain in this.

I strongly suspect that they'll actually be going for "quirky seriousness". Someone who, no matter what goes on, can walk through it with a calm and dignified attitude. This would allow them a bit of humor, without breaking his character at all.

I can see him doing that. I withdraw my objection to him being Tonto.

But I still think he'd rock as the bad guy.

No, you simply choose to assume I didn't know how actors and directors work together to make movies and decided to be picky about my choice of words despite the very obvious point I was making.

But to be perfectly clear so that you don't get confused again:
"I hope Depp will give Tonto one of his more serious, non-clowny efforts because the Director involved will allow him to do so."

Was that good enough for you that time or will I have to use extra words to over-explain everything just for your benefit?

Well there's always a "chance" for that outcome, with Depp involved.

But ironically Depp is such a versatile actor that I could see him playing Tonto from any point across a large spectrum of characterizations ranging from "quirky" to "serious" or anything in-between depending on the tone of the movie they are trying to make. Once again I'm just hoping that any humor from Depp's Tonto will at least appropriate for what we'd expect from a stoically loyal partner of the Lone Ranger and not be geared toward being overtly "silly".

Not at all. I try not to assume anything about people when reading what they write...I just go by what's written. And I already pointed out where your intent and what you wrote crossed purposes. So nah, your yellow writing is unneeded
