FA protection
So I get the impression that people who want to make Fiery Aura survivable go to town on defense with lots of IO set bonuses, weave, and anything else they can cook up.
I assume there is really no other viable option right? I mean the enhanced resistance of 35% is pretty poor, and getting to around 50% with tough doesn't even seem worth bothering with to me. I have contemplated going for recharge and hoping I can have healing flames up enough to pull through the hairier fights, but I suspect that won't really cut it. It's a shame you can't get real set bonuses for resistance. |

I use my SS/Fire just to farm. He only has melee attacks because I havent respec'd out of them, with 4 AoEs and one cone, and a toggle damage aura, he just is a living pain. Because i specifically target fire dealing mobs I only need fire resistance, which is capped at 90% with no oranges. I pop purps for defense. When not atttacking with AoEs I am converting 3 of a kinds to purps. grab 1500 tickets, rinse, repeat. Tons of cash to be made. nice LoTG drops from time o time at the ticket exchange. A decent day farming can bring in a couple hundred mill, sometimes more. Only real danger at any time is boredom.

I can be found, outside of paragon city here.
Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.
I didnt know people actually did the gold class rolls with their tickets, i do bronze. :P
And to the OP a mix of def and rech is prolly your best bet if its normal play and not fire farming in AE you're building for.

Fiery Aura is only good for farming, I'm cereal
@Caucasiafro
Just to ask, what gold-class recipe level range do you get LotG's from? I do the same thing with my Energy-Capped SS/Elec and would love to figure out where those rare buggers come from.

I must be extremely lucky, cause i've done all of like 5 days (part-time) farming in the last month, and have had 3 drop, various levels. (My farmer is a brand new toon I spent 2 days 50-ing last week) About 1/3 time I set the gold to 25 hoping for a LoTG, and othertimes I just let it roll whatever level I am at. Most of the crap is worthless, or worth maybe 2-8 mill, but those LoTG are easily worth 100 mil + each. The LoTGs have dropped at various levels, not just the 25th. So I just keep on hitting the gold recipe, and trying not to cry too loudly when I get a rock in my ToT bag.
I don't play my Fire/Fire Brute to be a tank. I play him like I'm playing a hand grenade. Jump in, do as much damage as possible, die, and then explode back to life and pick off the survivors.

Besides, you can't get debt badges without debt. Like I said that one time, if you're not dying, you're not trying.
it also matters as to what primary you're going to use.
something with a lot of mitigation, and it's less important to squeeze out every last drop of defense. Dark Melee works wonderfully............ i mean WONDERFULLY. two self heals, two end drains, two power boosts, a self rez, extra dam from FA, and added mitigation from -ToHit, can't go wrong.
but say you were going something like electric melee, then, probably +def and then recharge.
but tankiness is not what you should be using FA for, killiness is (i know they aren't real words, but we're talking about superheroes here). dude, you haven't experienced this game yet until you stand in the middle of a mob with blazing aura going and drop a burn patch with your fury near max....... it makes you all tingly in your naughty parts!
edit, i spelled fury "furry", which is inexcusable! NEVER drop a burn patch when you have a furry, they get all singed.
Oh yeah, that was the time that girl got her whatchamacallit stuck in that guys dooblickitz and then what his name did that thing with the lizards and it cleared right up.
screw your joke, i want "FREEM"
Whenever I build a fire armor toon for defense, I find myself falling short of 35%, let alone the magical 45%. It's always been better for me to go +rech.
/gignore @username is the best feature of this game. It's also probably the least used feature.
Can't get enough Hazy? /chanjoin robo's lounge today!

I have a WP brute for when I want to feel durable. I'm also working up a SR one if I wish to be godly. I only did the FA one because they finally gave me back my burn. Mmmm, burn.
Too many alts to list.
Getting 30 s/l def is reasonably easy for FA, 35+ depends on the primary and how many Kinetic Combats you can slot and how well you know how to build for def and not gimp build.
I know that i have made a MIDS build with a fire/fire brute at 40 s/l def with help of the 3% pvp def proc. and still get 125% rech and 52 s/l resist
however i roll a dark/fire on freedom with 30 s/l def and he tears it up w/o the fitness pool since i made him i19 ready. the 2 +end powers are awesome and 2 heals are heaven. 1 medium purple puts me over 45% def and then i still have the rez for anytime i may die. Id suggest dark/fire to anyone thinking of making a FA toon.
also with regards to the bronze rolls. 35-39 bronze does get you LOTG def recipe and LOTG def/end recipe. I just got a LOTG def 5 mins ago b4 i wrote this. made about 1.3 bil in like 3 days of farming tix and bronze rolls.

The other is a Broadsword/FA scrapper who can flatline in seconds, or if has a chance to stack his autofiring Parry can stand in the midst of a big pack of meleers laughing and let them burn to death.
Adding recharge to a FA helps a lot because it gets Healing Flames back up more quickly and that's probably your key power in terms of survivability (as well as meaning your big hitting attacks recharge more quickly so things die quicker).
There was an excellent, if sometimes hostile, discussion about AoE Brutes last week. that is what convinced me to farm up a SS/Fire/Mu real quick. Great decision, because it's a money maker. Not going to say it is the best. But with 4 AoEs, and a cone, plus a toggle damage aura, I just sit in the middle of a +2/x8 spawn and melt them. No amount of mitigation from a primary will help in this situation. IMO I fight only Fire damage mobs, my Fire res is 90%, so no oranges, and I sit and 3 into 1 purps whenever not spamming AoEs, so I always have 35% plus def running as well. I take limited damage, and it goes very smoothly.

If you mean the discussion, it wasn't boring, and parts were quite informative.
If you mean the farming, kinda boring after you get over the amazement at the killing power of the build. But the cash is endlessly good.
Like everyone in the thread has said, Fiery Aura gets one of the best heals of any armor set available to brutes (Dark Regeneration being the other). This means that, while defense is (of course) a good way to build survivability, you can also make survivability gains by slotting for recharge. It means you get to use Healing Flames more often to keep yoursefl alive, hit Fiery Embrace, Burn and your Build Up more to drop enemies before they drop you, and lets Rise of the Phoenix come back in a reasonable amount of time if anything does go wrong.
You could also consider trying to get some +HP, as it will make Healing Flames heal for even more.
For a fun FA, run with FA/Claws brute. I slotted for both recharge and defense, every little bit from both helps. Just got mine to fifty last week. Got a purple drop running council right after I dinged. Its a fun fast set, for me it is like the regen set of the tanks/brutes. Claws does a good job of building quick fury, and you have freaking claws.
