IO Sets (worth it or not?)
Nemesis is a bit of a one-trick pony. Vengeance makes them hard on purely Defense-based tanks, like Shield or Ice. On anyone else, especially something with Willpower's layered mitigation, try not to kill the lieutenants early and they're a total pushover. Not always fast, but an annoyance at worst. You might want to run it against one or two other groups. I find the Rikti give a good spread of different threat types, but that's just me.

In the past that tank would always eat them for breakfast rather easily.
Heck..... a couple years ago I used to farm lev 52 Malta in PI (with bosses staged for a group of 8) SOLO and had a blast with it
I am curious to see how the Malta would do against it now......
the CoT were never a threat much at all...... so it's hard to say

Oh.....
since I have rarely ever used any of the planners of build guides and such,
I figured this would be easier to understand the slotting I have used for the tank for about a year or so now;

After I came home tonight I went looking around WW and browsing the sets and such.
It occured to me that I haven't done a solo mish with that tank in a while.... so I went ahead and got the Dark Watcher's mish in the RWZ (at +2 x4) to refresh my recollection on what made this tank tick in the first place In the mish vs. all those Nemesis Colonels (with Warhulk bosses and stuff too) it was a friggin breeze. My green and blue bars barely moved the whole time. Next mish in the arc I upped the diff to (+3 x5) and it went well. Would have been even better if I weren't so dang tired. Gonna sleep on it and see how my mind untangles this mystery before me in the regards of slotting, sets and what not. Mucho confused right now.... but in a good way |
Spend some time with Mid's builder to see how IO sets and Frankenslotting can improve your character. One example: you have a defense power currently slotted with 3 Defense IOs and one EndRdx IO. That's good slotting with capped Defense and good EndRdx.
Now replace it with 4 Gift of the Ancient: Defense, Defense/EndRdx, Defense/Increased Run Speed and Defense/EndRdx/Rech. Now you get capped Defense, good EndRdx plus some added Recovery, a small increase in Endurance and a small increase in run speed. On its own, those bonuses are not much, but when you stack those bonuses with others, it all adds up to a significant improvement to your character.
In some cases, certain powers can benefit from a mix of enhancements because one set doesn't have everything that power needs. One example is Hot Feet from Fire Control -- it uses a lot of endurance, so you want as much EndRdx as you can get. It is a damage power, so you want as much damage as you can get. It needs at least some accuracy. It can also slow foes, causing them to stay in its area to take more damage. Standard SO or common IO slotting is 3 EndRdx, 1 Acc, 2 Damage. Unfortunately, you get less than full damage, not really enough accuracy and no Slow. You'd need 10-12 slots to get all that.
With Frankenslotting, you can get a lot of that. Scirocco's Dam/EndRdx and Acc/Dam/EndRdx; Tempered Readiness Dam/Slow and Slow/EndRdx/Rech; a Acc/Dam (Nucleous) Hami-O and a common EndRdx gets you capped EndRdx and Damage, good Accuracy and some Slow. Plus a couple of small bonuses.
It takes some experimenting (in Mids) to see what works. Not sure? Feel free to come here to the forums and post what you are considering, and some of the helpful people here will make suggestions.

As for 400 mil not being enough...
Depends on what he's doing. I did a frankenslot on my Kin/Elec defender and it didn't even touch 400mil for the final build. She's killer and can end drain darn near anything.
You don't always need billions of infl, and you don't need to make the entire build in one day. Get what you can and work up to the rest.
IMO, anyways.

I'd also recommend starting with Frankenslotting and using A-Merits to get a couple of the pricier IOs such as the LoTG +7.5%, the +Def Steadfast Protection, etc.*
My personal contribution is to say to be careful when buying cheap yellow IO's for Frankenslotting. There's a few "uncommon" (yellow) sets that still require rare salvage to craft. Not that they can't be a worthy addition to your build but if you just need a Dam/Acc then there may be a cheaper IO that only uses uncommon salvage than one needing a 2mil inf Prophecy or something. And that 5k Dam/Acc IO recipe will be less of a bargin when you see you need millions in salvage to build it. Look at your options between all the available sets in your catagory (melee, defense, PBAoE, etc).
*Or the marketer's solution to only buy LoTG's with your merits, sell 'em and use that money to buy things like the Steadfast...

Yes as someone who build pretty much everything with IO sets ( I generally dont like frankenslotting ) they can make a huge improvement.
And you dont have to get the MOST expensive sets in the game to get improvement.
The hard things I can do--- The impossible just take a little bit longer.
If numbers are so much more important than a teammate who is fun to play with, forget about the game altogether and go play with a calculator instead. -Claws and Effect-

I think some people get caught up in the idea that slotting IOs isn't worth the effort unless you spend billions on it. They forget that you can be 95% as effective without having to spend a fortune on it.

I would invite the OP to come on down to the tanker forum and ask for some suggestions there. We regularly advise players on how to improve their builds using IOs, and not every build has a "the sky's the limit" budget.
Specifically, a lot of super-expensive WP tanker builds you'll see are soft-capping defense, but even getting 25-30% defense will give a big boost in survivability, without costing billions.

I agree with using the 2nd build for making IO sets. For what it's worth, your first build already works for you and you spent inf slotting it. Leave it for now.
I would not advise making your 2nd build until the Fitness inherent. Why respec in a couple months? Enjoy the build you have now, learn it's strengths and weaknesses. Sounds like you're doing that with some solo missions on different difficulties. Try other enemy types like Carnies and Arachnos (you already mentioned CoT, Malta, Nemesis, Rikti) for high level content to make sure you know your boundaries for the most common enemy types.
I would definitely recommend Mids, it's a good way to do some offline analysis and it's much easier to respec in Mids than in the game. You get great stat information on the powers and the effects of slotting.
I recommend using A-merits for the really expensive stuff as well. At 1-2 A merits, it's much more affordable than x hundred million inf if you're talking about a stash of 400 million. You can game the market to increase your stash or buy cheap, but if that's not your thing, you can just run missions and be able to 'afford' those really expensive enh from a vendor instead of the market. Buy the other stuff at the market.
I do think IO sets can help. Frankenslotting is good, too, depending on what you want. When you're in Mids, you can see what your Defense and Resistance look like, maybe there's some sets you want to get in particular that give you bonuses to up some Def/Res, maybe it's not worth it.
You can bypass Set IOs and HOs and all that jazz and still probably do reasonably well with just SOs and Common IOs, especially on teams. As a tank, though, there is a special incentive for sets to store up against a few weaknesses, cause sometimes, if the tank goes down, everyone goes down.
I IO all my toons.
I fully frankenslot them at 25, and at 35 I start to replace my frankenslots with the sets I intend for them to keep. Doing this bit by bit, I stretch the expense over the life of the toon.
I also use A-merits and AE ticket rolls liberally. In this way, I not only continue to bankroll my characters (I have a LOT of characters all leveling at once) but I never have to buy things like Steadfast +def or KB IOs. I can get full expensive sets like Basilisk's Gaze doing that, too, as well as very useful mid-range sets like Thunderstrike and Red Fortune.
I use A-merits to get things like LOTG +rech, Numina, Miracle and Regen uniques, and triples/quads for high-end orange sets.
The only way your build should run you even half of your budget is if you need it all RIGHT NAO!! If you place reasonable bids and walk away, if you use tickets and Amerits, and if you don't feel the need to trick your character out in full sets immediately, there's no reason you can't slowly and steadily replace all your generics with full sets without breaking your bank.
400m is too little to seriously consider IO'ing a toon.
Take those 400m, invest them on the Market and turn them into 2 billion, and then you can make a nice build with typed defense bonuses, +health, +regeneration and +recharge (in that order) |
Well, my first question is always: Is there any aspect of performance where you're NOT satisfied? On my WP tank, I used set bonuses to get to the hit point cap (then they raised the cap) and get some extra end recovery.

Everyone has some VERY valid points on the issue of Frankenslotting and using sets to their full advantage.....
I am just inexperienced with both aspects
For the most part I have been 95% happy with how my tank does it's job for a long while now.
I am learning a lot this way
Took it out for another spin this morning on a tip mission (+1 x8 with bosses) vs HUGE mobs of Freakshow and it went well.
I just loOOoooOooove gettin hip-deep in their blood LOL
I have to admit..... I thought about that neat idea of making a 2nd build for it just with as many sets as I could afford and try a comparison so to speak.
Taking the "Pepsi Challenge" so to speak to see if I like my original build of just IOs vs my 2nd one with the sets and such

Here's an idea for a slow and fruitful start. Find two Acc/Dam set IO Melee recipes around L40-50 that are relatively cheap, and that you either have the salvage for, or that the salvage is relatively affordable.
Craft them (this will give you an idea of the crafting system, and the more you do it, the more you will understand the IO system in general, I think.)
Pick a power that has an Acc SO and a Dam SO, and replace them with your 2 newly crafted IOs. You should notice an immediate improvement in your orange numbers, for a low price. That should get the ball rolling for you. All the above advice is, of course, very good stuff and valuable. Start slow, and as you get the hang of it, read some of the forum guides on IOs. Patience is the key in stretching your IO 'dollar'. Also, you may run across a crazy Purple drop at some point - then you're options open up further.

I think you should up your difficulty to the point where you are barely and consistently winning your fights; fights so close that you are left panting with exertion, where 1 more mob would have turned victory into defeat. Then evaluate it. Is it worth your time/effort/money to pursue a better IO'd build, or am I happy with my current limits? If you want more, ask yourself how can I survive if I up it another notch? Am I going to be defeated because I ran out of endurance and my toggles dropped? Or is there just going to be too much damage coming in to survive? Or will I survive, but not be able to pump out enough damage? Or am I whiffing too much now? Or if that one power had recharged faster, could I survive longer?
Once you figure that out, load up Mids and look for those sets that will shore up your particular weaknesses. And I agree with the other posters, use your second build for this.
Above all, have fun!
Just wanted to point out, nothing says you have to Frankenslot or Slot for sets only. You can set slot one power entirely, Frenkenslot another, and have 2 different sets of 3 each in a 3rd power. That could get you fair amount of the nifty set global effects.
It is hard to see from his picture but I believe the OP has already hit the ED-capped roof on damage, so he will not see any improvement in his damage. He will have higher accuracy, but that won't really matter at what difficulty he has tested either (+1/x8).

I am gonna try some Rikti stuff tonight after work, the CoH, more Malta, some Carnie action and whatever else tickles my interest at that moment in time.
I notice some of the weaknesses that tank has (especially vs the 52s and 53s) is accuracy believe it or not.
Endurance is not even an issue for the most part either.
But I DID notice that the green bar would go down a little too fast for my tastes LOL
So yeah.... I am gonna hit a trainer at some near point in time and start a 2nd build with "sets" starting the slots out.... then fill each empty slot with a frankenslot so to speak of a combined enhancer.
Thanks to everyone's awesome observations I feel more at ease about tinkering with my fav old tank than I did a couple days ago.
I have a 50 Fire/Fire/Pyre Tank and a 50 SS/WP/Energy Mastery Tank also.
I love them both but my old "standby" has been my Thor tanker

Random thought here while at work
Say if there is a 6 slotted set of ANY certain type of IO set.....
if 3 of those enhancements were placed in one power....
and 3 in another power...... you wouldn't get the bonus for the WHOLE set or no?
Or would ya get the particular bonus for just slotting 3? LOL
Call it a newb question...... but I never gave that sorta thinking all that much time in the past.
It just hit me and I thought asking on this thread might be the best

Overall it will make a huge improvement but not for 400 mill.
