I forget the rules on this thing, so please forgive me...

On Tuesday Sept 7th, Sailor Rush (Derek R.) passed away suddenly. He is survived by his loving wife and children. Sailor served in the Navy for 20 years. During that time, he fought in Gulf Storm, the Persian Gulf War and Desert Storm.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Sailor/Derek's memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project

He was a wonderful person and we all in RO miss him terribly...Rest in peace, hero.

Always a shame to lose someone who risked their life to protect what we take for granted everyday. I may not know him personally, but thank his family for supporting him while he protected us all. Rest in peace.

My condolences to his family.

Rush was one of the few people with the decency to treat others with respect, regardless of popular opinion or the like. He always treated me like a fellow human being and often made sensible points oft overlooked through the inane chatter that is this forum.

Rest in peace. You earned it.

Now! This is it! Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain or live and fight your sorrow! Now is the time to shape your stories! Your fate is in your hands!

I'm sorry to hear that.

I salute Sailor Rush for all he did for this country and hope that his family finds condolance.

((Aw man. He seemed like a decent guy. One of the people who make wherever he hangs out just a little classier. My dealings with him on the boards were always pleasant and cordial. Rest in peace, friend.))

I thought this was gonna be an IC thread. I was unprepared, and the sadness and shock made me cry a little.

Whatever hate you have for the wars we fight, direct them at the government, not the soldiers. The government decides who we go to war with, the soldiers are the ones who lay their lives on the line doing it. As anti-war as I am, I have nothing but respect for the men and women of the military who devote their lives to protecting civilians and ensuring that we can live our lives in peace and safety.

Makes me sorry I didn't really know the guy...

I never had the privilege of knowing or speaking with Sailor Rush, but from the glowing tributes so far, that sounds like it is entirely to my detriment.
My condolences to his family and friends. A man or woman who is prepared to serve in the armed services is a man or woman with more courage than most, and that should always be honoured. Like Makai, I'm very much what used to be referred to as a "conscientious objector," but I acknowledge the sacrifices and hardships suffered by those who choose to serve their country, even if they're sometimes abused by the government they serve.
I hope his last moments were peaceful, and he left his family with grace and dignity.

I'm sorry to hear this. Sailor was always friendly and helpful to me during my time on Freedom.

Sad =(

I don't think there's anything I can say that hasn't already been said more eloquently by those posting above me. So I'll leave it at a simple salute from one still here to another now gone.

Oh, and I do believe Taps is in order, if you have it handy.

I didn't know him personally, but I saw him around now and again and as others have said he seemed a very decent man. Rest in peace, man, and condolences to the family and friends.
