Laser Tag now an Olympic Sport!

I don't even know what to say. If a country has laws so strict that required equipment cannot be used for an Olympic sport, that country should not qualify to host the Olympic games. Bad enough they had to neuter the fencing foils.

An no, lasers do not simulate a firearm. Response to recoil, taking gravity and wind into account, even the nature of the mechanical trigger and issues with proper maintenance and dealing with a misfire, are all important parts of the sport. Bicycles are dangerous too, maybe we should put them all on stationary bikes. That's a fair simulation, right?

Britain. Ugg.

Well, Chicago lost the Olympics to Rio de Janeiro because the commitee thought it'd be safer. Well, what's a little kidnapping nowadays?

When Laser Tags becomes a real, full-on Olympic sports, can they retroactively award Middle School me a couple of medals?

Okay, this is just freaking lame.

What next, replacing the javelins with Nerf darts? Maybe we have the martial arts athletes compete via the Street Fighter game.

That's pathetic. Can you use a laser sight for shooting your laser?
Heck even a red dot would be fine considering Light goes straight

And ever so slowly, the very nature and purpose of the Olympics dies, one step at a time...
I don't even care about the Olympics because of stuff like this, but that mentality is spreading through a lot of other physical competitions as well.
The fighters in UFC aren't even allowed to use a downward elbow strike because some jack*** judge or committee member or something like that saw a demonstration where some random guy broke a block of ice that way, and got it to pass as a rule... There's actually a massive number of odd things like that in UFC, and other sports as well.
People break concrete slabs in demonstrations with an ordinary punch, too. Maybe the fighters should just dry hump and tickle each other to see who wins >_<

And what happens when some idiot blasts someone in the eye with a laser gun and temporarily blinds them for a few seconds. That would just be so horrible...
Just another reason to be disappointed in humanity.

Isn't this basically what female wrestlers do?

I'd just like to point out that it wasn't us Brits that decided on this, it was the guys incharge of the Olympics that made the choice.

Infact the guns normally used for the type of target shooting using in the Olympics (like ski-shooting etc.) are bolt action rifles or sometimes even air rifles, both of which are perfectly legal to own in the UK (Bolt action rifles require a gun liscence of course).

So don't blame Brits for this!

This.

I might be willing to *consider* this if the lasers in question are capable of creating smoking holes through thier targets.

No, no, they need to race motorcycles in an arcade game.

Well to be fair, the last Olympics held in America was bombed...by an American.

That is simply pathetic. Lasers and firearms are nowhere near equivalent. You might as well just ignore all the previous awards since the competition will not even be vaguely comparable. You might as well allow the Olympic swimmers to wear swim fins.

Too many alts to list.

Seriously? You guys give a damn about the sanctity of the Modern Pentathlon?

It's basically "Posh teenage girl" activities dressed up as a sport.

I only care in the same way I'd care if the Tour de France replaced bicycles with motorcycles. It kinda removes the skill.

What? Have you ever actually WATCHED a motorcycle race???

Here's the Isle of Man TT, held annually in Britain annually and where fatalities regularly occur due to accidents. It's nuts and certainly requires skill.

It was the best example I could think of rapidly.

Your definition of "best" doesn't match mine. Examples are supposed to prove your point, not actively undermine it.

Qualifier: the last Summer Olympics. The '02 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City went fine, aside from a judging scandal and the lame-a** SLC Olympic committee getting caught with their bribery.

And, IMO, using laser guns takes much of the skill out of target shooting, since there's no need to correct for things influencing the bullet as it travels, such as wind, gravity, and the like. Unless they're going to make them shoot through prisms and bounce beams off mirrors to hit the targets, which would be rather interesting.

Goodbye, I guess.

Bah, arguing with you is a losing battle! That I must say I enjoy...

I'm too sleepy to come up with a good example but I'm pretty sure you understood what I meant in the first place.

Of course now I've managed to incur the wrath of all the posh girls who compete in the Modern Pentathlon (all 7 of them). I'll be hunted down on horseback like the dog I sm, chased over small walls until cornered.

Of course since they are now armed with laser pointers I should be safe. At least until they break out the fencing foils.

Note to self: rally the IOC to add Oik Pursuit to the list of events.

The laser guns used by the Pentathlon does have recoil and use a mechanical trigger, except for the barrel it's pretty much built the same as an air soft gun. Costs, both monetary and to the environment (trying to find pellets after misses due to gravity and wind and msifires), are probably one of the things the Olympic commitee is attempting to aliviate with this change.

Considering George Patton competed in the Modern Pentathlon, calling the competitors 'posh girls' seems a bit off base.
