Strange Behaviour After Upgrade to Windows 7
I recently upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7, and ever since the upgrade, I find that when I tab or click out of the game, the screen is frozen when I return. I then have to tab out one more time and tab back before the game returns to normal.
Also, since this upgrade HeroStats (which I know is a third party application and is not supported) no longer remains on top of the game, even when the Always Keep On Top setting is checked. |
So, there's nothing that can be done? What about running in compatability mode?

First: Yes. This is how Win7 works with OpenGL applications. E.G. getting stuff like GPUZ to run on-top of City of Heroes requires setting CoH to windowed mode.
Second: The Tab-out problem has been well-documented as a problem with Windows 7 handling full-screen OpenGL applications. It can be duplicated on other OpenGL applications such as any Unigine Demo running Full Screen OpenGL, UT 2k4 with the OpenGL renderer, and any ID Software game.
try running CoH in windowed mode, it made a world of differnce to me

I'm also running on a Win7 upgrade from XP, and I've never experienced the Tab Screen freezing issue, not even a flicker of hesitation. Without knowing anything about your system have you done the basics, drivers, virus scan, adequate memory etc.
And take any definitive statements offered by je_saist with a boulder sized grain of salt.
My desktop machine does the freezing thing when tabbing back too, whereas my laptop has never done so. Both run Win7, although my laptop is running Ultimate while the desktop is on Home Premium.
Personally, I think it's a driver issue, since the desktop machine periodically disables Aero when CoH is running, stating incompatibilities with it. On my Laptop, Aero runs perfectly fine with CoH.
It's not really been important enough to me to diagnose the true cause, I've just gotten used to tabbing back into the game twice on the desktop.
I have this issue sometimes with Win7. Sometimes I don't. Whenever I DO have the issue, I usually just close up the game and start the game back up, and it stops being an issue. Sometimes, just closing out another program running on the desktop will fix it, too--sometimes not. There isn't even consistency between which programs I shut down to make it work. Sometimes I tab out and when I tab back, I have this freeze. Then, if I play for a couple hours, I can tab out and back in without a freeze, without altering anything at all in the background.
I decided long ago that anything Windows-related isn't meant to make sense. One just sorta works around it. Of all the things I do when this happens, exiting and restarting the game tends to have the greatest consistency in 'fixing' this.

Deactivating Aero will remove that "strange behaviour".
The best way to do it is to check the "Deactivate Desktop Composition" option in the cityofheroes.exe properties (Compatibility tab).
You will lose your Aero design while you play CoX, but you won't have that "strange behaviour" anymore.

It works perfectly fine in windowed mode, whether Aero is enabled or not. However, that kind of defeats the purpose, since the reason I wanted to run it fullscreen in the first place was to dedicate the full graphics capabilities of the machine to rendering Ultra mode. There is a definite FPS loss (not to mention screen real estate loss) when running windowed, and a bigger one when compositing is involved.
Has a fix for this ever been found. I find it really annoying that I have to play in windowed mode!

Edit: I do have a problem now where alt tabbing won't access another window, the game one stays over the top. Far more annoying!

Can't come up with a name? Click the link!
Perhaps it depends on system components or type of win 7 installed, but I can tab out of CoH, indeed as I write this, I can see subtle movements my character is making idly through the glass start bar. Also alt tabbing will show a miniture version of the City of screen and it too, is animated, looks pretty cool actually

Is this install 100% up to date? double check!
