  1. Neither Beam Rifle nor Time Manipulation are available in AE, even if you purchase Beam Rifle. It isn't unusual for them to hold back on a set to add it to AE for awhile after launch.
  2. Arc writers in my RP coalition have been doing this sort of thing pretty much since the AE launched. We routinely place each others' characters in our arcs and swap enemy critter files. We've had a few cases where one person writes an arc that's based in some way on another person's arc, too.

For example, when a member of my coalition wrote an arc that detailed our heroes stopping a bunch of zombies caused by science gone horribly awry, we ran it and enjoyed it. The final mission was locking down an outbreak in King's Row before it could spread.

While playing, I thought of all the terrible things my villain character could do if she got her hands on a way to make an army of super-zombies. So, I wrote an arc for our villain characters trying to gather information and materials, then test them to make sure the zombies worked right. I got the critter files for the zombies, set an early mission in King's Row with the assumption that the villains would be collecting data in the aftermath of the heroes stopping the outbreak, and even had the villains kidnapping the scientist that was the contact for the first arc. We ended up with two arcs that were distinct and could be played individually, but added up to something more when considered together.

These sorts of things work tremendously well to build cohesion and verisimilitude among a group of people. Any good tabletop GM has been doing it for years. The devs do it--and when they don't, we call them on it. I just sort of assumed more arc writers already did things like this among people sharing their universe.

Note that the last mission can get slightly finicky if you are using a damage aura or a debuff aura like Rise to the Challenge. I suggest turning those off when you reach that point of the mission. You'll know what I mean when you get there. At present, there isn't really another work-around.
  5. I generally can't be bothered to try anymore. There's not much point.

I've written dozens of arcs since AE's inception. At any given time, I have between three and eight arcs published. They rotate through fairly regularly as I write stuff that I consider to be better than the old stuff. This year alone, I cranked out something like sixteen or seventeen mission arcs, including a ten-arc, 40-odd mission storyline for my weekly coalition group.

Earlier this year, I decided to stop writing for a general audience and just focus on writing for that coalition. There's a very simple reason why.

In the past year, I've had exactly five plays on all of my arcs combined that did not come from my coalition. One of them was on Between Love And Loyalty (still published) asking if it could be put on the Excellent Arcs thread. One of them was on Vault of the Descended (since unpublished) and loved it. Three were from a team who'd run one of the version of The Price of Freedom, the feedback from which I was able to greatly improve the arc's ending for Aeon's Third Challenge. Goodness knows why I bothered.

As a writer, it's obvious to me that my ideas of Fun and Challenge aren't at all in line with what other peoples' are. I write missions for teams to play--people want to solo Architect missions. I write missions with a specific tone with mild humour sprinkled in--people either want epic dramas that explore the human condition or lolbat. I write an arc that's as long as it needs to be to tell the story--people want something they can churn through in under fifteen minutes. I like the idea of tactical encounters that require a plan other than Tank And Spank--people want to tap some buttons while chatting about the latest Thing.

I've written everything from simple lowbie arcs that can be played on Autopilot to intentionally difficult end-game-like encounters that can easily cause teamwipes if the group can't figure out how to overcome the obstacle. To my credit, I have yet to publish a single arc that cannot be beaten, though I've had a few coalition members stare aghast at a couple of challenges I've thrown at them until they figure out a way to deal with it. Those are the rewarding moments, to me.

All that shows up when I'm a player. I got bored very easily with the vast majority of arcs I have run in the past. They're either no different from any other newspaper mission I could be running or the author can't figure out the difference between "tactical challenge" and "arduous." (Hint: Aim, Build Up, Tar Patch, and nukes are not powers that should go on every single Lt or Minion-entity on the map without careful consideration) Nevertheless, I have finished almost every arc I've ever started--sometimes after much slogging and against my better judgement. The only times I don't finish an arc are if it's an obvious farm (not my thing) or I'm crunched for time and have plans for that character later. I leave feedback on every arc I run. Sometimes that feedback has suggestions for improvements and other times it's just a nod to the author that someone played his/her arc. I'd estimate that a third of the time, I get a message back within a week along the lines of "Wow, I didn't know that was still published."

It's fairly telling how clogged the AE is if the authors themselves don't even remember that they have something out there for others to run. Meanwhile, the authors who update their arcs regularly in response to feedback twiddle their thumbs waiting for someone to run into them with the Random button.

I try to run a handful of arcs a month just to support the system. Sometimes I only get in one or two arcs and other times I'll splurge and run nothing but AE missions for most of a weekend. I like some of the Dev's Choice and HoF and dislike others. I try to run a few from lists people have compiled or CoHMissionReview. I don't usually write reviews because I find it more interesting to talk to the author directly than to leave an essay--like I'm doing now, I suppose.

    Short version, then (too late).

Right now, I want Incarnate stuff. Even when that's done, I doubt I'll do more than my usual approaches to AE here and there. I haven't published anything in a couple months and am having difficulty psyching myself up to write a New Year's arc for my coalition.

There's just no point to it anymore, which is a damn shame because it's potentially one of the coolest things about this game. Sadly, the implementation simply falls short.

Someone get the PvP, AE, and base editing playerbases together and tell them to stop putting each other down and start realizing how much they have in common.
  6. Second Holding Down the Fort

I've run most of these. I really must go run through the rest soonish.
  7. I have this issue sometimes with Win7. Sometimes I don't. Whenever I DO have the issue, I usually just close up the game and start the game back up, and it stops being an issue. Sometimes, just closing out another program running on the desktop will fix it, too--sometimes not. There isn't even consistency between which programs I shut down to make it work. Sometimes I tab out and when I tab back, I have this freeze. Then, if I play for a couple hours, I can tab out and back in without a freeze, without altering anything at all in the background.

I decided long ago that anything Windows-related isn't meant to make sense. One just sorta works around it. Of all the things I do when this happens, exiting and restarting the game tends to have the greatest consistency in 'fixing' this.
  8. I dropped a PM to Avatea and War Witch about this. I tried sending one to Black Pebble, being the only Marketing Guy the forums have seen that I can recall, but he seems to have his PMs turned off.

Guess we'll see if anything comes of it. I agree that even a "This is weird, we'll check it out" note would be nice. Obviously, the development team and community reps aren't responsible for shipping and distribution, so nobody holds them accountable for this messup.
  9. I just stopped by my local EB this morning and was told that I should check back on Tuesday. The fella gave me the usual runabout about how I should check with the developer's website and assumes everything just got stuck in customs. I'm not sure I particularly buy that, but I'm allowing myself to remain deluded enough to maintain hope.

I've already put all my money down like a lot of other people. I guess now the option is either to be patient and wait for things to come in, or just buy the downloadable version to hop right into things and end up paying twice.

    So... Stalkers.

Stalker survivability is fine as it is. I've at times thought that the hit point increase the AT received with the rest of their buffs a couple years ago wasn't really needed, but I also tend towards defense sets for stalkers instead of resistance and regen sets that get more out of the hit point boost, so I'm biased. Increasing the hit point cap isn't really ideal because the goal is to keep the AT unique, not turn it into a sneaky Scrapper.

I'm all for at least experimenting with increasing the Build Up bonus to 100%. That adds a healthy dose of upfront damage on its own. Making the crit bonus damage unresistable adds too many headaches to think about. Increasing the crit bonus multiplier by a full integer would almost certainly be overkill, but toying with some small increase might be worth consideration. We might run the numbers on something like maintaining the current crit rate and increasing the crit multiplier to 2.5 or 2.25 and work our way from there based on whatever sort of overall damage increase we're aiming at.

I can't support the idea of having a scaling crit based on number of enemies in range. I understand the idea thematically, but consider it a mechanical challenge that might not really provide as much benefit as the effort that would need to be expended. The crit rate based on team size provides for a definite limit on what the maximum crit rate can possibly be under ideal circumstances and a definite increase in damage based on the size of the team. Setting the crit rate based on number of enemies in an area requires enforcing a cap on how much benefit can be gained, either by setting a limited area the enemies have to be within to achieve the benefit or a hard cap beyond which the bonus can't go--likely both, providing for a maximum number of critters that provide a crit rate bonus within a defined area. So far, that's similar to how team crits work, but then come the complications.

Since the number of critters is (generally) more than a team can bring to the fight, each individual critter would end up needing to (likely) supply a smaller bonus to the crit rate than the AT currently gets from each individual teammate. Not every team is going to be herding masses of critters into a tight area, while most teams tend to stay at least relatively close together. (Whether or not they stay within 30 feet of each other is debatable, but I'm about to get to that.) For that reason, a swap like this would work better for one team playstyle than another with only a little benefit to a soloist. That benefit ends up cut short by the fact that in those herding teams, those herds get decimated by a team's AoEs, anyway. Also, while it's debatable whether or not most teams stay within 30 feet of each other, it's generally true that a team stays fairly tightly packed against tough encounters like AVs and Monsters. By swapping from a teammate-based to an enemy-based scaling crit rate, the Stalker ends up losing out on bonus damage against single hard enemies, when it is the most useful, in exchange for a bonus against multiple weaker enemies--something that the AT isn't really designed around dealing with, anyway, if the comparative lack of AoEs is an indication. (Almost every Stalker set has an AoE or two, but a number of those are balanced around being single target attacks, anyway.)

THAT means a system that would end up working like, say, Invincibility, with a front-load of bonus for smaller enemy encounters that diminishes for larger enemy encounters. Maybe that could be made to work, but I just think that's a lot of effort for trivial--if any--return when the current system already works very well.

Regarding the current Terror and -ToHit benefit of Assassination as it stands, the only real problems I have are that the Demoralize doesn't kick in if the enemy drops. It's a strange catch that provides for strategic choices (which are good, don't get me wrong), but is really hard to understand thematically. When "Joe is dead, man! He just DIED, right there, right in front of me, in no time flat!" doesn't evoke as much fear as "Man, something just poked Joe in the foot!", headscratching is bound to occur.

    Kinda odd?

The elevators in the hero and villain side hallways are not flagged as hero or villain only. Anyone in either hallway can go IN to the D. The elevators are only flagged on the inside of the club, preventing just anybody from going OUT of the D except towards their correct faction side. The zone doors in the hallways, however, are all flagged appropriately. Try as I might, I can't get a Stalker into King's Row. And oh how I've tried.
  12. Cybernetic_Hobo

    Kinda odd?

Additionally, the person isn't stuck. He/she can go back into the D, and from there, back to his/her own faction map (Paragon or the Isles) anytime. The doors in the hallways themselves are marked Hero and Villain only, so you can't use them to cross into the other faction map and do any mean, nasty forced PvP or anything. It's just a fun place to stand some days when you're bored.

This has been possible for ... a couple years, at least. I don't remember when I started doing it, but I used to hang out there all the time. It's not a real big deal, though I do enjoy the occasional second glance. From time to time, it leads to fun RP. I just don't like standing in the middle of the dance floor or up in the bar to get my RP in. This is less frequent, but usually more stimulating.

Besides, with Going Rogue coming up soon, I figured it'd soon be old hat to see Stalkers in the blueside hallway. May as well get my fun in now.

    New Laptop Blues

Let's pretend that buying a new video card for the laptop is not currently an option and likely won't be for several weeks, if not a couple months. What's my next best bet? Any tweaks I can pull to get the game working? I'm used to crashing on zoning or switching servers with the old machine, but crashing from the arduous task of standing still in the Shadow Shard seems a bit excessive.

The video card is whatever came with the laptop. I haven't made any changes to the hardware since buying the thing a week or so ago. All it says is Mobile Intel 4 series, which tells me nothing, but hopefully it tells more intelligent people something.

    New Laptop Blues

I have a very old desktop. Quite old. Playing CoH on it is sort of a headache, what with dc'ing every couple of hours. I've grown used to that because the desktop is old and I'm really putting more stress on it than it should have to take. However, this isn't about my desktop.

Quite recently, my wife and I purchased a new laptop to have a second computer in the house. At a glance, the laptop looked to be a significantly superior machine to the desktop, so I looked forward to playing CoH on it. Unfortunately, there've been some problems. Possibly these are just due to New Issue Day, but I come here just in case.

Here's what's happening: The updater runs fine and I load into the game with no problems. There are some minor bits of choppiness while running through Mercy, but I would expect that on New Issue Day and I'll play with graphics settings later to figure out what works well. The real issue is that after fifteen or twenty minutes, the game crashes to windows. There's no accompanying error message--just the game locking up, then getting that familiar program not responding message.

The laptop comes equipped with Vista, and I've downloaded up to the latest service pack for it. The machine has four gigs of ram and the included graphics chip has .... -checks- 1.75 gigs of video memory. It runs a dual core 2 ghz processor. An internet search, as well as checking the Gateway home site (it's a silly Gateway laptop, naturally) has told me that I have the latest drivers for those. Since it is a new computer, I ran a memory test and that came up with no errors.

At the time we purchased the laptop, we also purchased an elevated platform with an additional fan for heating issues. That is plugged in correctly and spins up only when the computer needs the extra cooling. When I crash, the fan isn't spinning up, so either it's malfunctioning or this particular problem isn't heat-related. I'm used to heat being my primary cause of problems (I lived in Florida for a number of years), so that was the first thing I checked. If there is an additional test I can run to see if the system is overheating, I'd be pleased to hear it.

I can load into the game on the laptop for a few minutes at a time--long enough to make any graphics changes that may help, so I'm all ears on those.

I can continue playing CoH just fine (relatively) on my old, crappy desktop, but my hope is to get it working on this machine--if only so I can TF without having to worry about my wife's own gaming schedule. Gurus of the Tech Boards, there are heroes to stab and crimes to commit! Help me make it happen.
  16. I have un-published my older arcs (which weren't getting play, anyway) to present the first two of a three part story series. These arcs are designed to be played either alone or as part of the overall story arc. Part three will be finished Soonish once some bugs are worked out.
