New Laptop Blues

Posted

I have a very old desktop. Quite old. Playing CoH on it is sort of a headache, what with dc'ing every couple of hours. I've grown used to that because the desktop is old and I'm really putting more stress on it than it should have to take. However, this isn't about my desktop.

Quite recently, my wife and I purchased a new laptop to have a second computer in the house. At a glance, the laptop looked to be a significantly superior machine to the desktop, so I looked forward to playing CoH on it. Unfortunately, there've been some problems. Possibly these are just due to New Issue Day, but I come here just in case.

Here's what's happening: The updater runs fine and I load into the game with no problems. There are some minor bits of choppiness while running through Mercy, but I would expect that on New Issue Day and I'll play with graphics settings later to figure out what works well. The real issue is that after fifteen or twenty minutes, the game crashes to windows. There's no accompanying error message--just the game locking up, then getting that familiar program not responding message.

The laptop comes equipped with Vista, and I've downloaded up to the latest service pack for it. The machine has four gigs of ram and the included graphics chip has .... -checks- 1.75 gigs of video memory. It runs a dual core 2 ghz processor. An internet search, as well as checking the Gateway home site (it's a silly Gateway laptop, naturally) has told me that I have the latest drivers for those. Since it is a new computer, I ran a memory test and that came up with no errors.

At the time we purchased the laptop, we also purchased an elevated platform with an additional fan for heating issues. That is plugged in correctly and spins up only when the computer needs the extra cooling. When I crash, the fan isn't spinning up, so either it's malfunctioning or this particular problem isn't heat-related. I'm used to heat being my primary cause of problems (I lived in Florida for a number of years), so that was the first thing I checked. If there is an additional test I can run to see if the system is overheating, I'd be pleased to hear it.

I can load into the game on the laptop for a few minutes at a time--long enough to make any graphics changes that may help, so I'm all ears on those.

I can continue playing CoH just fine (relatively) on my old, crappy desktop, but my hope is to get it working on this machine--if only so I can TF without having to worry about my wife's own gaming schedule. Gurus of the Tech Boards, there are heroes to stab and crimes to commit! Help me make it happen.

The video card is whatever came with the laptop. I haven't made any changes to the hardware since buying the thing a week or so ago. All it says is Mobile Intel 4 series, which tells me nothing, but hopefully it tells more intelligent people something.

I think the video's likely the issue:

Card name: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
Manufacturer: Intel Corporation
Chip type: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
DAC type: Internal
Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2A42&SUBSYS_021C1025&REV_09
Display Memory: 1759 MB
Dedicated Memory: 64 MB
Shared Memory: 1695 MB
Current Mode: 1366 x 768 (32 bit) (60Hz)

With onboard video, you'll use system memory for video memory, unlike a dedicated card with it's own built in on-card memory.

Let's pretend that buying a new video card for the laptop is not currently an option and likely won't be for several weeks, if not a couple months. What's my next best bet? Any tweaks I can pull to get the game working? I'm used to crashing on zoning or switching servers with the old machine, but crashing from the arduous task of standing still in the Shadow Shard seems a bit excessive.

Well, adding a video card to a laptop is not an easy or cheap process - I believe most or all are built onto the motherboard before assembly, as there aren't the expansion slots as in a desktop.

You might try cranking all the settings down, and turning off various effects. If it runs okay, then start boosting stuff a bit until it starts flaking out on you, then back off a bit.

You also might set your game resolution lower - 1024x768 or something - and see what that does. It should make for less video load and may help, too. I know on my older laptop, I have a vid card with lower memory, and I have to run at 1024x768.

Some of the other folks here may have more and better suggestions...I don't keep up with this stuff like I used to, but I do play on a laptop, so the above might work for you.

Also, you are NOT up to date on Vista Service Packs. Service Pack 2 was released around the end of May of 2009. Sometimes it won't show up due to other updates needing to be installed, or occasionally because someone accidentally hid the update.

You can get the download directly from Microsoft here for 32-bit versions of Vista, or here for 64-bit versions.

Also, DXDiag doesn't give the best info for us here. It would be better to post the results of running CoH Helper. This will also show us the ingame settings for video as well as the most relevant information that DXDiag gives us, but formatted better to make it easier to find what is needed.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

hey there everyone. ok so i am about a 3 year veteran on and off of city of heroes and i am not very smart computer wise. i am going to get back into CoH since i am getting ready to head to college. problem is is i do not have a good laptop to use for it, all of mine seem to crash the game at many times. could you guys please tell me some of the best laptops that will run CoH with little to no problems at all. i would greatly appreciate it . or email me at codylambky@hotmail.com. i look forward to responses if people still read these forums. remember that i need little to no problems running and i just want to know price ranges so i can brainstorm.

I did some research recently when I was buying a laptop for my son, and found that for a laptop that will run CoH reasonably well, you should expect to pay $700-$800 at a minimum. On the other end, the sky's the limit--there are custom builders who will make a premium laptop for you that costs thousands.

As I posted in the Player Questions thread, most laptops you'd buy nowdays would have enough memory and processor speed to run CoH well. The thing to watch for is the graphics card; as you can tell from this thread, many new laptops come with a graphics card, or worse, a onboard "graphics solution" that is just not adequate for a 3D game like CoH.

The standard "rule of thumb" is that you should look for a laptop with 1) a dedicated graphics card, and 2) a card that has a 6 or higher as the second digit in model number.

Keep in mind that unlike a desktop comp where you can add or replace most components, with a laptop you're pretty much stuck with the graphics it comes with; so it makes sense to buy the best you can afford.

Why don't you post links to some of the laptops you're interested in, and and I'm sure someone here can give you an opinion on them.

The 6 or higher rule isn't as pertinent anymore after a couple of rounds of nVidia rename game.

Over at NotebookCheck they classify mobile GPU performance. I wouldn't go with anything less than what they bin as Class 1 or 2.

Indeed. You might be able to play CoH on the lowest graphic settings, but anything else would be pushing it, especially since it's probably sharing memory with the rest of the computer, and that Intel chips are normally used for only basic computing (and maybe the Aero interface if you're lucky).

Lamentably, caveat emptor.

Thanks, that's helpful to know, Father X!

Go to Intel chipset site and make sure you have the latest drivers. Make sure you have the latest drivers for all the hardware on that computer: motherboard/CPU, sound, etc...

Also, you have a trojan infection:
