Painful Decision

I need advice. My preferred way to make inf is to PLAY. I enjoy TFs and hami raids, etc. and using the merits to get what I need for my toons. Due to a variety of RL issues my hours are highly variable. My present home server just does not have enough action, particulary at off hours, since the last round of free transfers.

I will never leave my home but I feel I have to move one of my fully slotted all around Lvl 50 toons to a server that is really active for TFs, hami raids, etc. and has action all day or as close as possilbe. A play for merits oriented SG recommendation for such a server and/or channels to join there would be great too.
Thanks,
Jak

Freedom and Virtue are the two most populated servers, so they would be the places to look. From what you said, you would seem to be a better fit for Freedom, but of course your milage may vary.

However, keep in mind that there is going to be a lull in players right now, since it's in between issues, and with GR on the horizon, a lot of people are on test trying it out before it goes live.

Hey there, here on Virtue we run all kinds of fancy crap at all hours with all types. It's usual to have multiple strike/task forces recruiting at once, we have scheduled blue and redside Hami raids, we melt that mothership with aplomb and panache. Come on over and enjoy our friendly teaming environment! Here's some globals to join to maximize your experience!
  • Virtue LFG Alpha -- for teaming on most any sort
  • VirtueTFs 2010 -- for any sort of strike or task force, also trials
  • Virtuebadges09 -- for anything related to badges
  • VirtueUnited -- for shenanigans and teaming and chat (PM a mod to be unsilenced!)
Come join Virtue, get in those channels, and make some friends here. You might even find that you want to emigrate

I'd also suggest joining other server's global chat/tf channels (do a channel search for TF, task, etc) so you can lurk and see how popular they are at the times you play.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

Thank you Emberly, for your excellent and responsive post. I will certainly consider Virtue, but in preparing for this post I scanned the Server Forums. Is the stability issue on Virtue stickied by red name Avatea on August 5 resolved yet? I just checked and saw no red name update in that thread.

To all others who have responded thank you as well.

Naturally, I am already a member of the TF etc. channels on my home server which is why I asked about them in the OP. During regular hours there is moderate activity, and there are scheduled Hami raids but usually only 1 a week. The RL problems I mentioned mean I have missed every one of the raids for the last 6 weeks. Before the transfers I was averaging two out of the three raids every week and an ITF every day along with plenty of other TFs.

The overall lack of action I mentioned has been evident for some months, ever since the anniversary free transfers. I do not attribute it to players spending time in beta tests and such as this is a multi-month observance. I have tolerated the lapse of merit opportunities because I can barely afford to keep my and my spouse's account going, and could not justify even the modest fee for a transfer, particulary as I had to scrape up the cumshaw for 2 x GR.

The announcement of the upcoming free transfers is the circumstance that has prompted this thread. It is unthinkable that I would emigrate as several RL friends got us into the game and naturally we are all on the same server. I hate to pull one of the only two really good all-around toons I have out of our guild, but I can't make any more without some form of income and I just really dislike marketing.

How anti-marketing are you? Usually people use marketeering to mean "buy [possibly craft] and resell" but some people are so anti-marketing they don't want to roll random, craft, and sell.

Merits ARE available through Ouro. You can start new characters on Freedom and Virtue and see which one sticks. (When I make up a new character and get them to 33 through TFs and roll all my randoms, I make about 300-500 million. That may change utterly with Going Rogue, though.)

Mini-guides: Force Field Defenders, Blasters, Market Self-Defense, Frankenslotting.

So you think you're a hero, huh.

Thanks Fulmens,
I have read your guide on the market, Fury Flechette's, and at least 3 others. I read the market and invention forum everyday now. I have tried crafting and selling but it just seems to take a long time to get everything done. Too much time as far as I am concerned.

In the 9 months I have been playing I have tried every form of recommended random roll (silver this, bronze that, gold whatever) and I guess I am just under the curse of the RNG fairy as it has been a dissapointment every time but once. I am talking 9999 AE tickets at least 3 (30,000 plus tickets) times and every attempt at random would have been exceeded by just buying and merching the flavor of the moment rare salvage. My random rolls with merits are too painful to describe. At least when you spend 200 merits on a perfect LotG 7.5% you by god have a perfect LotG 7.5%, or Numina's or Miracle and it will sell for a decent amount. I have dropped a large number of good recipies playing, got the inf for the defeat and still had merits and tickets untouched. So my experience is play as much as you can and spend the absolute minimum time possible in Wentworths or at a crafting station.

This is one of the things I notice talked about time and again across the forums. There are so many valid ways to play the game and enjoy it.
Way to go CoH.

Back when AE used to be "the way to go" I used get great rolls with my tickets. It seemed like every other roll I was getting a Lotg, a Numina, a Miracle or something incredibly good. Now however, my luck is gone, so I feel your pain. Here's hoping to get it back one day.

On to the OP though, my home server used to be protector, but I then emigrated to Freedom, then to Justice, and now I'm on Virtue, and have been for the past year or so. I really like it, and as Emberly mentioned, those 4 channels are what you'll want to join when/if you arrive. Hope to see ya there.

I'd say that Virtue has hiccups far less often than it did at the time that thread was made. It's certainly stable enough that I don't notice much, if any problem.

It takes me minutes per play session, so once you get familiar with the process and interface, the market is a great and sustainable source of income. With that said, you have to do what you find fun. Running TFs, gaining merits is also very viable, although slower. However, you can't put a price on fun.

I just wouldn't give up on the marketing thing just yet. Everybody struggles a little bit at first, but then it goes very quickly once you get the hang of it. For fast turnover, start with something low risk like crafting common IOs, and as you start getting more adventuresome, go pick some viable yellow recipes (Crushing Impact, Doctored Wounds, Thunderstrikes). Even as often as those niches are published, they still make money.

Eventually, you'll get the hang of what sells, and what sits in your slots for weeks and you'll be able to narrow your investment. If you spend a lot of time offline or playing alts, you're at a decisive advantage over a lot players since you can simply wait it out for good prices (e.g., put in an absurd lowball bid, wait a week or more, and have it fill).

It's why I tell people to give the market is more casual friendly than most people realize. The casual gamer has the most decisive advantage in the Market because they are by circumstance the most patient.

Justice has a channel called Justice United. They run multiple TF's per day. They do a couple Hami's per week, also. A few of us farm. You're welcome to join and check it all out next week during the free transfers.

The only thing I'd add to this is to make one of your high level, less played characters into a marketing character. Email some start-up money and simply use that character for your marketing needs. Spend 10-15 minutes a day putting up some bids/crafting/selling, etc and log off for the day(with that character). The next day(or two, or three) repeat the process. This allows you to put some lowball bids on recipes and salvage, and extra time for crafted enhancements to sell.

Edit: If you usually play offpeak hours, Justice is also a viable choice. There are quite a few Oceanics(if that's the proper term) who play on Justice. I have characters on Freedom, Virtue, and Justice personally. All of them have viable late night populations.

If you really don't want to flip or craft or whatever, that's a perfectly valid way to play. I just figured I'd tailor my advice to your comfort level.

You probably HAVE all my marketing advice, already, though. It's not that deep. And Going Rogue is going to create a lot of chaos so my specific advice (there's embarassing amounts of money crafting purples, don't check anything except the top level of a given recipe, etc.) may become irrelevant.

I repeat my advice: check some short Ouro arcs out, maybe with a friend or two- I remember the Tsoo Shenanigans being really good for one of my characters, but I don't remember which character or what made it so good for them. Hand of Iron's pretty quick. Whatever works for you.

No need to feel bad Jak, we totally understand. Our ability to hook up at the same time has been notably bad lately. I can't remember the last time you made a SG night. I hope your 50(s) find a good home that you enjoy. You and your wife will still have your low levels with us I assume so there is hope that we'll still get to play together.

BTW - a lot of Justice folks were in the closed beta which started back in the spring. Same thing happened in the months prior to i17. I expect it to pick back up next week but I don't think we'll ever compete with Virtue or Freedom for sheer number of events.

Hey Golden_Avariel,

Thanks for the understanding and commiseration.

I am only going to move 1 toon, probably Lizzz, since you all hate to run with her anyway. She is going to be the the best all around, and strongest solo, which is not a group issue either. I doubt you will even know she left.

If the SG ever does want semi-uber help that will still leave Zev who is a lot more fragile and not such an over-achiever.

I was trying to be non-explicit about our home server as I did not want to dis Justice, I really really really like the community there, but the drop off from last fall when I started is just huge. If it turns out that all the missing peeps were in the beta all the time of course I'll stay, but that seems unlikely. Justice used to be one of the three servers with two lights lit but never anymore, not even on I17 release.

Hope my health and schedule improve, Jak
