Karl Urban to play Judge Dredd

Article here.

I'd read a few days ago that he was rumored in the role, and apparently he's confirmed it.

The Wellington-born actor told TV3 movie show Reel Late with Kate that he had officially been given the role, saying: "Yes, it's true, I am the Law"
While not a big fan of the character (no feelings either way), Urban is one of my favourite new actors. Hopefully it turns out well.

They ALL float down here. When you're down here with us, you'll float too!

Bring in Judge Death as the villain instead of a lame Rico.

First tick, no Americans writing the screenplay or directing. No offence to the Americans, but JD is very much a British creation.

Second tick, getting an extremely talented character actor like Urban (who won't mind disappearing under the helmet for the entire shoot, given his ability to disappear into parts).

Third tick will be a good studio backing it up.

Didn't mind Rico as the villain, but oh yes indeed give us JUDGE DEATH.

Also for fraks sake, can the writers and the star of the movie please remember that Judge Dredd is never seen without his helmet on? To this day his appearance has never been officially revealed and what little is known is suspect last time I read.

I remember reading that Ahnold turned the role down due to not wanting to wear the helmet all the time, yet somehow they got Stallone into the movie and agreed to not have the helmet on all the time....ugh.

We will see Judge Dredd's face because Hollywood believes we should. I agree with you but we will him without his helmet on.

It is like the superhero revealing his Identity to his girlfriend or she figures it out even though they never do in the comics.

Hell, I'm an American and I agree with this sentiment. It'd be like an American Remake of Monty Python, sometimes you just dont [censored] with the classics like that.

From what I have read they actually do intend to have Dredd keep the helmet on the entire movie.

Terry Gilliam is an American... and he is a member of Monty Python.

Is it Hollywood that believes we need to see Dredd's face.....or the ego of the actor?

I dunno, perhaps him having a cameo might elicit a few laughs as people recall the debacle that was the last Dredd movie...

It's almost always the actor that causes this issue. Didn't seem like they had too much of an issue keeping V's mask on in V For Vendetta. Unless I'm forgetting a moment where he removed the mask (fire scene excluded since it was all blurry and whatnot).

not a bad replacement

Urban understands exactly why it's important for Dredd to remain helmeted:

Quote:
If anyone is familiar with Dredd, over the years there are many times when Dredd removes his helmet but you never fully see his face and that was construct by the creator, Mr. Wagner. He represents that faceless system of justice and law. I will say this, hypothetically if I went to a movie that was called “Judge Dredd” and the character or the actor who played Judge Dredd took the helmet and I would see his full face and features I would puke in my popcorn because that’s not Dredd. He’s mysterious and enigmatic. We’re going to do it right.
As for the script, it's being described as "Die Hard taking place within the world of Blade Runner", but it doesn't sound like it's taking any direct plot elements from the comics.

I liked the Stallone's Dread. Although in my defense, i'd never dealt much with the source material.

Gilliam took dual British citizenship in 1968, before Python formed, and formally renounced his American citizenship in 2006. One wonders if Brazil had much influence on 2000 AD in the late 80s...

I always loved the riff the Tim Skinner: Total Scumbag comic did on JD.

The titular character gets sucked into the comic book world and runs across a thinly veiled JD. He naturally rips off the guy's helmet.

And there's nothing there...

Note: The link goes to a free download of the comic in PDF format from the publisher's site.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

This statement scared me until I realized it would continue to be a British creation. For some reason my first thought was Eastern European production when you said no Americans writing.

One of the ironies of Judge Dredd is, of course, that's it's a British take of what is ostensibly an "American" character, as Mega City One is the East Coast of what used to be the United States.
