I'd read a few days ago that he was rumored in the role, and apparently he's confirmed it. While not a big fan of the character (no feelings either way), Urban is one of my favourite new actors. Hopefully it turns out well. |
First tick, no Americans writing the screenplay or directing. No offence to the Americans, but JD is very much a British creation.
Second tick, getting an extremely talented character actor like Urban (who won't mind disappearing under the helmet for the entire shoot, given his ability to disappear into parts).
Third tick will be a good studio backing it up.

Didn't mind Rico as the villain, but oh yes indeed give us JUDGE DEATH.
Also for fraks sake, can the writers and the star of the movie please remember that Judge Dredd is never seen without his helmet on? To this day his appearance has never been officially revealed and what little is known is suspect last time I read.
I remember reading that Ahnold turned the role down due to not wanting to wear the helmet all the time, yet somehow they got Stallone into the movie and agreed to not have the helmet on all the time....ugh.

It is like the superhero revealing his Identity to his girlfriend or she figures it out even though they never do in the comics.
From what I have read they actually do intend to have Dredd keep the helmet on the entire movie.
Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
As long as Rob Schneider stays far, far, far, far.....far away from this movie.

@Lyrik
Well the first actor to play V couldn't handle wearing the mask all the time so they replaced him with Hugo Weaving.

not a bad replacement
Urban understands exactly why it's important for Dredd to remain helmeted:
If anyone is familiar with Dredd, over the years there are many times when Dredd removes his helmet but you never fully see his face and that was construct by the creator, Mr. Wagner. He represents that faceless system of justice and law. I will say this, hypothetically if I went to a movie that was called Judge Dredd and the character or the actor who played Judge Dredd took the helmet and I would see his full face and features I would puke in my popcorn because thats not Dredd. Hes mysterious and enigmatic. Were going to do it right. |
I liked the Stallone's Dread. Although in my defense, i'd never dealt much with the source material.
Urban understands exactly why it's important for Dredd to remain helmeted:
As for the script, it's being described as "Die Hard taking place within the world of Blade Runner", but it doesn't sound like it's taking any direct plot elements from the comics. |
I always loved the riff the Tim Skinner: Total Scumbag comic did on JD.
The titular character gets sucked into the comic book world and runs across a thinly veiled JD. He naturally rips off the guy's helmet.
And there's nothing there...

This statement scared me until I realized it would continue to be a British creation. For some reason my first thought was Eastern European production when you said no Americans writing.

I see myself as witty, urbane, highly talented, hugely successful with a keen sense of style. Plus of course my own special brand of modesty.
