Make Ice Patch a Ranged Location AoE Power
not a bad idea, but if you can't get it down with a tank or scrapper holding agro, then either you aren't waiting for them to gain all the agro or they suck.
as it is now, it follows all of the blaster secondaries. sometimes you have to get into melee range to use a power.
for now, unless you can overwhelmingly convince me, /unsigned.
I got to thinking about this one for awhile now for my level 48 Ice/Ice Blaster. As you guys know, Blasters are very squishy and the majority of their powers are ranged attacks for obvious reasons being any close melee would almost guarantee a certain quick death and a trip to your friendly neighborhood Hospital.

Go load up almost any blaster. Look at the secondary set.
Blasters, while not a "melee AT," are not helpless in melee (barring a choice to skip these powers by the player.) Some of the hardest hitting powers are melee powers. And you *do* have other powers to assist your survivability in /ice - chilling embrace, for instance, doesn't just slow the enemy but applies a damage debuff.
The primaries have a mix of utility - some which work better than others with ice patch. AR? Ignite/flamethrower on a ranged ice patch? No real risk. Your Ice/ has multiple holds available, strong AOEs and a nice cone.
Honestly, even with that ice/ice being 48, it sounds more like you need to reevaluate your tactics (why are you rooting yourself putting an ice patch - a *small* ice patch - down next to an AV instead of dealing damage and their associated slows/-rech? What is your tank doing? Why are you not, in team play, holding that ice patch until something breaks away - of course, again, ice/ice is going to give you holds to work with?)
I think the reason Ice Patch is pretty much perma out of the box is because it's short ranged and presents a bit of danger to use.

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

There is a reason why "Blapper" is such a common build type.

Ice Patch is fine as is in my opinion.
If I was going to change anything about Ice Manipulation, I'd start with giving Frozen Aura the Tanker treatment and add a damage compartment. A minion only sleep in such a small pbAoE is nothing short of an insult. It's the worst tier 9 in the game by far and the continued neglect balancing the Blaster power sets is a major turn off for me when it comes to this game.
Hmmm... as long as the range is severely limited, for example in the Caltrops range, I figure why not.
Well, considering that Ice Patch is also a power in the Tanker's Ice Melee pool, such a change might not be so peachy.
Personally, the way I config my keyboard, if I had to use the mouse to place the patch, it's just more cumbersome and slow and if I were on a Tank and surrounded by enemies, it might be an issue...

Powers can be changed on a per-set basis. The patch itself is likely the same between Blasters and Tanks, but the call power itself can be different.
Not that I'd want to see it changed either.
Never surrender! Never give up!

While in team play, I find myself having to run right up to the action and drop a Ice Patch down next to the Tank. In doing so, I risk life and limb especially when we are up against an AV. |

I know that the main effects and purpose for this power is to avoid getting clobbered by a close ranged melee attack below your feet, but what about during team play when you need to keep your Blasters space from the heated action with the Tank or Scrapper slugging it out and want to drop some Ice Patches near them and the battle?
So, why not make this a Ranged Location AoE power? Think about it, you can point and click to where you want the ice patch to go and keep your Blaster alive in the meantime. I know there are those of you who would say it is all in the technique when doing this. Believe me, I have developed a good technique by jumping back and out of the way when I lay down my Ice Patch. The bugaboo is in the special effects being that they take way too long to animate and during that brief time, you are completely vulnerable to attacks. What do you guys think, do you agree this should be a Ranged Location AoE power?
