Just coming back to CoH, wondered if you guys could tell me your thoughts of starting up on this server vs. another one?

First off, welcome back to CoH!

Virtue is the unofficial RP server, so if you've got a taste for roleplaying or just love fleshing out character concepts this is a good server to be on. It's also one of the busiest servers; it's usually the second most populated, but occasionally jumps to the #1 spot. Red side and Blue side are both relatively populated, and there's a very active Badge/TF/Raid community. There's also a lot of player run events, such as holiday events and costume contests.

If you like the idea of an active server with perhaps some RP on the side, Virtue just might be for you.

It's the only server I've been on since I started playing CoH.

I got my 45 month veteran badge on the 25th of June.

I've never wanted to go elsewhere.
I can see interesting characters, good costumes and character descriptions.
If I want, I can act in character.
Or if I just want a casual bit of gaming, I can do that and not get pressured about it.
I have no problems getting a team when I want it.

There are channels for teams, task forces, random conversations, non-random conversations, badges, monsters...

It is home.

Pretty much all what he said, except I'm only a 33 month vet, and I started on a different server, but moved to Virtue once I heard how awesome it is.

The first rule of Virtue, do not talk about Virtue!

Seriously, though. If you want to team, Virtue is one of the two most populated servers. And I like it better than Freedom, which is the other one.

Welcome back.

I'd say run while you can, but they've already seen you.

But seriously, Virtue is awesome...lots of groups, lots of groovy folks, lots of public event, and even a spiffy radio station if you want some tunes while you're playing (www.thecaperadio.com to check it out...also to check out any events they're DJing)

On the downside you tend to make so many friends when alting around that when you DO get a few serious RP characters/events/dramafests going it gets tough deciding who to log in as

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Seriously though, best server ever. And that goes for any other server on any other game.

Welcome to Virtue! Please remember to feed your local catgirls (to Lusca).

We've got regular Mothership raids, PvP, RPvP, and large numbers of players looking for teams. That means no matter what you like to do you can often find a group to do it with. If you do it in the D, wash your hands after, thanks.

Also, the forums are a fun game all on their own.

Virtue's great. It's the best server ever! Its residents often suffer from what appears to be a ((speech impediment)) but after awhile you won't even notice. For maximum Virtue enjoyment, I recommend joining the following channels. . .

  • Virtue LFG Alpha - for anything involving a team
  • Virtuebadges09 - for anything involving a badge
  • Virtue TFs 2010 - for anything involving a task or strike force
  • VirtueUnited - for anything involving anything (PM a mod to be unsilenced in here)

Enjoy quality teaming and good times: Enjoy Virtue!

Since everyone has given you the run down of what is good about the server I am gonna plays devil advocate here and tell you the biggest down sides...

Virtue is great and all but here, there is a really bad case of entitlement and drama. I attribute this to RP because some people get REALLY into their characters and I mean creepy levels of into it. So if you don't act like their character is god and the best thing ever they will hate you. Drama comes in all parts of an MMO but the added drama of the above said RP side is just something Virtue has alone. Of course someone will jump on me saying, "I have never seen this, so you are wrong." My point is it DOES happen and it MIGHT affect you. If you do not RP well then you wont have to deal with it at all really, but you still might get pulled into it by making friends with someone who has made an enemy out of a "popular" RPer.

Also if you have a thing against cat girls, like me >_>..., you might feel the need to jump through the internet and throttle some people at some points during your Virtue career.

"I am NOT a drama queen! Why do you hate me so much?" LOL Okay so it's true some RPers do take themselves a BIT too seriously here... I personally don't RP much at all so every single character I have sounds like me. Tips to avoid Virtue RP drama..

1. Stay away from the area under the statue of Atlas in Atlas Park. Pay no attention to the huge line of players all waiting for the next costume contest and quickly hit the Sewers with a new character. On a good sewer team you can emerge in King's Row above 7 level and ready to start running radios for your Raptor Pack

2. Unless the Winter or Valentine Event is running stay far, far away from Pocket D. This dark place is home to the serious RPers and you can find them there even at the oddest hours of day or night.

3. While RP does take place in other locales it is spotty and easy enough to avoid. If you see people in local chatting about their "super hero high school, etc".. Simply click on Ninja Run and get as far away as possible

Seriously.. the good points, including the global channels you want to find just about anything that's happening, have already been covered. I just pasted the 54 month mark as a VET and while I started on Infinity I moved here a LONG time ago and have no desire to leave. Welcome to the funny farm and remember Cat girls have feelings too so try to be nice and toss them a fish or a ball of yarn before moving away slowly to avoid startling them. :-D

Those seem like tips to avoid RP in general, not just RP drama!

To the original poster:

Bottom line is, if you absolutely loathe RP and cannot stand it, Virtue might not be the place for you. If you can tolerate it, or maybe even would like to give it a shot, hop on board! Virtue is pretty packed, which means you're bound to find -some- people who share your tastes in anything. There are also tons of events and a very wonderful community in this server.

Also, my rule of thumb: never judge a server by its cov-...err...forum community!

Well the thing about avoiding bad RP is that, MOST RP is bad RP. Seriously is it not something to phone home about when you get some decent RP in the D? Maybe I just measure the value of RP differently but to me the D is like a cesspool, I go there to mostly get some laughs while I work on an AE arc.

The only way to get really meaningful RP is to join a SG, the problem with that is most RPSGs and VGs I have joined have a leader who the entire group revolves around.

That and the community in this game isn't as inclusive as people would like to think. The population has been in steady decline and because of it people are becoming more and more insular, not hostile, but less out going.

If you wanted to make the list complete on avoiding RP just add to it the person who types [[ ]] around every (and I mean every) peice of chat has a special little keyboard.

I will say though I have seen an uptick of RP lately.

Perhaps you could look into ways you can improve the situation, starting with yourself?

Yes, this is a fine example of what I was talking about in my previous two post thank you very much.

I'm just saying, if you approach a large crowd of RPers of many different types with the mindset that "none of these people have anything to offer me", you're going to get that feeling of not being included.

Alright, but that isn't what I said. My point is if you are looking for good RP you probably wont find it in the D.

Silver Gale is a patron of the D, and a good roleplayer. So.

I hear what you're saying -- I've seen the same kind of thing with other locations in other games (Goldshire, anyone?). But there are always, always gems in the rough. If you're open to finding them, you'll find them. If you're not, which is what you're stating in a sweeping generalization, you won't.

The D's rep, while hard earned, is way overplayed. I'm sure some nights it's nearly the den scum and villany it used to be, but generally it's pretty tame today and there are some damn fine RPrs in there. Some of the topics aren't to my liking, but they do commit.

"Good RP" is a perfectly subjective term.

It is. It completly is. But the question ask for a subjective answer, what our opinions of the server is. I wont say that the D has no good RPers but by and large they keep to themselves and they aren't really open to random people steping in, WITH GOOD REASON mind you, so yeah...

As I said in the begining I am playing the devil's advocate. If I wasn't happy on Virtue I wouldn't be here.
