Give Merits for Everything and lets forget tickets.
No. Just.... no.
For one thing, I'm much happier burning tickets on salvage and whatnot. They're fine.
For another, you already *get* merits for finishing story arcs.
Merits for reporting? No. Just no.
Just get everyone on one system.. Give people a reason to run and complete missions and not farm them. I really feel it will allow players to actually play their characters instead of the 2 games within Cox called Farm and Market. |
The people who want to play the market will do so regardless.
ANd the people like me, who *do* run missions - yes, even with the 50s - are going to do so regardless of whatever other rewards you come up with.
No. Just.... no.

I also did mention that people will farm.. And people will play the market regardless.
But what of the people who have no interest in the market game.. Or the farm game.. Why can't we play the game for what it was meant to be which is playing a hero or a villain..
What is the purpose of doing a mission and getting tickets, when you can do missions and get Merits. Well they have to be contact story lines.. You don't get merits for paper missions. Or at least from what I noticed.. But could be wrong.
And once you do a mission which takes pretty much the same it takes to do a contact mission.. You get tickets for some random stuff.. which 80% of the time you don't need and is listed on the market for 500 inf.
Is it a horrible idea.. No, but why not just allow players to get what they want to get ?.
Some how you got the wrong impression that I don't do missions with my 50s.. I do.. That is how I obtain those hard to get IOs. But I do solo runs with toons to obtain tickets. I did 8k and got more junk then something worth while. Other then that I am pretty much at max capacity for a SG/ VG with 18 salvage / Storage bins.. 21 slots in mailbox and toons just holding Inventions to be sent in mail to be created..
Further I have only once had someone ask me if I wanted to some AE missions and ONLY because they wanted me to check out the missions and then rate them, of course the player was the creator running 2 accounts.
And you know on top of all this I do play the market game.. I make stuff and sell it with toons I am waiting to respec..
But in the end I'm farming tickets.. I'm farming Merits.. And I'm playing the market game.. And for what ?
I will tell you for what.. Because I would like to have a decent build like many other players. I want to have good build so I don't need to die 5x during a mission.. Maybe even one day create a PvP toon and spend 2 billion to be of any good use in RV zone.
If your gonna tell me your doing random AE missions just to check them out on a regular basis and not farming some sort of AE mission.. I will tell you, I just find it hard to believe.. I won't call you a liar.. But I just don't believe your just plugging in random AE missions.
You know when I do AE.. When I have so much " STUFF " that I just need for it to sell before I can acquire more "STUFF" .
Your saying people are going to farm.. Your right.. But why is it being made easier for them to do it ?.. Your level 1.. BAM you can run to AE kill some fat chick in a clown costume and your getting a level.. You go in the mission level 1, you come out level 6.. What the hell is that ??
At least when people where farming, you either where helping out or looking to buy a seat for the ride..
Look AE has just not turned into what they expected.. Or what many players expected.. You can't find a veteran player that will say AE has made this a better game.. Veteran meaning someone who was here before AE came out..
Look I am a fair and just man.. I believe if you put some effort into it you should be rewarded.. I'm fortunate that I can put some time into the game.. But I am noticing more and more I am spending less time playing and more time managing.. I feel I am putting more effort in then being rewarded and from reading a few post here and on the Market forums I see others feel the same..
You like Tickets.. I like Merits.. Fine, lets call it Merkits or Ticits..
Why can't we just collect these Merkits/Ticits for doing either or and use them how WE feel.. I hear ya.. you like random chance.. By all means.. Use yours for random chance.. I don't like Random chance after spending 10 hours of game play to collect 8k worth of tickets.. I want to spend my tickets on something I want.. Its like Skeet ball at the amusement park.. You get those tickets or your kid does.. Is the guy your giving the ticket to for a prize telling you or your son has to get some girls doll in wedding dress.. Or is your boy gonna be able to pick out that plastic Slinky that will break in the car before you get home ?
I mean there has to be a reason they reduce the ticket rate for repeating the same TF/SF within a period of time..
Otherwise people would be FARMING THEM... Get the point..
At a minimum let me do a random roll within some sort of IO branch.. type.. Field.. As I mentioned my tank doesn't need that Hold IO regardless of how great it is..
You know, has it occurred to anyone that maybe players really don't care if they did a bronze rolls and picked up 2 Num + regen/recharges, even if they don't need them. Because they can sell them on the market.. How about instead of wasting more of my time selling these 2 IOs on the market and then trying to bid for the item I want..
Why not just let me get what I wanted in the first place... And save me the 2 or 3 days of waiting and hoping the items sell or that some crazy change in the market makes them worth 100k instead of 100mil.
You can respond with no one is forcing you to do any of that.. But end result is you are or you end up with a character based on SOs which is pretty crappy now a days in all honesty..
How many people looking to do a SF or a TF are going to pick up the same Tank/Brute knowing they are only in SOs.. None, unless they have someone already IOed out..
I do ITF regularly with my Kin. Just by the damage someone takes I can tell they are in SOs or IOs. Granted some take IOs and lose sight of there purpose. But there still is a difference in survivability.
I'm just sick and tired of GRINDING 2 different systems hoping one gives me a decent break today on the rolls or that I can get the 250 tickets needed to buy a certain IO either to sell to so I can then Bid on the IO I really want.. Or save up the inf needed to try to bid for it next week. Assuming it is still in same price range.
Even Salvage goes for crazy prices.. One day Iron Salvage is 100 inf.. Next day its at 5k because 2 guys decided to buy it all and resell it for higher.. You do know that players do that to influence the market prices to there advantage. Its a pain in backside having to now wait 2 or 3 days for it come back down to a more reasonable price. Otherwise your the schmuck doing the impluse buy which is what they wanted in the first place.
Again there is no way of obtaining something decent in a reasonable amount of time when your trying to hedge your bets on 2 systems..
NOW if I could do 50% of one thing and then 50% of another but have 100% from both.. That would be GREAT....
Otherwise I will be perfectly honest.. I don't care about the award winning AE mission someone special did.. Because I end up getting 100 tickets for his cool looking mission with the great storyline and detail that is gonna cost me 40 minutes to do.
I will be doing the mission that gives me the most reward.. Even if its beating up a Zombie clown.. Repeatedly.
I will be doing the 3 Respec missions because they still give out 14 merits each.
And eventually I will be making that Brute or bringing my scrapper over to the villain side.. And yes he is a shield electric fire scrapper. Very original, I know...

I would like to see some changes in the reward systems myself, but to be honest, the current state of affairs is not bad at all. Think about it, in other games the absolute best "gear" can only be obtained if you are a member of a "raiding" group and participate regularly. Often you have to work your way thru a rotation, which means many sessions of "scratching the backs of others" until your name is at the top of the "loot reel".
Salvage : Piece of cake, run some AE missions and use tickets to purchase what you need. The only "random" salvage is the common stuff and at 8 tickets a pop, its nothing to get what you need. When I check the Auctions and see commons going for 100K or some such insanity, what I need is 1 AE arc away.
Influence : Yeah having the influence to buy those nice IO recipes is a concern, but after you hit level 50 and can do level 50 missions with Bosses, you should start seeing "Purple" recipes. You COULD keep them for yourself, or sell them for a big chunk of influence like I do. Even solo, I have made between 100million and 300million doing PI radios over the course of a weekend. I am a casual player, so I am certain that other folks can do even better than this.
Recipes : There are two kinds of recipes in my book; The ridiculously expensive and High demand recipes (LoTG, Miracle +rec, Numina proc, Kinetic Combat etc...) and the low to moderate cost recipes (everything less than about 30million). You use merits to get the ridiculous cost ones, and your Influence to get the moderate and cheap ones.
If you split your time between Merit Story Arcs, AE missions and Level 50 Missions, you will eventually get everything you need, provided you spend the commensurate amount of time doing so. The best part of the whole system is that none of the IO recipes are unavailable to any person. You dont need to be a "hard-core" raider, or farmer to get what you want. You simply need to "chip" away at your build one IO at a time, and eventually you will be done.
What I personally have trouble with is the difficulty of getting anything "Randomly". Those rare moments when something really cool drops are very nice, but they are almost never on your list of "needs". I sell more than 95% of what drops for me, and thats a bit too high IMO. Some ideas that I have thought would be cool are the following;
"SWAP MEET" You take your salvage over to this in-game bazaar and you can trade in 3 of any type of salvage for 1 of an equal value and type. Ex: need a "Luck Charm", trade in 3 common Magic salvage to get 1 Luck Charm. Need a Rare, trade in 3 Rares and choose the specific Rare you want.
"RESEARCH LABORATORY" Much like the Day-jobs, where you camp out for a certain amount of time, you can go to the Research Facility and access their main frame which lists every recipe known to man. You pick ONE and only one recipe to research. As long as you camp out in the Lab at the end of your play session, time will accrue towards the research of the recipe you have chosen. The amount of time will be factored on your level and the level of the recipe as well as it's rarity. Eventually, you will log in and get a message that your recipe has been crafted and you can rush over and pick it up. Then begin again on a new recipe if desired.
"COMMODITY BROKER" How about a straight up purchase of Merits or trade Merits for Influence. I have no clue how much 1 merit should cost, but based on WW pricing it should be between 250K and 500K per Merit. So need merits, bring cash. Need Cash, bring Merits. There would need to be a limit of how many you could trade in a given amount of time since Brokers cannot move "hot" items faster than they can find "buyers" for them.

dear plainguy,
im going to agree with bill. and i am also only goingot say HELL NO to any of your ideas in this thread. if i say anything else it will cause a **** storm of arguing that you will lose.
Simple idea..
Give merits for everything.. You complete a mission you get X amount of merits.. You complete a story line or whatever you want to call it, you get bonus merits. |
People do AE missions you get merit rewards.. The creator of the AE gets merits for people doing his missions.. A person is currently allowed to create 3 missions in AE.. If a player creates 3 missions and links them together consider it a mini TF, think Respec mission. Players get bonus merits for completing that. You only get merits for completing missions. |
I would expect that the first thing we would see would be strings of very short missions on very small maps to minimize time per mission. Number of merits rewarded would have to reflect this.
AE farms.. You have 2 ways with this.. 1. Find the common denominator for these farms and code it from people obtaining Merits for completion.. They might get Experience, but nothing else. 2. Hate to say it but warn and then punish repeat offenders of the AE system. Simple 3 strikes and your out.. You get warned 3 x and the AE is deleted. 4th time your locked from creating an AE mission for a week or so.. Do it again.. the ban is longer.. 3. Give people merits for reporting farm type missions. Okay I know #2 is pretty rough and not great PR for the company.. Then your gonna have to make sure #1 is solid.. Or more solid then it is now. |
Regarding #3, I'm wary of this. I remember an AE thread where the OP went on a tirade about farming (as in the MMO definition) and how there were so many cheaters and exploiters and yada yada. Then they posted over a hundred mission arc numbers that all had the word "Farm" in them. Many of those were farm-themed (as in barnyard with horses, chickens and bales of hay kind of 'farm') and were in no way indicative of farming as we know it in an MMO.
I will be the first to say reporting for merits is not the greatest idea.. I did infer that when I mentioned it..
I also did mention that people will farm.. And people will play the market regardless. But what of the people who have no interest in the market game.. Or the farm game.. Why can't we play the game for what it was meant to be which is playing a hero or a villain.. |
If your gonna tell me your doing random AE missions just to check them out on a regular basis and not farming some sort of AE mission.. I will tell you, I just find it hard to believe.. I won't call you a liar.. But I just don't believe your just plugging in random AE missions. |
No! The more of something you give someone to less value is has. if you have a very small ammount of something it becomes very valuable like gold, and therefore if you have an abundance of something it has very low value like sand.
This same principle applies to merits. if you give people loads of merits, they start to lose their value, which leads to people not wanting them anymore. This would make it too easy to aquire certain IO's and slavage, causing their value to deteriorate.
This deterioration of value would create a dommino effect making IO's that are less useful almost entirely worthless, as well as making those more useful and very rare even more valuable meaning that it would be even harder to earn the inf for Purple sets and the like.
Concidering this, the only way to keep the games economy balanced would be to increase the number of merits needed to purchase the IO's and salvage. However, becasue everything in game (except inf) would now be bought through merits, the merits needed to buy them would increase by a very large ammount. Now im not an expert in balance, but if merit rewards become 10x more common, and there are 10x as many items that can be bought with them then to balance the new system items would require around 20x as many merits to buy enevitably making everything more expensive.
So to conclude, adding more merits to the game, rather than making it easier, would make it a lot harder to build your character, as well as demotivating people to earn merits becasue of their very low worth. It's like, if you had the choice of spending loads of money to find gold and making a nice profit in a short amount of time, or spending very little collecting sand, but spending years of tireless labour to make the same profit, which one would you choose??
Actually Neon,
IF Merits became more easily acquired (And I am not saying they should be) then the value of Purchased items in the Auction would go down due to the fact that MORE of certain recipes would be available. It does not stand to reason that the Developers would then have to increase the cost of recipes to "prop-up" the market.
I play on Protector which is a lower population server, and I can tell you that the "Market" in general could use an infusion of product, even if that meant the prices went down a little. Choose any recipe and scan thru all the levels and you will not find much available except the recipes that are only used for Franken-slotting. Any recipes in high demand will have very high prices and most likely not for sale.
My feeling is that the game market is "pretty good", and definitely "good enough" to allow even the casual player to "trick-out" their character with all the best IOs. This is a situation that you will not find in other MMOs. However, "pretty good" is not "perfect", so it doesnt hurt to entertain ideas on how to improve the situation.

Merits for all...
I say no. Thank you
I am not saying my idea is the end all be all. Maybe someone can think of something better. Again many ideas are off shoots of something else..
Further Does anyone remember when Merging the markets was "IMPOSSIBLE"
Wait it is possible now.. Oh MY, the earth and heavens must have been split in two to get this accomplished.. Or maybe someone(s) with some coding skills finally figured out how to do it..
I just leveled a Robot Traps up to 44 so far.. I have 40 million on me.. I had other toons make him some standard IOs. I would have had less if I had to buy the salvage and pay the fees to make anything I picked up.. Not including what I would have had to buy also. So I would have less then 40 million at level 44.. I have NOT picked up anything special or anything rare yet that I could benefit from to create a decent build with NO purple IOs... Again you can go over to the Mastermind forums to look up any builds I have to see.
Purple IOs is considered the lottery to me.. Meaning I will never consider having the ability to afford and use Purple IO sets.. This is also why I do not even try to PvP anymore.. Purple make that much of a difference.
End result everyone has mentioned either Farm and Market are optional and you can get enough money to buy stuff on market.. The reality is it just is not the facts. My character account is proof of that..
You are required to Farm or Market to obtain decent IOs or the money needed to purchase these IOs.
You cannot just do this through regular game play is all I am saying.. Well in all fairness you can.. But it would probably take you 8 months of doing missions at level 50 to obtain the cash required for a decent non purple IO build..
There is no casual put your stuff on the market and wait for it to sell.. I do that.. I can't count the number of times I sell below the current lowest price, only to see the next day the item is selling for less then half.. My items sits on market for 2 weeks before I have to take it down to resell.
Many make this stuff sound easy. .Hey I do AE farms on Monday and Wed.. And I do ST/TF on Tues and Thurs.. Then on friday and sat I do missions.. Then sunday I collect all my money from the market stuff I sold..
Thats great if you have 7 days a week to play the game.. You shouldn't be forcing people to conform to a system to obtain something.. It should be optional..

Have you been wasting your money by buying SOs when Common IOs drop like rain? Teaming maybe? You're a MM, you carry your own summonable team with you, and they don't suck up the drops like live teammates do.

Those sets that I have where the IOs vary wildly from L35-50? They are capped in thier main attribute (damage in the case of Crushing Impact or Thunderstrike, etc.) and good enough in thier secondary attributes (Rech/endred/Acc in those two sets) for my taste.
No, I don't bother with garbage like "Airburst".

I really feel it will allow players to actually play their characters instead of the 2 games within Cox called Farm and Market.

Your ideas are basically an attempt to force people to play the way you want to play and what makes you're way of playing the "right" way.
I guess people don't mind doing thing repeatedly. To obtain Tickets or Merits.. Or even IOs.
I just found it a bit dumbfounding when I just did my 3 respecs and ITF for the 4th day in a row to obtain merits.. It really just got to the point of what the heck am I doing.. Like Pacman trying to get his next dot or some junkie trying to get my next fix.. Even the people I do them with complain how it sucks, but what are you gonna do.. It really is a hamster wheel.
It has got to the point where paying 20 bucks for 2 billion is just much easier and much more beneficial then the time spent doing what I am doing now.. 2 billion would last me a life time. I can just clear out all the salvage racks.. Sell everything I get at the vendors and be done with it.. The build is done.. I can move on to my next toon.

In the last 8 months I have levelled Biospark from 1 to 50. Levelled a WP-Fire tank from 1-50, levelled a half dozen other characters into the 20s, spent over 1 billion influence on Biospark's first and second builds(combined). Earned enough influence to have over 700 million on my account and have both his builds nearly done. I dont farm or speed run anything. The best farming that I have been involved with was +1/x5 on my tanker. I also only play on weekends and a hour here and there during the week.
This does not mean that I dont empathise with your position, but it is not really necessary to spend 8 months on one build, unless your play time is very limited. To be honest, once you hit level 50, what else are you going to do? Making it take some amount of time to put together a good build gives you something to work on.
The question is whether the availability of recipes is not satisfactory enough. On this I would tend to agree. Because, I am always analyzing the builds I put together and want to perfect them to handle "delevelled story arcs". When I look at some of the IOs in my build that get "excised" at lower levels simply because the level 25 or level 35 recipes were not for sale, thats when I start getting that "grinding" feeling about my builds. Imagine the annoyance of needing to overwrite an expensive IO with the same IO but lower level so it functions on "such-and-such" TF. Getting recipes COULD be made easier, I just dont know the best way to do it in a balanced way.

I don't care how it's implemented however, I have to truly agree that merits are given out at a joking rate...
The cost for recipes is way too high. They either need to cut the merit price in half or double the merits.

/Unsinged.
They have balance ae tickets to the ae system. They have balanced merits to the general mission rewards system. They have balanced Rikti merits to the saucer raid. If people were able to use all these rewards on any map then the devs will have to balance everything to each other.
The prices are fine. Nothing needs to be changed. The ability to cherry pick your recipes comes with a cost.
|
You can obtain regular salvage and IOs for AE missions.. Why can't you obtain Merits ?
You want to play 8 tickets for a random salvage.. I am willing to pay 12 merits for the salvage of my choice..
Your willing to pay 70 tickets for a random IO.. I am willing to pay 100 merits for a IO of my choice.
You know.. Make the IOs purchased with Merits a different color and have them linked to the account.. You can trade them within your account but you can never sell them..
See the simple and obvious point is.. Others are looking to make money. I am not.. I could care less.. I want to create a build.. That is it.. I don't need game money..
Some people really just want to play the game and not be stock brokers and bankers.. You want to do that.. Great.. Fine.. By all means..
But give me and players like myself that enjoy just creating a build because we can and to see what it can do the ability to do it without all this foolishness.
Give me a way to forgo any influence and infamy give me Merits or whatever, make them so they cannot be traded.. And I'm fine.. I go do missions, collect only merits and I trade those in for premade IOs. End result I don't get over on anyone.. It has zero effect on everyone.. I have no infulence on any market or any player since I have nothing to sell or trade or buy.

Create a way for people to link story arcs. So if group gets together to do the Slot Machine contact missions ( yes there is a contact call slot machine ) and one player is on mission 1 and others are on mission 4. The players are able to click a link button that will allow everyone to start off on mission 2.. The benefit is those who already did it will get merits at the end again..
Create a search option where people can find others doing the same contact missions and where they are in the mission story line. This way I can find players on part 4 like me instead of redoing missions 2 and 3, because I'm like that.. I want to finish the story line to get my bonus merits and move on to another story line..
Now imagine how crowded Ouroboros will be with people trying to complete old story archs.
People get Badges, they get merits.. People get Accolades, they get merits..
Then you buy what you want with these merits.. Now IF your one of those players that like gambling, then allow players to random roll within a designated group.. I'm a Tank I want to roll between heal and defense sets.. I don't care about Mezz or Hold buffs.
This way by level 50 a player who does no farming but just straight mission leveling should have enough between drops..Inf.. and Merits to create a decent 50 build or the ability to buy maybe a set or partial set of purple IOs. If that is what the player wants.
I just do not see the purpose of having tickets.. it's a complete crap shoot for the time spent. Further your do not know how good or bad a mission might be, until you do it. You know some people are good at creating missions And then you have people that stink.. I'm in the stink department.
But at the end you have these tickets that you might have over 1000 or 8k like myself and have no clue what to do with them. Simply because you don't have enough room on your characters and mailbox to hold these rewards. You will random roll 8k in tickets and get some decent stuff but the rest is garbage. I wouldn't slot some of that stuff on my dog side kick..
The whole purpose of the AE system has been warped. It holds a data bank full of possibly great missions. But I am positive that most of the missions being run are some sort of farm.
I'm glad that some 30s cartoon creator plays the game and developed a missions that the dev rated #1.. But the greatest mission creator is that 15 year old kid that allowed you to farm some green blob called joe and got you from level 1 to level 20 in 1 mission.
Just get everyone on one system.. Give people a reason to run and complete missions and not farm them.
I really feel it will allow players to actually play their characters instead of the 2 games within Cox called Farm and Market.
