Could someone explain the Global Friends list?
Handle: Global handle
Status: Current character name
If you click the little arrow thingy in the bottom right corner you get even more info like which server/shard they're on, what zone they're in, if they are in a team and how many are on that team.
Actually, it's pretty self explanatory.
The first column, Handle, is the Global Name of a player. The @ isn't listed in front of it, but that's their @Global.
The second column, Status, lets you know if someone is online or offline. If they are offline, it says OFFLINE. However, if they're online, it lists the name of the character they're currently logged in with.
If you click the little arrow in the bottom right corner, the window expands, and adds some extra columns.
Shard is the Server they're playing on.
Map is the type of map they're on: Zone, Mission, Arena, Base.
Level, Archetype, Origin, and Team Size are what they say they are.
Note that if any of your friends have changed their @Global, your Global Friends list will show the new @Global, and unless you recognize the new @Global, or the name of the character listed under Status, you may not know who the person is.
There have been a few times I've seen a "new" name in my Global Friends list, and had to send a tell asking, "Umm... who are you again?".

Biggest Troll on the forums? I'll give you a hint:

Maybe I'm just blind, but...
With the GFriends window open I hit "Add",
I type in "@Asparagus" and Enter.
Now I expect to see "Asparagus" in the left-hand column, but don't?
Maybe I just didn't look closely enough.

Okay, thanks for the help.

You can stalk characters, but you can't stalk players

Unlike the server friends list, global friends have to accept the friend invite.

So what happens if the person I add is not online at that moment?
Will the request appear for them when they next log in?

Make sure when you add them, you're actually adding their global name. Just adding their current character name with a @ symbol in front of it will NOT add them as a global friend, unless their global is the same which is rarely the case.
There should be some sort of system message after you attempt to add someone to your global friends list.
As SPiNE mentioned, adding the '@' symbol doesn't make it go to their global if it's not their global name.
To make sure you are sending your Global Friend Request to the right name, use the following command for getting their global name.
/getglobalname |
type in "/getglobalname" and it says:
Firecracker Kidd has the global handle: Captain Kiddie
Now that you know the actual global name, you can add "Captain Kiddie" in as your request and then wait for them to log in and accept.
If they accept/decline your friendship, there is no notice to you if you're not logged on when they accept/decline. However, if you are online together, it will say "@Captain Kiddie is now global friends" or "You are not global friends with that player" or some such message in System Chat.
Shadow Ravenwolf has one method: As SPiNE mentioned, adding the '@' symbol doesn't make it go to their global if it's not their global name. To make sure you are sending your Global Friend Request to the right name, use the following command for getting their global name. Pretty simple. Let's say Firecracker Kidd is the character you're teaming with that you'd like to add as a global friend. Well let's say that Firecracker Kidd isn't his global name. @Firecracker Kidd will do nothing to add him to your list. type in "/getglobalname" and it says: Firecracker Kidd has the global handle: Captain Kiddie Now that you know the actual global name, you can add "Captain Kiddie" in as your request and then wait for them to log in and accept. If they accept/decline your friendship, there is no notice to you if you're not logged on when they accept/decline. However, if you are online together, it will say "@Captain Kiddie is now global friends" or "You are not global friends with that player" or some such message in System Chat. |
Dec out.
Alternatively, and often easier...if you have their name in your chat anywhere (like, they said something, not someone used their name) just left click on their name, a menu will pop up and one of the choices will be "get Global name".
|
/bind KEY "info$$getglobalname $target"
That will show me their Global Name in my chat window, as well as pop up their info window to see their bio, powers and badges.
M-B, is there anything you don't have a bind ready for?
Dec out.
I even have a global bind that reloads my global bind file in case I add something to it. haha
It's hard to say.. if I found something useful that I didn't have a bind for, I'd bind it and I wouldn't be missing it anymore. Many of them have come from player requests in this forum that sounded like a good idea and we improvised. lol

I have that one. I also have my binds file accessible on my laptop to edit on the fly. Have found it very useful for setting up my MM and testing new binds.
|
On a side note, I also keep my screenshot folder shared so I can easily post stuff onto the forum. I don't do any browsing on that PC at all.
I use a pop menu for getting name info. Option 1 will run /getglobalname $target. Option 2 will run /beginchat getlocalname. Option 3 will run /beginchat getglobalname.
I don't use Option 2 very much. Option 3 comes in handy if the person isn't in the same zone as me (i.e. they zoned before I could get the info).
I have I bound to /info to pull up the info window for any selected target.

I have one general bind file for all toons. I load that on all new toons, and it has binds to load chat settings and some other stuff, plus a ton of binds I use in-game.
Then, some characters also have a character-specific bind file.

I would be interested in seeing people's bind files to get ideas and see proper syntax for some things.
If you're willing to share, drop me a PM here and I'll shoot you my email address so you can send them.
Thanks

I have a better idea. Ask on the forums and we'll answer on the forums so everyone can see it. Lots of people may be interested.

For example, if I sent you the file for my Emp/Rad defender, she has specialized targeting binds for the team and special keys for the aura, targeted heal, etc.. A tank has a bind to activate all toggles (after a few key presses), and a key for taunt (same key as my Emp's targeted heal). A blaster has the speed-on-demand stuff set up for flight, which my other characters don't have. Some powers I have bound to all characters similarly like toggling ninja run, or mystic fortune, and even a handful of emotes... Then we have Kheld and MM specific stuff...
There are so many possibilities. Without knowing what you are interested in, it's hard to pick the correct file.
I can see where asking here is a good choice because it lets others see too.
Part of the problem is not knowing what can be done and where to begin. I myself have a "generic.txt" file that has stuff like chat binds, targeting, and other binds that are shared between all of my characters. I then have each "character name.txt" that has the binds specific to that character like my Team Select + Speed Boost bind for my Troller.
For me, I would love to be able to share with everyone what I'm trying to do. The reason I ask for files is because it allows me to look at what's been done and get ideas for what I'm trying to accomplish
I look at collecting bind files the same way I do with builds. I have over 500 builds in my Mids folder. Do I need or use all of them? No. But by looking through them and comparing scenarios, I find what it is I'm searching for.
I'll do some searching and try to put my thoughts together for a thread here later that can accomplish what I'm doing in an open atmosphere.
I don't "get" how my Global Friends list works.
I've only tried to use it properly twice in 5 years, and on both occasions I ended up stymied.
There are two "names" shown, one under Status. I think the Status line shows the name of the current character (if online), but neither one appears to be the Global handle of any of my GFriends.
How do I tell who's who if the Global Handle isn't indicated?
