new guy..
hey folks human, mechanical, mutant.. or otherwise.
im new to the game.. always interested me but other game always pulled me away. felt it was time to settle back and attempt this game. so i have a few questions.. feel free to chime in with anything be it a definite answer or not. question 1: anyway to set the camera to auto-adjust i just find myself having some issues with the control of my field of vision. and often end up staring at my direction of travel or target in an awkward way or not at all. question 2: where to play. not a fan of smaller servers. they tend to be full of dysfunctional or closely knit communities i just cant break into. ideally towards superhero but im open to the idea of villainy if there is enough reason. and general tips would help but beyond those two i got nothing in need of answer.. as of yet. who knows we may see each other sooner than you think :P |
*Although, when you attack something, your character turns towards it, and the camera maintains it's orientation to the character, turning too. If you don't like this camera movement, you can hold down right mouse button to keep the camera where it is, your character will turn while attacking, and then return to face away from the camera once the animation finishes.
Q2; Generally, for North American servers, Freedom and Virtue are the most populated two. Virtue, however, is where most of the roleplayers flock to (not a good or a bad thing, except in Pocket D sometimes, but it may influence your decision). If you're on the European servers... Union? I don't know. One of the two English servers is the most populated one, I believe. But I'd wait for one of the European players to correct me, if this applies to you at all.
Other tips? uh... Depending on your gaming history, forget all you know about the holy trinity (Tank, DPS, Healer). It doesn't really apply here. Our archtypes blur the lines too much for it to be of use. And Buffs are generally far more effective than heals. It's not that heals aren't useful, just that preemptive buffing is better than playing health bar whack-a-mole. Also, the death penalty is trivial; after lvl 10, faceplanting gives debt, which halves your XP income until the debt is payed off (the cap for debt is lower than it used to be, and there's more ways to reduce it and pay it off than ever before).
Only other thing, have fun, try a little of everything, and take it easy. There is no need to rush to 50. Where other games* put most of their content on the end of the leveling grind, ours is relatively evenly spaced amongst all levels. Higher level characters can go back and play anything they missed along the way, too, if creating many alternate characters doesn't appeal to you.
Hope I've helped you out, good luck in your adventures.

General tip: Stamina. As you get more powers, your endurance usage goes up (esp. in the late teens.) There is a pool called Fitness; the last power in it is called Stamina and it helps greatly with endurance usage. To get Stamina, there are two requirements: you need to have two other powers in the pool first and you need to be level 20 or higher.
The EARLIEST you can get Stamina is level 20, and there is a common assumption on these forums that you MUST get Stamina at level 20. This is not true- but I'd aim for Stamina by level 24.
Two [or more] sets have powers that work like Stamina, but better (and without the prereqs): Regeneration and Willpower. (There may be others I'm not thinking of.) If you have those sets you don't need Stamina. Some people get Stamina anyway, later in the game, but you don't need Stamina.
If you're REALLY REALLY having endurance problems, try inviting one or two people onto your team (explaining that you're new- your problem in this game if you tell people you're new is usually "too much advice") and you'll find that you run out of enemies before you run out of ammo.

So you think you're a hero, huh.
@Boltcutter in game.

Top: Server you were last on
2nd: Server with the least CURRENT population (i.e. people logged on RIGHT NOW)
3rd: Server with the 2nd least...
4th: Server with the 3rd least...
...
...
...
...
Bottom: Server with the MOST people logged on right now.
Freedom has the most people, and was a good place to find PvP'ers for a while.
Virtue is second, with a friendly community and a lot of RP'ers.
Justice and I think Infinity have a lot of folks as well.
Anyway, check out the paragonwiki in my sig. There is an older version out there with "wikia" in the address: avoid it at all costs! (The wikia version has malicious links)
question 1: anyway to set the camera to auto-adjust i just find myself having some issues with the control of my field of vision. and often end up staring at my direction of travel or target in an awkward way or not at all.

What this does is pull the camera back to its default position - just behind your head. I usually play with this view anyway - I leave the middle mouse button alone entirely, and use the right mouse button to turn, which moves not only the camera but your character with it. Give this a try, let us know if it works for you.

While the smaller servers DO have closer knit communities, the people on CoH are very friendly to new players and willing to help folks get integrated into activities. One of the best ways to introduce yourself is to post something in the server-specific forum boards. Say hello and that you are new and that you are looking to find some good folks for teaming. Say what times you expect to be on. I bet you will get lots and lots of volunteers.
Also, there is the Mentoring Project, which puts you in contact with a veteran player. One thing often cited by players from other games is how friendly our community is.
As others have said, try out lots of stuff. I started on Liberty with a scrapper. Now, Guardian is my main server, and I have far more Controllers than any other archtype ... and Controller is the last of the 5 Hero basic archtypes that I tried.
LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

What Local said. Things are a lot friendlier on the small servers than would initially appear, you just have to "go" to where they communicate. The above is how, along with joining one of your server's global channels. Finding people through broadcast or searches is tougher on the smaller servers, because they tend to gravitate more towards the above methods.

Welcome to the CITY!
Well another option is joining Chat Global Channels. Alot of TF/Team/ and RP groups could be found that way even on a low populated server.
And if all else fails The Urban Fox post in broadcast or the Global channels "I'm new to the game and would like someone to show me around"
It might work.

Howdy Fox! I've only been around for about a year and a half myself, so I can still remember what it's like to be the new guy . Here's a few things I wish I'd learned earlier on:
- Don't waste slots on Brawl, Sprint or Rest. You'll just want them back later.
- Don't worry about money. By the mid-20's you should have several million inf just from playing normally. It's as easy as breathing to make inf in this game, even if you decide never to use the Consignment House / Black Market. (But if you do, you might find that making inf is easier than breathing.)
- Save your free tailor tokens for the higher levels. Ten thousand inf seems like a lot early on, but around the mid 40's costume changes start regularly costing 1 and 2 million. That's not much once you reach that level, but why spend free vouchers on cheap stuff?
- If you change your settings or options at all, and you want other characters to have those same settings, click the 'Save to Default' button. You can 'Load from Default' at any time, plus new characters automatically load the default file.
- ParagonWiki is your friend. CohTitan is your friend's supergroup.
- "cityofheroes.wikia" is NOT your friend. It is a bad person in a smelly van trying to offer you candy. Do not take its candy. (It was taken over with malware a while back and I don't think it's ever been fixed.)
- Never be afraid to ask questions, both in the game and here on the forums. There's always goodhearted folks around who like helping people out.

Welcome to City
Another tip; check out the areas of this forum... there are a ton fo great guides made by other players that will better help you understand this game... and never be afraid to ask question in game or here liek you did. Most important of all, have fun!!!
It's better to save the Mystery, than surrender to the secret...
