Naming Idea
I prefer unique naming, so not really for this idea. I always found names easy to come by.
My question is that does font add enough or any data to distinguish names?
Player 1 =/= Player 1?

I guess the real problem lies in how many other game functions are "touched" by the name-bit. Imagine being force-joined to a team because your alter ego hit invite accepted. Ewww

What if multiple font styles could be incorporated into the names, so that first you would pick a font, then type out your name. Just adding a few Font-styles would allow more names to open up. |
If "Awesome Man" is taken, why not just use "Awesome-Man", "Awesome Man.", "Awesome Man'", or any other permutation of that?
If your character is such a super special unique snowflake that you can't stand to have horrible, evil punctuation afflicting your name, just think up of a new name.

How do we tell the game which RandomJoe we ACTUALLY want to greet?

Sorry, still going to /unsign this, for reasons already mentioned.
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

Yeah, sorry, but I don't see this working as a viable option.
What I WOULD like to see with naming is that they allow you to use "The" in your characters name.
"Darn, Exquisitor is taken. Maybe I can be The Exquisitor... oh.. no, it takes 'The' and puts it in the box just before name box..."
Now I know it's mainly for the "Title" you get to choose starting at level 15, but still, if I want to be "The Incredible Unbreakable The Exquisitor" it's my choice!

Although this has lead to some really creative names and character concepts, I have always wished that naming was more available. What if multiple font styles could be incorporated into the names, so that first you would pick a font, then type out your name. Just adding a few Font-styles would allow more names to open up. I understand that this would create the in-game phenomena of running into someone using the same name as your character, but this occurrence would probably be less frequent than you may suppose since most of us have tons of alts running around. Anyone think this would be good ? |
Lemme throw another wrench into the gears. Macs and PCs do not share at least a fair number of fonts, if not more. Both play this game. What happens if I use a Mac-only font? Does every PC user in the zone crash?

Names I've recently claimed:
Desert Spear
Solemn Shadow
Amplified Assassin
Serpent Lance
It really isn't that hard. You don't have to break out a thesaurus, but if you do so it can lead to some very cool sounding names. Also, whenever it gets a little tough to find a name, I always use Seventh Sanctum's hero/villain name generator. It doesn't give you great choices, but it almost always gives me a better idea for possible names.
Your suggestion would cause a ton of confusion and make people frustrated. Even if it's a different font, it would still irk people that somebody else is running around with their name that they created. Plus, how would you tell people apart? I could run around named Captain Awesome in a different font and claim that I'm the original Captain Awesome. There would really be no way to prove that Captain Awesome is the original while Captain Awesome is not.
Arc ID: 348998 - Becoming a villain
Arc ID: 373341 - To Save a Hero
Got Inf?
Stalkerbane
Wraithmage
Demonation
Yofiel
Labradorite
Aetherwytch
Photosphere
Tachyonwave
Amunet
Bioshokk
Skystryke
Infradead
So there's plenty of one word names left.
You mean a name with as many kool letterz as "Skystryke" was still available? I'm XTREME-ly shocked!

The font idea has a nice comic book vibe to it, but it doesn't seem like it would work well in practice as a method of allowing duplicate names. It might be cool to use the idea just for custom name display purposes, though.

Never play another NcSoft game, If you feel pride for our game, then it as well, I Superratz am Proud of all of you Coh people, Love, Friendship will last for a lifetime.
Global:@Greenflame Ratz
Main Toons:Super Ratz, Burning B Radical, Green Flame Avenger, Tunnel Ratz, Alex Magnus
Also, I don't see this being a problem to program. Possible display fonts would simply be listed in a drop-down menu on the last page of character creation. Each font could then append a tag (like [TNR] for Times New Roman) to the end of a character's name. It would be invisible for everything except for things like invites, and tells. Would it be kinda hideous? Well... it wouldn't be as bad as appending the global name to everyone's character name.
But, it would yield lovely things like: /invite Awesome Man[TRN], /invite Awesome Man[BOA], etc. And then you have Awesome Man[COM] being mad because you accidentally invited the wrong Awesome Man.
All and all, I still say stick with the thesaurus and just come up with better names.

I will go with that latter choice (without the acid and bile though that seems to come part and parcel with everything you say).
This idea won't fix that. The kind of impatient uncreative person that does that is not going to care what the name looks like, and prolly won't bother with this new system. Or, worse, we will end up with 4wesom3 Mann- AND 4wesom3 Mann-.
If the name you initially want is taken, then you have to come up with an alternative. That is an increase in difficulty, even though some may find it inconsequential. If the alternative is taken, then yet another alternative must be looked for, which is a further increase. The more characters that are created, the more likely it is that an initial name and alternatives will already be taken, and thus, naturally, it has become increasingly difficult to get a desired name for a character.

The largest of english dictionaries has 400,000 entries and that's not including things like informal and formal names, verb tenses, prefixes, suffixes, compound words, etc all of which send the possible variations skyrocketing into the millions. And that's just one language. It's not taking other languages into consideration. Anyone claiming that the game is running out of names has no idea what they are talking about.

Still, it only really bothers me when I do what you just (sort of) did and design a character around a particular name, only to find that the name is taken. And unfortunately the name-checking feature in the game doesn't work for me most of the time, meaning that I won't know if the name is taken until I make the character and try to enter the game.

...Maybe because punctuation used in that way looks completely stupid?

I don't think the problem here is that there's not enough names, I think the problem is your standards are too high to accept alternatives that make this idea pointless.
Among other potential characters. And a potentially terrible (or at best extremely random) name for yet others. Point being that only a relatively small selection of those "400,000" words will be deemed appropriate for any given character, and of that small selection there are even fewer that may meet aesthetic demands not all of which may be immediately apparent. All it takes is a handful of people with similar naming ideas to muck up the process.
