I recently have acquired a problem with coh on my laptop. 2 days ago i played coh and after about 15-20 minutes of playing the game cut out and a solid black screen appear and it crashed on me. I do not have this problem with any othe applications on my computer. Coh is the only game i play on my laptop. I have a hp pavilion dv6 which came preinstalled with windows 7. I have never had this problem before and it has only recently happened. Does anyone have any possible explanations and remedies for this situation?

Download and run CoH Helper (right-click the file and Run as Administrator), then paste the output from the program into a new post here. It will give us system information and show your ingame settings to help troubleshoot.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

It is safe to download. Basically it's a tool that runs some Windows utilities and puts together a report of what's going on with your computer, what hardware and drivers you have, and other details that can assist some of our more tech-savvy forumites in hopefully how to fix your problem.

We wouldn't steer you wrong.

You should check HP to see if they have updated drivers for your video and audio - the date on the ones on your system are last July. Hopefully, they will have something more recent for you. I tried to check at HP for drivers, but HP gives me a message that too many items contain the words pavilion DV6 ... is there a more specific model number or description for your computer? Like "dv6-1210ee" or "dv6-3001ax"?

The only possible place to get drivers will be at HP - I checked ATI and they direct you to the manufacturer.

Unfortunately, it's hard to tell - one of the first things that people generally recommend is get all the drivers updated and the OS updated (critical updates in particular). If you get them updated and the problem remains, we can go from there.

Let us know how you make out.

I updated my drivers and im going to also see if windows 7-64 bit has an update as well...I just tried to see if these updates helped but they didnt
I still crashed right after playing for about 5 minutes...its really frustrating..I have however noticed that a number of other people are also having this same problem so maybe its coh and not me.. idk i just want to play the game haha

At some point, if the updates do not help with your problem, you should probably contact NCSoft Tech support. They will make you jump through some hoops (that's standard with virtually any tech support), but hopefully might have some ideas for you to try that might make a difference. At the very least, having more data may help them to identify where the issue is if it is in their code.

Good luck.

I have the same problem. Random crashes, lockups, and bluescreens, only on CoH and Steam apps. Everything else runs fine. I'm stumped. Here's my CoH Helper file. I humbly beg assistance.

tommy_troy, your video drivers are out of date. go to the manufacturers website( the video card makers) and download the latest drivers.

voltea, same with you. go to the manufacturers website and make sure you have the most recent video drivers. you might want to also get a cooling pad to put your laptop on as the confined space that all the electronics are in makes it run very hot.

Still crashing with newest video drivers.

Posted

It might be your sound drivers. The GTX 470 definitely can handle City in Ultra mode.

Oh, I see a possible issue. Ambient Occlusion and Anti-aliasing do not play well together. Turn one or the other off.

Posted

OK turning AO off and checking for Creative Labs driver updates.

Posted

Man, I think I fixed it.

The AO/AA combo was not a problem because I don't have an ATI graphics card, but the suggestion to check for sound driver updates led me to this: my motherboard and sound card are notoriously incompatible.

My mobo is an EVGA nVidia 790i that is SLI-capable. My sound card is a Creative Labs PCI Express X-Fi Titanium Fatali1y Pro. If you have that combination and have been experiencing instability in CoX and Steam games in general, do a search for (790i and Fatal1ty) and read up on the longstanding problems when the two are used in combination.

It turns out that Creative released new drivers for this soundcard series on 7-7-2010. In the readme file, under "known issues," the docs refer to sound stuttering experienced with some hardware combinations and highly-demanding 3D graphic applications. My bluescreen crashes have generally been accompanied by a loud, continuous noise, indicating to me that the sound card/mobo conflict could be the source of my crashing.

Creative has a hotfix that requires applying a registry patch. There's a link to the hotfix in the "known issues" section of the new sound driver docs. I've been working on this issue for almost a year so I tried it - and it seems to have worked. Not a single crash on coh today despite having played over four hours straight. I'll give it a few days and report back, but I think I found the magic bullet for my problems.

Thanks for the help and suggestions - now help me keep my fingers crossed for a few days!

Posted

I tested it all day today with no crashes. This was a definite fix. Whoever compiles the known fix stickies should add this one.

Hope this helps you guys figure out why it keeps crashing on me after 15 minutes...Thanks alot for the help!
it not ur drivers or ur comp cox has a compatibility issue with 64bit versions of windows xp/vista/and windows 7/most flash players and java r just now beginning to catch up/ i suggest second partition or hard drive with 32bit version of windows on it or other comp that alrdy has 32bit version of windows
dc universe online comes out november by the way lol 64bit ready

Posted

I don't know where Jeto got his/her information. But CoX should be fully compatible with 64-bit Windows. The issue usually stems from OpenGL drivers not being up-to-date.

Posted

My city of heroes is lagging really bad. If i gave someone my game setup info could one of you guys help me make it run faster please?

Posted

Sorry Jeto, I run 64bit on 2 of the 3 computers here and they've never had an issue with CoH ever.

Must admit, I really hate people posting incorrect info on the tech boards. I run CoH on a desktop running Win7-64 and on a laptop running Win7-64 and I have experienced no problems whatsoever with either of them.
