A puzzle for the tech gurus: What if I can't update my driver?

No, it's nothing as simple as "I can't download the right file from nvidia.com" I'm afraid.

Now, I don't know for sure that it's what's causing my current sluggish performance with I17, but it's easily possible that I just don't have a driver that's up to date enough. I'm currently using an nVidia 7900 GS (AGP) with the official 175.19 drivers, which are obviously a bit old.

Just one problem: Updating to any nVidia driver past the one I already have outright breaks DirectX. I get all sorts of fun missing polygons and torn textures, even within the nVidia control panel's preview window. Of course, that matters little to CoH, which uses OpenGL...but a good 90% of my game library uses DirectX. As far as I know, this a critical compatibility flaw straight from nVidia themselves.

So am I completely sunk here? Are there any newer nVidia drivers or 3rd party drivers that are confirmed to work with AGP? Is there some way to hack something together that'll give me a fresher OpenGL driver without changing my DirectX one?

Not sure if this is useful, but I'm using a 7600GS OC AGP and have had no issues updating to the new 197.45 drivers and Fallout 3 as well as Resident Evil 5 have been running fine. Well as fine as my steampowered computer can run them. The preview image in the control panel looks fine as well doing its slow spin.

I'm actually pretty stoked I have been able to turn up some of the new settings, just can't go near the occlusion settings as that bogs me down hard. I updated just before my last play session and it actually netted me about an extra 8fps on the same settings.

I really know nothing about gfxcards though, but if mine is working shouldn't yours?

I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you, but my problem is similar to yours and was hoping to piggyback on your discussion for an answer.

I can't seem to update my archaic video driver either: nVidia Geforce FX Go5200, v. 66.10. It's a Dell special for laptops through nVidia and I have tried to download an update, but I either have the most updated driver or it just doesn't want to update it.

My game play has been experiencing lag for a few months now and it's become more frustrating than fun to play. Now with I17 released, it'll get worse.

Does anybody have any "cures" for my condition. I'm not very tech savvy (I know enough to be dangerous). So laments terms would be ideal.

I have the 7900GS agp card and had no problem d/l the 197.45 driver. (I always remove all traces of the old while in safe mode, using a driver cleaner...then install the new one.) My game looks awesome, even though I can't crank up every UM item. From what I have seen here on the forums, my old puter works a lot better than some newer rigs. I have WinXP-SP3...I keep the background programs to needed stuff only, keep temp files empty, defrag often and don't run my anti-virus program ONLY when playing CoH. (Trend Micro) According to the Nvidia site, the 197.45 driver is the one to use on the 7900GS card. Have you tried re-downloading the latest DirectX ? Hang in there and you will solve your problem. Suddenly...the new drivers work! I believe it's because I completely wiped the old drivers this time, but I could've sworn I've done that in the past at least once without success, but whatever! (There wasn't really anything to re-install with DirectX due to already having the newest version, but it couldn't have hurt.)

Ooooooooooookay. So it looked like it was working, but apparently it actually wasn't, as noted by trying to play Mass Effect and getting those gorram graphical corruptions again. Spectacular.

CoH ran fine, but that's not much solace at the moment.

Ian, what do your Nvidia control panel settings look like? I know in CoH the Geometry Buffers setting can sometimes make a diff. Could you post you cpl settings? The last time I saw those 'kaliedascope' fractals in games, my card was dying. How are your fans functioning?

Check for dust also. Especially those cards which have a cage around the fan.

The Geometry Buffers are in the game, and sometimes can cause fractels if enabled/disabled. If you don't have SP3, I'd get it. My 7900GS has been quite a workhorse, and I am very happy with it. (Good thing, too since I sure can't afford a new gaming system at this time LOL.)

If you are having DirectX problems, have you updated DirectX? This is separate from the video card drivers.

Actually the some 7900 are known to have memory problem. bad chip or something which would cause the graphic bugs you are getting. I know mine did and I was able to get an RMA from it.

I know this might not be useful since you probably can't easily replace the card with another one. But it's something to keep in mind.

You could check with the card manufacturer to see if they do RMA on those card. I know EVGA has a lifetime warranty and when I sent mine back in 2 years ago they sent me back a 8800gt instead sine they were out of 7900.

Again, keep that in mind for last resort, try everything else before.

Well, with MS recommending back-ups and all sorts of precautions, I didn't want to just jump into it. It's on my to-do list for sure, though.

Microsoft recommends backups for everything. It's a CYA line. If they didn't recommend it and something outside of their control happened that caused a problem they'd be blamed for not warning people to backup first.

Those same precautions they recommend are for the same reason.

I've been upgrading computers in my district left and right with SP3 and it's well over the "less than 100 XP boxes" that bill mentioned in his post. Heck, I've upgraded over 100 just on the High School campus alone. Some of these are some really old systems that I'm just waiting for budget money and replacement cycles to be able to get rid of.

Either way, SP3 installed, as well as a large number of other Windows updates I was behind on.

Predictably, this did nothing to actually fix my driver issue. Considering this has been happening since before SP3 existed, IIRC...

The 7950 looks promising, especially if it breathes life into an older system like mine. (Sure a lot leass expensive than a new computer that I can't afford anyway LOL.)
