When I start the game it keeps crashing and I get this message:

"City of Heroes has encountered a problem and needs to close. The crash occurred in ig4dev32.dll"

Any suggestions?

Intel Integrated Graphics. Launch the game in safe mode. Then go bug Intel for a driver update: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=219421

I don't even see how this is a viable solution. My roommate just bought the game last week having tested to ensure it worked on her laptop. Now a few days later she can't play at all. Updating the drivers doesn't seem a likely solution either as the latest intel drivers direct her to instead install the OEM version provided with her toshiba laptop.

I am having exactly the same problem -some dev feedback or help would be necessary. This dates from the patch - I found the same problem - crash, error and all - on test with the I17 update - sent error reports to no avail. I don't want to pay for a game I can't use -and that I have been using for 41 months on this computer - so please devs, lend a hand.

Ah, got to love new issues, all the awesome updates, especially crashing while loading onto the log in screen/form!

Yea, I'm having the same problem, I'll throw out my specs I suppose....win 7 64 bit, SLI (2x) 9800 GT nvidia gfxcards. Most up to date stable-released drivers from nvidia installed. Was working 100% yesterday. Only possible way I am able to log-in is checking the safe mode box in the updater (bottom right on the EULA page). Although if I change my gfx/resolution in game while in safe mode, log out (because it said I needed to for resolution changes and such to take affect...), start the updater, then just when a glimmer of hope appears, "City of heroes has encountered an error" 100% of the time i load coh normally this happens, like i said only possible way is safe mode....

So once again, I17 has some pretty nice updates compared to past issues....crash on start-up is a pretty awesome content update :s

Actually my roommate and I just had a spot of luck; we were able to find a slightly newer (2008) Intel driver provided by Toshiba for her model of laptop. It seems to have done the trick, no more crashing while trying to load up CoH.

I hope everyone else has as much luck.

HHmmmm,

My problem is a little different. I was able to log in just fine. I went into "Ultra" mode. I was laggy and had to log out. When i came back to CoH I was NOT able to get it to load up. It would start the loading screen than POOF gone. UGGGG!

So much for this ULTRA stuff.

I'm having problems as well. I can't get to the log-in screen before it crashes, and I get the same error that others have, with ig4dev32.dll. Even trying the game in safe mode doesn't work for me. I searched all day but Sony has no updated drivers for my Vaio since 2007!! I've put in my report to NCSoft tech support. Hopefully we'll all get an answer soon.

Might have spoke too soon. She's able to load in, but has had now two crashed while fighting some Tsoo, upon which her client seems to crash and the screen goes black, and then white after a minute.

It might be related to knockback effects.

Definitely seems related to knockback, each crash seems to occur after being sent flying.

I'm also having issues logging in.

Logged in fine, turned my settings to Ultra, fined tuned them. Ran smooth and all beautiful. Logged out.

Now I can't log back in. Doesn't even take me to the login screen. I just get to stare at a semitransparent loading bar for the game on my desktop. Even when trying to load up in safe mode.

My specs:
Intel i7 920 @ 4.1GHz
EVGA GTX 295
6 GB RAM

Should work fine. It was before I logged out. T.T

Luna,

that is the same problem I have. I also tried to remove and reinstall CoH..that ended up as an EPIC FAIL.

Sigh...

I don't know how to fix it.

BOOOOoooo

I have had the same problem although it hasn't had anything to do with knockback effects. Yesterday, when I tried to run the zone events, CoH kept crashing on me after a few minutes with the screen going black and my monitor basically turning off. The computer was still running but I couldn't get my screen back up. No sound, nothing. Had to reboot. This happened several times in a row and I finally gave up on the zone events after 1.5 hours of messing around and turning down all of the graphics. Then, I log in today and select the low setting for Ultra mode and barely was logged in when it happened again. My toon could just be standing around doing nothing with no powers on and it's crashing like this. So I don't think it has anything to do with knockback effects. I think that's just a coincidence. What a huge downer though for the anniversary zone events and the launch of Issue 17 when you can't even play.

I have the same issue, everything was working fine yesterday. Now I download the new issue and can't even get to the login screen. All I get to is the "I accept", click that then the screen goes black and the crash box pops up saying "crash occured in ig4dev32.dll". I hope there's a fix tomorrow, must be a bug with the new graphics generator. Anybody hear of any fixes out there?

Well, oddly, I feel a little better knowing I'm not the only one dealing with the occasional 'black-screen-of-death' crash. Of course, I'd feel better yet if it never happened to any of us, but at least now I know it's not because of some idiot thing I alone did.

I'm having issues on one machine but I would strongly recommend everyone make sure your graphics drivers are current. I was current back in closed beta and found out last night that there were yet again new nvidia drivers.

total kick to the gut

This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.

To me it always says "Lost connection to mapserver" or "Lost connection to server" and it ALWAYS happens on Atlas Park.

I've got the new Nvidia driver for my graphics card and it still gave me the black screen crash. I logged in after updating the driver and after my toon loaded, it did the crash again within minutes. Safe mode doesn't work either...same crash problem.

i still have the 196.21 nvidia drivers and have not crashed once. try those drivers and if you still have a problem, it is not the video drivers. try a disc clean up and defrag.

I have the mobile intel 965 express chipset family and I checked all the driver updates and it's updated to the latest they will allow. Anyone figure out any fixes? I can't imagine what else to do other than wait for a new fix from coh. I'm going to email them as well to see their thoughts.

I'm still having this exact problem. When I boot the game I crash before I get to the log in and still get the "crash occured in ig4dev32.dll" message. Surely there has been a fix to this problem by this point?

The problems seem to be on the players end of things. Some people are having problems while others aren't.

My own system isn't up to spec but I've only experienced occasional rubberbanding when I choose to play on Virtue.

I hope you guys get your issues straightened out quickly so you can continue to enjoy the game.

also, if you haven't done so already I would open a ticket with their support. if multiple people are having the same issue, they may have solutions to try.
