Bayani's Gallery Updates

I've got a couple of detailed commissions in the works so I haven't had much to post to my dA Gallery lately aside from quick sketches for winners of Fury Flechette's contest on Virtue and some other pieces of art I received in turn for donating to various charities.

I have a few thumbnail/layout sketches posted to scraps that hint at some of the art to be featured in the upcoming ashcan comic book that I'm pulling together, Bayani: One Shot. One is an illustration in the works by Lan Medina (Fables, Foolkiller, Deathlok) which will tie in with the short story I wrote "Heritage". The other is a big two page action splash of Bayani and a few other heroes battling Crey, drawn by Shaun O'Neill. After some setbacks regarding flakey inkers, the Kim Paler/Bayani cover to the as of yet unwritten short story "Webs We Weave" is back on track and should be done soonish, with paints by Vrykon. Last but not least is a quick color commission of Bayani done by Udon Comics superstar and fellow Pinoy, Jeffrey Cruz on behalf of the late great cartoonist Pat Carlucci. It's probably the most fav'd piece of Bayani art on dA, with over 330+ favs and counting, so "neener".

Hey that just so happens to be my favorite kind of berry.

I am really liking that shot of Heritage man. The Dojo/high-tech computer room (I am guessing those are wall mounted monitors but I suppose they could be paintings or diplomas or something else) would make for an awesome man-cave.

I will settle this. ORANGE FTW! - Ex Libris

Yep. Monitors. Bayani doesn't have extremely high level equipment really; at least not on par with a certain caped crusader with far too much money. Mostly to monitor news feeds and security cameras placed around various construction sites.

Thanks for the comments, folks.

I'm really diggin that piece with, Kim Paler is it? That's probably one of your best pieces I've seen. The rendering is just fantastic. Love the attitude as well. Is this all there is, or is there gonna be color added later?

Well, it was extremely unrefined when I finally got the piece back. If you look at the original: http://angbayani.deviantart.com/art/...eave-140551720 you can see that there were alot of pieces that were over-simplified or just unfinished. (Like Kim Paler's armor, the spider-arms, the robots) That's just the original artist's style, I think. Stjepan is a digital painter so he just lays things out in pencil roughs before he paints over the lines.

I originally hired two inkers to basically finish the piece and get it ready for coloring but after waiting for about... 12 weeks for each artist, neither one started. I couldn't wait much longer so I decided to go with Vrykon to basically paint the piece. He's been working on refining the linework before he actually adds the colors. It's been neat working the latest crop of artists I networked into meeting; they're all aware that their work is going into the ashcan comic I'm putting together and noticed the other pieces going into it, so they've been hellbent on outdoing each other. >.>

They're all very nice. The heritage piece is great. Disappointing to see Bayani's martial arts wall occupied by Japanese swords, Okinawan looking kama, and a wing chun dummy in the foreground though.

Well..Mr. Medina actually took time to read Bayani's biography on virtueverse and took note of the following statement... "Under his father and Red's tutelage, Bayani has developed into an expert in hand-to-hand combat. Bayani's unique and highly adaptive system of martial arts draws a wealth of techniques from several different fighting styles including Escrima, Kobudō, Iaidō, Wing Chun, and Karate."

Yeah, still disappointing to see rich and exotic native traditions passed over in favor of more or less generic martial arts iconography, but whatever floats Bayani's martial arts boat. I'm certainly not knocking Mr. Medina's work.

*shrugs* It's a workshop, not a "Pinoy Cave" or the "Fortress of Filipinoness". Not everything he does or has needs to scream tradition.

Inks on this are mostly done, though I'm not quite happy with the way Bayani's face looks in the image. Not quite sure how to remedy that though.

Ah, never mind. I see what's left of his glasses now...

Perhaps the eyebrows? At the moment he has an annoyed look, likely from the breakage of his shades. But would raised eyebrows, say something between an "Oh #### that was close!" look and a "Huh, will you look at that." be more appropriate?

Remember that one scene in Spider-Man where Peter gets in fight with the jock in the hallway, and they go into that slo-mo view of Peter watching the punch go by?

Nice inks ... looks very profesionnal. As for Bayani's face ... I am assuming you want both characters to be "agressors" in this piece. If that is the case then Bayani does look more on the "receiving end". The eyes/brow seem OK, it is more the mouth (maybe jaw) that lack "determination". If that comment helps in any way.

Now I say that because you mentionned it lacked something ... but I think it looks great.
