Looking back and missing the old days...
Keep your nostalgia away from me! I resist you!
The "old days" you say? I remember...
West Coast server crashes (yup, that means Protector)
Cascades of blind PL requests throughout PI
Lag spikes that made bunnies cry
Spending an hour and a half editing my SG base, only to get booted out before I finished
I'm happy with where the game sits today, when one looks back on old times, one tends to only see the good, but in truth CoH's evolution has given us far more than has been "taken away" or "nerfed". As you are such a fan of PvP, I find it ironic that you mourn "nerfs" that were introduced to CoH for the sake of PvP. Based on the observations of others, I understand PvP is not so grand these days, and for those who enjoy it that is a shame. Nevertheless, changes like ED and a long list of power tweaks came along to facilitate PvP capability within a game not originally designed with it in mind.
CoH is more stable, runs faster, and looks better than it ever has before. With the coming of Issue 17 and Going Rogue, the future holds more promise than ever. I've been here longer than Perigrine Island and, through it all, I think the best days are still ahead of us.
One thing i miss most about old CoH, the people. There was a time when this game had a pretty big population (no not like WoW, but still decent). Lots have things have been changed over there years some good some not so good. I like to remember the good times, like Ice said they weren't all good.
Actually, no, I don't miss the "old days."
I have a different play style and set of expectations. For me it is more heroic to struggle in fighting a smaller number of foes, so I really like lower level play.
Once a toon gets past 30-35, generally the game starts to head into what to me is "OP mode," where a player often expects to handle a room full of foes at a time.
I was always more of a Batman fan than a Superman fan.
If by "good old days" you mean the days when you ran missions by having the team stand by the door while the tank herded the map...... nope. Don't miss that a bit.
The one thing I really miss is the old Hami raids, simply because (And, remember, this is an opinion ) I feel we kinda got ramrodded into a "fix" for something that wasn't "broken". We were never really asked, it was just "We're changing this, deal with it."
I know there was griefing (Guess what...there still is !) but it was a social event where even if you weren't the best and brightest at your AT, you could almost always find a team, and broadcast was filled with banter and jokes. Now, the margin for error is so ridiculously slim that instead of a fun gathering, it's a surgical process that often sets tempers on edge. And let's face it...guaranteed death is just plain dumb to design into fight. (Yes, good teams/leaders minimize it, but when part of the planning is "The rezzer needs to leave in time to TP the dead", I feel it's fair to call it guaranteed.)
Lag can't be a real "defense" here. I have the same (if not more) lag when trying a Raid the Rikti run, and from the talk during the fighting, I'm not the only one. Yet I've heard no talk of changing how the mothership works. I have yet to understand why the "Hami Classic" was changed, although many people whose opinion I respect have tried to enlighten me.
Beyond that "pet peeve", I'll weigh in with Ice here. After just over 54 months, I feel the game as a whole runs smoother, and that as the consumer, I'm being offered more meaningful content by the Devs, with promise of player-fueled changes on the horizon.
i was normal before i started playing this game so i kinda miss that
I think you have to remember that death in this game, once you reach max level, isn't like death in other games.
I think the reason why the devs don't care if people die, is because there is no penalty for it.
I have two problems with the Hami fight. One is that it's just the same thing four times in a row. Yeah, it's easier to balance, but it's also bor~ring. The second part is that you can easily fail it if you run out of EoEs. I can't think of another MMO that lets you fail a Raid Boss. Wipe and be forced to start over (that is, start over a fight that only lasts 30 minutes tops)? Sure, but Hamidon doesn't even give you that option. If you run out of EoEs, you have to wait for him to despawn and then spawn him again, which you will never get a large enough group of people to do.
Here's a question, why do we even have EoEs? Why can't Hamidon just do a more reasonable amount of specialized damage and call it even?
I've never been one to care about the past, I just look at how things are now.
The old Hamidon raid was fallible too. Why? Hami-Os aren't that good. (53 Merits aren't that good either, but that's an entirely separate argument.)

Ironically, I was having a discussion with the PERC 2nd Chair about how our game is now, and how it was in the past. One thing I brought up was the pets, I missed my army of imps on Healing Phoenix; to me that was just about being a controller. We started discussing "What Ifs?" Like, What if they didn't do a complete nerf to the pets, only allowed them to stay around, but you could have as many spawns as you liked? Think of how many imps you could have. LOL!!! Or if they didn't change it at all, and with IOs, the spawns!
I do miss being able to HOLD groups and bosses without having to keep casting the power on them. I won't say I never liked being PLed by the mass farming with ice/fire tankers and ninjas, I won't say I don't miss it, because in my reality we where gods in those days. A tanker was a tanker, they were "Superman". Now we're just above super powered citizens with anger issues.
I don't miss having -ACC while flying... And then eventually everyone's powerset did -ACC while turned on, and then they just did travel suppression. haha.
I don't miss hover's ridiculous, slower than walk speed.
I do miss the population Protector had, even though it was still considered small in those days.
Above all, I can say I miss the friends I first had when I started the game. They decided to leave the game to pursue other games or real life issues.
Sigh, now I'm sad....

Well you don't have to get the EoEs in the Hive or the Abyss, you can get them on the monster islands (the one in PI and you can take a sub to the on red side in GV) Its more like most people don't bother to go there and get them before a raid and so everyone just ends up killing the giant monsters in those zones.

And that's the point, it's a needless headache. The damage is specialized so that all armor pools, whether stone or electric, are on the same playing field. Why does there have to be a second contingency that separates high priority characters over low ones? The fight is already centralized around specific roles.
Edit: And I don't mean to argue directly at you over it, it's just always seemed pointless to me. And worst of all, when they changed the fight, they deliberately left that mechanic.
What I miss most is Phase Shift. That allowed me to explore to my hearts content & not have to fight lol.
Otherwise, there really isn't much more I miss - just the players that have moved on from this game & I wish would come back, if only for a short visit .

To be honest no not really. Look at the improvements we now sort of take for granted...
OLD DAYS .. I ran everywhere until level 14 because there was no such thing as a Raptor Pack and since there also was no such thing as radio mission I was at the mercy of my contact. Said contact were, in my opinion, somewhat sadistic since it seemed like not one mission they gave ever took place in the same zone they were standing in. I spent more time running back and forth and using the train than I did actually running missions. A classic example.. Look at the Positron TF which back then was ONLY available (for XP) between level 10-15. I did one the other day and we hit Skyway (3-4 time) Perez, Galaxy, Atlas Park, Kings Row oh yeah and aside from running back to TALK TO Positron ther was actually 1 whole mission that took place in Steel Canyon. Now remember we are talking 10-15 level running this for the most part so almost no one had any travel power unless thery took hover.. and I can RUN faster than that. So where does Posi send us again and again? To Skyway where there are 19 level villains lurking about perfectly happy to sepreate our heads from our shoulders.
TODAY.. By Level 6 or 7 almost everyone has a Raptor Pack and if you don't want to run all over Paragon City.. sit right in Kings Row and do radio missions till level 14 when you have that permanent travel power. Heck now with Ninja Run I barely even use the raptor pack since that's even faster that flying.
OLD DAYS .. everyone relied heavily on the contacts they had and I can still recall getting to level 19 with my Regen Scrapper and finding myself completely out of missions from all five. I had new contacts in Talos and IP but was still 5 bars short of any of them talking to me. I had to street hunt and run door mission in PvP to get to 20 so I could start all over again. Heck I even recall somewhere in the 30s finishing off one contact's missions and then after starting another realizing "These are the exact same missions I just did for So-and So?" Much more content now giving players a lot more options on ways to level their characters
OLD DAYS.. I had friend that were serious badgers and they actually went out and got themselves killed constantly to stay at the debt cap so they wouldn't out level a contact before he or she FINALLY gave up the badge mission.
TODAY... I like badges too but rather than grind though a ton of misc missions and a story arc trying to coax a badge I want out of a contact I play how I want and what I want and simply use the Ouro Portal to run Time Travel mission and pick up any badge I may miss along the way.
OLD DAYS .. at level 35 I had a choice to make do I want to earn influence that I desperately need to buy the SOs that allow me to survive or do I want to help the Super Group I HELPED create and stay in SG mode so I keep earning prestige
TODAY.. between the Market (selling IO salvage, recipes, and enhancemenst), Reward Merits, and even AE tickets By the time I have a character in its teens they all usually have millions in influence and I never leave SG mode on any character all the way to level 50. best part is while I may not earn as much at least I still make 50% of the influence I'd make if I left SG mode.
I could go on but you get the point. Sure I miss some things .. i almost cried when the nerfed Regen. I can still recall entering a mission and while the rest of the team battled and took out one room I would wander off and take out another by myself. HEALER? I DON'T NEED NO HEALER.. I HEAL MYSELF! LOL The game has changes and the GOOD changes far out weigh the BAD.. Hey between my Ouro Portal, access to the RWZ, and the Midnight's Club I can get to a bunch of zones without ever touching a train or even going through my own base.
Biggest thing I miss from back then is old friends that have since moved on. Other than that.. I am quite happy with the NEW DAYS. :-D
Were always the good guys. In D&D, were lawful good. In City of Heroes were the heroes. In Grand Theft Auto we pay the prostitutes promptly and never hit them with a bat. Leonard

I think it'd be great if the Devs offered some kind of flash back through Oro to the old school Hami Raid. I'm sure they must still have the code somewhere. I think it'd be great if they reactivated the code for it during a free weekend activation - old friends come back for some old school buttkicking... it'd be awesome.
Some Hami O's aren't great, but others are more than worth the effort it takes to get one. I'd never get rid of the ones I have on my rads or my empath.

Or any of the new contacts who give non-stop repeatable missions. Sure, I rarely use them, but if I need just one mission to ding or something.... they're there.

The only thing I really miss is old friends - Zem and Ruby, DA and Kitten, Mas and Pyra, Strif, CD... damn... we had fun.
Lol at your first reply river. I like the hammi idea. Despite us being overpowered pre-ED, I remember a mission that put our powers to a test. It was myself(realest) with my kinetics and 3-4 phantasms, SWA with his unbeatable tank, riverdancer I believe you were on your empath, and thirsty was on I think his peacebringer which had perma light form back then. It was our first encounter with the shadow crystals. Regardless of how over powered we thought we were, we kept getting murdered over and over again. We eventully won, but it was challenging missions like that which I miss. People were complaining they were too hard so of course they were nerfed.

I miss the feeling I used to get when I would log into Atlas Park, the theme would be playing and I was still new to the game. I would get chills every time. Not so much anymore, just done it too many times...
I remember the first "old" Hami raid that I went to. On my lvl 45 emp. All the "big" names were there. I felt a little star-struck...
I guess, in the end, that I just miss the New feeling that I used to get. The excitement of doing a TF or seeing the Shadow Shard for the first time. The first friends that I made on the game (who are no longer playing) or the first SG that I joined and the tight friendship that came of it. I just want those feelings back...
I don't mind the changes to the game, whether good or bad, evolution is always a constant. I just miss the feelings for the game that I used to have.
i dont mind how the hami raids reqiure a lot of planning or strategy, it supposed to be challenging
however, there are plenty of things that bug me about it:
the time required for a terrible reward (1 HO is NOT worth 3+ hour raid, 53 merits is more worthwhile, but still not that worth it because the actual challenge is so difficult)
the limitation on how many poeple in the zone, 50 poeple is barely 4 teams, the hami zone should allow at LEAST 100 poeple (so no more locking poeple out)
i would be much more inclined to actually do hami raids if they gave better rewards and/or a badge for defeating hamidon
If by "Good ole days" you mean:
Running Frost-fire ad nauseam becuase there was not collaborative mission options.
Low level charging higher level players to team because they happen to have the "Missing Forturne Teller" or other badge mission.
Being teleported without your premission.
Debt at level 5
No Tram to Founder's Falls
Steel Canyon being the only zone with both Yellow and Green Line Train stations.
No Zone events. (Zomibe or Rikti invasions)
Stores not listed on the mini-map.
Street sweeping because your contacts dried up and there were no radio missions, at that time.
I am going to say "Nope".
The game has come a long way; some of it good, some of it bad from when I first started. And yes I do miss the noelity of seeing a zone for the first time, the first time I truely took flight as a superhero. I think that there is so much now that we just sort of take for granted, that if we were presented with the game the way it was 5 or 6 years ago we would not subscribe.

Anyone here miss the old days of COH? Before the nerfs and before when you actually fealt like a SUPER hero. I miss my 3 phantasms on my controller. All the gatherings at portal corp to view the 10 monsters in the court stomping on the lowbies.
Hamidon's yellow death anyone? lol
