I currently have vista home 64 bit. If i upgraded to win 7 would i have to reinstall the game from scratch?

Probably not. You can run CoH from a thumb drive, I don't see why you'd need to reinstall it after upgrading operating systems. Just make sure when you upgrade to Win7 that you choose the advanced options and make sure that it doesn't format the hard drive before installing.

You should still be backing up all your personal files before such an upgrade anyway, so why not just copy the CoH folder to your backup source as well just in case?

Why would you? Unless you reformat when you install.

As long as its 64 bit Windows 7 it shouldn't be a problem. Windows 7 is closer to a Vista service pack than a different operating system. It adds a number of much needed improvements and tweaks, but essentially is the same operating system as Vista. Of course you should follow Westey's advice and back everything up first anyway.

Are you referring to the suggestion to back everything up?
If so, find a way to make it happen. Unless, of course, you're okay with losing EVERYTHING on your computer. OS upgrades aside, you should have back-ups anyway. With computers so omnipresent in our lives, it is no longer a question of *IF* you will suffer a hard drive failure or some other catastrophic data loss. It's only a question of *WHEN*. I've had a total hard drive failure TWICE so far.

That's all it is on the surface, yes. Even underneath, the tweaks aren't that huge, but they do make a huge difference. Windows 7 is what Vista should have been. Unfortunately, you can't get the major stability, compatibility, etc improvements without shelling out for the upgrade

Can you get $100 together?
If so, you can pick up an external hard drive, go grab dinner, see a movie, and still have some change left over. Then you can back up your documents, your COH folder (realizing, of course, that even if you DID have to reinstall, the only stuff you'd lose would be local - say, screenshots, saved costumes, etc. and not your characters or progress,) and when Win7 is done installing, you can use its (far nicer) backup program to back IT up as well.

Though, personally, I tend to go for a clean install over an in-place upgrade anyway. Far less trouble and generally better results (plus some needed housecleaning.)

This is what i usually do. i copy over all program and data files and installers that i want to the backup drive. Then i usually wipe the hard drive clean and install from scratch. Eliminates a lot of cruft and programs i didn't really need or use. It can also mean most of a day doing nothing but working on the PC. That and assorted house cleaning during some of the install processes, but organizing, winnowing and copying over files before the reinstall can take a lot of time. Don't forget to locate and copy the browser bookmarks/favorites/preference setting files. i lost those once a while back because i hadn't remembered that in many cases they're no longer stored in the browser's directory.

Simple steps.

  1. Copy the CoH install directory off the Vista install.
  2. Install Windows 7
  3. Download the CoH installer
  4. Start up the CoH installer and stop it as soon as it begins downloading.
  5. Copy the contents of the original Vista install of the game into that folder.
Done!

I got my win 7 installed and so far so good so please keep your fingers closed for me.

On the side i was wondering if anyone knows how to make a show desktop option in my tool bar. The other is how to make it so min 7 doesn't always prompt me to give permission for the game client to start(Heard there was some setting).

I think it's easy once you have a password to log on. At least one of the users needs to do this. Do something like 1234 or eieio or something. Once you do that, putting some secure on you, Win will let you ditch that crap.

Another question is whats the name of the email program win 7 uses and where can i find a link for it?

Unlike previous versions of Windows, it doesn't come with a built-in mail client anymore.

Windows Mail in 7 is really little more than a Hotmail interface now.

If you're looking for a stand-alone mail client, I'd recommend something like Mozilla Thunderbird.

*heh* i just got the boss to finally install that after he realized he'd lose Windows Mail when he upgraded to 7. He'd been putting off the upgrade for a while because it was inconvenient to set up a new mail client. i'm not a huge fan of Windows or Microsoft, but 7 is a definite improvement over Vista, and every time there's a problem i'm expected to fix it, so i generally encourage the lesser evil. Every iteration of Windows introduces new ways to obfuscate or bury important setting menus, but that's one of the uses of Google.
Thunderbird is pretty nice and the price is right.

I just got a new compy with Win7 on the 12th, so I can answer some of these questions.

Actually, it's already there. Look at the far right side of your task bar. After the clock, you'll see a vertical bar. That's the Show Desktop widget. Hover your mouse over it, and it will automatically show your desktop until you move your mouse. If you click on it, it'll work just like in older versions of Windows, and minimize all open windows, leaving your desktop visible.

Also, you can now ALT+TAB to your desktop. Even if you only have 1 window open. Pretty neat.

For that, you need to turn off the UAC.

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts. At the bottom of the list of stuff on the right side, where your pic is, you'll see a link to Change User Account Control settings. Click that. In the window that pops up, drag the slider all the way down to Never notify. Click OK, and close the User Accounts window.

You might have to reboot. I don't remember... I think you'll also need to delete the desktop shortcuts for anything with that ugly UAC shield icon on it, and remake them...

As was already stated, Win7 doesn't have a native e-mail client, just a fancy interface for LOLHotMail. As Hyperstrike said, go with Mozilla Thunderbird. If you used Outlook Express, Thunderbird will import your old e-mail from Outlook, if you did an upgrade. If you got a new computer, you'll need to have a way to network your old compy to your new one to import.

Yes. I will not deal with webmail unless I have no choice. I cannot stand the slow, clunky way most webmail sites are presented. I far prefer being able to get to my email, refer to past email, etc. whether or not I have a connection. (Thunderbird user here.) Plus some of my email gets large attachments - I'd rather just download it once instead of each and every time I go to that message.

Email app > any webmail for me. (And yes, I even use it to get Hotmail from the account I've had since before MS owned it, as well as my Gmail accounts.)

* Note, Windows Mail (or windows live mail or whatever the little app is called) is not tied to Hotmail - you can set up other email accounts with it and it'll work just fine.

That said, yeah, Thunderbird. (And Firefox, and Mozbackup to preserve the settings and back up email - makes moving to a new computer very nice.)

You can also just make a GOD MODE folder in Windows 7 (works in Vista, but crashes some 64-bit installs) for one easy list of all the settings. Best part - it runs off a pen drive as well

1. Create a new folder.
2. Rename the folder to
GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

(NOTE: that you can change the “GodMode” text, but the following period and code number are essential).

3. The folder icon will change — double click it to show the GodMode window
