FM/FA S/L cap????

Fiery-Enforcer

Hi guys

currently working on a fire/fire brute and im wondering what would be the best way to reach s/l cap without sacrificing too much.

He is level 40 and has both fire shield and tough but im only makin 53% with SO's.

I dont have mids currently otherwise i would try and draw up the build.

any advice is welcome

There is very little S/L resistance to be had through set bonuses. With the PvP +3% res IO and some other bonuses you might be able to hit 60% but getting all the way to 90% is an unreasonable goal. It would be easier to build for defense.

Yup...what Supernumiphone said is correct. You wont find much in the way of +Resistance as bonuses from Sets.

As a rule of thumb on resistance sets I work for +Rech, +HP and +Regen. Those three seem to help to make those sets the most survivable. Then I throw in other forms of mitigation to help lessen the defensive burden, Ragnarok chance for Knockdown, Darkest Night, etc....

Occasionally Ill strive for the defensive s/l softcap but thats only fun until I hit some thing that has -def and then I might as well have done something else. Others experiences may vary

Hope that helps

I have a fm/fa that I play regularly and I find that building for recharge and defense is more viable than resistance. Aside from the fact that such a build goal is unrealistic with the given selection of IOs, it would also be better to have a multilayered defense plan instead of relying heavily upon resistance.

Words to the wise aren't necessary- it's the stupid ones that need them.

"You're right...I forgot...being constantly at or the near the damage cap is a big turn off. Definitely not worth it."

It would be a lot more rewarding to go for defense over res, as far as set bonuses and extra mitigation goes.

Remember, you can get a res set to the soft cap, but you can't even get a defense set close to the res cap.

The regen and HP argument is a strong one so i would build those, but you don't have to limit just to that, i would go for a moderate increase in HP regen and defense, that way you'll be even more survivable =)

LOL, it would be hard to get Smashing/Lethal resistance of 7.5% from the entire IO system, which is the equivalent of what one Kinetic Combat grants through its 3.75% Smashing/Lethal defense.

Like others said, I'd build for recharge to bring Healing Flames up quicker, HP which is practically adding resistance to all damage types, and/or melee and S/L defense.

If you've teamed with other players that talk about S/L caps, perhaps they were talking about defense caps. It is possible to get a /FA brute to the S/L defense softcap, though I believe it gimps the toon. It's smarter to aim for around 32.5% defense, and then add some appreciable recharge, HP and recovery.

Or just go HP/regen.

With so many things you can do with IOs, the only thing you can't build for is resistance.

This is exactly what I'm doing on my WM/Dark Brute. 32.5% def is the magic number for me because it's one small purple away from the soft cap and it's also around the point where I'd have to start making build sacrifices I'm not comfortable with to take it much further. That much defense on a resistance set with a heal makes it damned tough.

yep i am transitioning my fire/fire/elec into an overall def build, without sacrificing really too much of the build. It just required getting things re-slotted differently. I still have a decent attack chain/toon with this build so it is not too gimp. Thats the whole key, not gimping your build too much.Waffling if i want weave or not.

And it is going to be expensive tho, selling a purple or two to redo the build. Or time consuming thru merits.

off the top of my head and not looking at the build, I think i was aiming about 25%+ s/l/melee def, with atleast 20 for aoe and fire/cold/energy. I am still toying with trying to get it closer to sm/l 30%, so a luck or two will get me close to soft def cap. Ranged defs were not good.

With that def level, i should get about a 50% reduction in incoming attacks/damage/slows, on top of my build which could hold its own for alot of stuff, just had some serious weakness against certain groups. Ranged will still be a weakness. My thoughts were this....That def would help offset some of the holes, if i got hit about 40-50% less of time in general. Less end drain, less slows less..... (carnies are pbaoe end drain). Just a lots less to deal with, then add in some global recharge for hf and consume, and + recovery and HP/regen.....

Another things i did in the transition, i picked up temp prot for 20% slow resist, and the winter gifts 20% slow resist.

General Qol improvement with layered def/resistance, that can be added to with insp for def on tough fights and AVs.

Tricky build with lots of options, that i am playing out as i build it, but it should be a really decent toon once it is done.

You need mids.

Yea,
With FM/FA you want to hit the Kinetic combats. Grab 5 sets. Get your major single target attacks 5 or 6 slot and use 4 slot kinetics there and round em out with crushing impacts or Makos. Remember you also have boxing and brawl you can 4 slot if your build does not have alot single target attacks, its well worth it. Get steadfast +3 def. Then use combo reactive armor, Taunt, PBAE IOs to round that S/L to the point were you are happy. Dont hurt yourself to much in the damage department. If you want to spend the billion plus you can get the Glad +3 def. You can grab Soul mastery for Dark obiliteration which will stack on nicely with the to hit debuff.

Once you get around 35 S/L def on a Resist/heal set like FA you will be extremely solid. I like layered toons with good def, good Resists and solid healing better the extreme Defense or resist or regen builds.

Best of luck
Cipher

Thanks for the feedback guys

looking around at io sets it is very clear that there is literally no io bonuses for resistance so with that being said i think ill begin to focus on defense and then regen.

my toon has reached level 50 now and ive been sort of mimicking a build posted on here (which i think was by Tonality in response to someone asking for a build) if i manage to find the thread again i will copy and paste it here

thanks again

hey,

looked at your build in mids, and am still looking at it. So i am not making any judgments.

What i am playing over, is using the dual build option, one for more defense and one for more offense. the only difference, will probably be level 50, where i basically toggle between weave and firey embrace;

Go look at the fire tanker post about Wall of fire, it is pretty good. I am redoing my fire tanker as well.

I will post my weave build for you to look at; i am sure someone has a better one.

I am still transitioning into the IOs, but i can tell a difference already with the temp prot/winters gift. Currently running about 22% s/l mel i think and about 27 aoe def. The difference is impressive. But i been running carnie missions (still with end problems some, but you should see the number of them i can fight with a luck or two. It is beyond impressive, what right insp with this build can do) COT and council are almost laughable, i take on two spawns, maxing agro caps, i am set for like +1 then x4)

What i am doing is this, i am doing the IO build (have most of now), and leaving the Num/miracle/kinetic combats till last. Getting the kinetic combats is going to be difficult.

when done with the IOs, i can basically soft cap to s/l and pretty close on melee and really good def on aoe with just one luck inspiration, and that is good enough for me. That leaves a ranged hole, but i am a melee character you know...lol

edit: mine used to be more frankenslotted, just like yours. i am sold a purple to finance this build, you can farm with what you got. Farm till a purple, then sell it, and redo if neede, then farm again for another purple.
The kinetic combats are going to be difficult to get or extremely expensive.

I tweaked your build a bit.

1) Kinetic Combat does not offer good accuracy, so you have to add an extra slot to help round out your accuracy. While it should be enough for most enemies at 0/?? difficulty, you will start missing when the difficulty goes up or you start fighting enemies with defense.

2) Reactive Armor is much more useful than aegis to your build. The amount of fire/cold damage redside is pretty limited, and you're already capped to fire resistance. Adding some S/L/E/N defense with 4 slots instead of F/C with 5 slots is a much more efficient approach.

3) I'd frankenslot consume to save slots for other powers. I'd also move an extra slot over to stamina to 4-slot it with performance shifter.

4) I added a kismet to combat jumping. That 6% To-hit really will help you.

5) A 3rd slot in weave will help you out. Take out Scirrocco from Burn, and use Eradication instead. You get +end, e/neg defense, and +HP. That 5th slot can go in weave for even more HP from a 3rd LOTG.
