Best server
Is there a server with active players?
Im online right now and i havent seen one player... Im playing on freedom. Is this the best choice for most active and populated server? Or is city of heroes dead? |
Here's how to solve your teaming problems on ANY server:
*Use your server's global channels. You can find them listed in the server sections here on the forum.
*Find and join an active SG. Same thing. Look here on the forum.
*When you team with other players that have compatible playstyles, add them to global friends.
*FORM YOUR OWN TEAMS!
That's it...
Out of those, 99% of my teams are formed off of nothing more than global channels and global friends.
ETA: Something to keep in mind. Nearly all missions in this game are instanced missions. There may appear to be no players around, simply because they are all inside missions.

Are you in the tutorial? Very few people are ever in there at any given time, on any server.
Did you choose Galaxy City, instead of Atlas Park? Galaxy City is more rarely used than Atlas Park.
Are you aware that it is morning, and either people are asleep, at work, or at school, most likely? You on at a very low population time.
Are you aware that this game takes place mostly in instances? Most of the game population isn't out in the world, but in missions, at any given time.

First of all, welcome to the game.
Second, the morning of a work/school day in the US is probably not the best time to judge server population activity.
Third, When you sign into the game you see a list of servers to choose from; the one at the top is the last server you were signed in on, from there the servers run from lowest load at the top to highest load at the bottom. Server load ╪ population, but it is a good guide to which servers probably have more players on them.
Freedom and Virtue are typically the most populated servers, so those are probably the "best" servers to find a team at any given time. However, I think the folks from Australia, New Zealand, ect. tend to play on a certain server (Justice?) so if you are looking for a team during business, or sleep, hours in the US, you might be better off looking on one where the Australasian or European players congregate.

Freedom at 8:48am? No wonder why it's dead. People have school/work at that time of day.

You may want to check out Justice, and see if there are a bunch of people there that play around your time. Or, at the least, see if there is a Global Channel on Freedom that caters to people who play around the time you are on.

thanks for all replies.
One more thing a bit off topic...
If i buy city of heroes/city of villains i get acess to both characters... but can villains go into heroes world ?
What about expansions... should i get architect and going rogue? ( not right now, but possible someday)
thanks for all replies.

With Going Rogue, this will change somewhat, but we're not exactly sure how it will happen, but it will apparently be a somewhat gradual process to change over. However, true Heroes still will not be able to go to the Rogue Island, and true Villains won't be able to go to Paragon City.
If you want to buy some of the other boxes, such as the Architect Edition, you can, but you will only get the goodies that come with them. Right now, you have the full game. None of the boxes out there will give you new areas, or anything like that. They will only give you little perks that you may or may not enjoy. But they don't change any of what you can do in the game.

At this time, no, heroes and villains cannot cross over. Villains are stuck in the Rogue Isles and heroes are limited to Paragon City. This should change in some way with Going Rogue.
If you're not on a restricted budget, I would suggest buying Architect, the Mac expansion, and Good vs. Evil (or is that what you already bought?) The Mac expansion, which you don't have to use a Mac to buy, comes with the Valkyrie costume expansion pack (wings and a cape at level 1), Architect comes with a "coupon" for one of the origin-based expansion packs (Tech or Magic I think) and GvE comes with a Pocket D teleporter and a vertical-jump rocket pack. Each also comes with a free month of game time, so they cost almost nothing once you factor in the free time and the free expansion packs.
If money is an object, and you can only buy one right now, I'd suggest GvE because I think its freebies are the most useful to new players. If you already bought that though, go for Architect - it's the best monetary value and if you're buying the boxed version, it has the most up-to-date software, so if you ever have to reinstall the game, it will take far less time to do so if you start wit the Architect disk.

Then please understand that you are playing at very off-peak times for most of the server. At 9 AM my time, I am at work. At the same time, it is 6 AM in California, and people are sitting in traffic. In the middle, there is probably a combination of the two.

2. Architect edition is not an expansion as much as a bonus pack. It grants full access to the current game, adds 1 free month to your account, and your choice of booster packs; Cyborg, or Magic. You do not need the Architect edition to access the mission architect building an it's functions.
3. Going Rogue, when it is released, will enable access to Praetoria, wherein there will be mission arcs that will allow characters to switch sides, should they wish to. This is an expansion, and will likely require purchase to unlock it's features. There are still many unknowns about how much of it will work. the devs have been rather tight lipped.

Might want to check out Victory. Before the EU Servers were established, many EU players congregated there and many still are there. They'll match your play times better.

2. You posted this at 8:50am Eastern, which is where the server is located (-5 GMT). Most people are at work, of if they're unemployed they're either at school or asleep.
3. As of 10:10am there are 212 unhidden players currently in the zones. As mentioned before, however, "zone" population isn't a good indicator of general population, because you lose the headcounts of /hidden players, and of people in instanced missions (which is where 95% of your content is).
You mention later that you're an international player; Freedom is probably your best bet in general, but you might be better served with US populations that have higher counts of EU players. Freedom HAS gotten quite a bit lately; I'd stop by the server forum and shout a heya to your Eurofriends and see who chimes in. Due to lack of population for the EU servers, and seeing those players migrate here, it would behoove us to have a global channel for those international players on the US servers to find each other for teaming and whatnot.
If you want to relocate to another server, I believe server transfers are still free until the end of the month.
Cheers, and enjoy your time on Freedom, or wherever you settle.

Im kind of confused right now.
I bought good vs evil and i started downloading the pc client . Is this the good vs evil client? Or is good vs evil just about the bonus pack and the game itself is included in the free pc client?
Following this logic when and if i buy architect i wont need to download anything but my account will have acess to the bonus items and will have the ability to make missions?
Am I right?
Freedom and Virtue are the highest load servers, and Justice is solidly in third place. Freedom is the catch all East coast server, and Virtue is known as the Role Play West coast server.
Justice is also the unofficial Australian server, so if your own hours match up with theirs then Justice has a decent population during the wee hours of North American time zones. Justice is a west coast server, like Virtue.
All the clients are identical in download, and pretty much everything you get is the same with the exception of minor bonus powers, emotes and costumes. It used to be different, and Going Rogue will probably be a pay expansion (for the foreseeable future).
You can make your own missions with any edition of CoH, since it was released in issue 14. All issue release are available to paying subscribers of CoX.
FREEDOM is the best serva evva!
That is all.
Carry on.

If and when you buy the architect version, the only thing that will change is that you will get a few more perks.
You can make missions now, with the version that you have. The Architect version of the game doesn't allow you to make them - you already can. It was just a new box, with some different goodies in it, to advertise the Mission Architect.

The base game, "City of Heroes", has heroes, villains, Architect, zones, costumes, flaming baboons, half-naked trapeze artists, and giant fascist robots, all available to every subscriber. The "version" you buy only determines some of the "fluff" you can add to your account. This Wiki page describes it, although it doesn't include "Architect" (and needs updating.. hmm..):
http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Upgrad...llains_Account
In terms of what version to buy? The best part of it is that you can buy the items "piecemeal" depending on taste. So, go for one major version that gets you the most of what you want, then add on the others as you want them.
For my money, I'd go with the Good Vs Evil edition for raw usefulness. You get one month of game time, but you also get a "jump jet" power that helps out at lower levels, and a "Pocket D" teleport power which isn't as handy as it used to be (Ouroboros portals kinda eke this out for general transport), but it's still nice to have.
As for the Architect version, this nets you one month of free gametime plus a choice of the Cyborg or Magic booster packs (Magic's my favorite, but you get a suicide nuke with Cyborg that's just hella awesome). However, either of these packs are purchasable after the fact.
Refer to this page for your purchasing options.

Turg and Aett pretty much covered it, but just to be extra clear, folks often buy specific game variants because they want extra goodies that are specific only to those editions. For example, when the Mac version of CoH came out I purchased it (even though I don't have a Mac!) because it came with the Valkyrie costume set and the Mission Teleport power. Typically when you buy any of the special editions they come with a month of free play, and thus $15 (the cost of a month) of the cost is offset.

If you're that much out of sync with US players, you might way to try a different server. Justice is the 'unofficial Australia / New Zealand' server and is active during their 'prime time'.

Rock! We have many EU members on the NA servers, and perhaps they will post in here as well. As for now, Freedom is the most populated of the NA servers, followed by Virtue. As such, Freedom has all the good and bad things that come with a high population magnified.
One of which being, more people on at traditionally low-population times. Could be just what you are looking for.
Have fun, and don't be afraid to ask questions.
