Can CoH run on a netbook?

Hey everyone. I was wondering if it was a good idea, or even possible, to run CoH on a netbook. The specific one I am interested in is the Acer Aspire One. All the stats can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acer_Aspire_One

I'm not looking for highly impressive graphics if I were to play on this netbook. I simply want it to be able to play the game without lagging. Has anyone had any experience playing on a netbook? Please post your opinions and the make/model of the netbook you used.

Yes, that could run CoH. I'd spring for the 2G RAM, but it's not a terrible computer.

You'll lag during thinks like Rikti invasions, but then so does everyone else. In normal gameplay you should be fine.

Short answer, poorly. The integrated Intel graphics found in most inexpensive netbooks are only able to run the game at minimal settings and not very fast even at those settings.

As for bumping the memory to 2GB, it appears that Microsoft tweaked the XP license and possibly the code so it doesn't recognize more than 1GB on a netbook. I believe this is not the case with a Vista or Windows 7 netbook.

However a netbook like the current version of the Lenovo Ideapad S12, which uses an nVidia ION chipset for graphics should be able to run the game better. However at the cost you may be better off looking at a real laptop. Also you aren't going to find these in warehouse and big box stores.

Heh, I have an Aspire One. Capabilities of the computing hardware aside, if I tried to play City of Heroes on it, I'd go blind from the eyestrain. It'd be like trying to reproduce the Bayeux Tapestry on the spine of a paperback book.

I used to play CoH on my laptop as much or more than I did on my desktop. I now have a new laptop, because my viddeo card literally melted parts of itself, as well as other heat-related issues. Most netbooks are even smaller than laptops, meaning that ther will be less room for heat to circulate and escape.

I suspect that you would NOT want to run a game on a system like that frequently or for long periods. Quick logins to check the market or such? Sure. Running more than a few missions at once? Probably shouldn't. Teaming or Task Forces? Bad idea.

I run very acceptably on low settings with a Gateway system with the Atom Processor, 3150 integrated gfx. That Acer would be fine for on the go gaming, though I'd recommend a USB keyboard if you intend to talk a lot.

Edited to add: Holy cow thread necromancy! Should looked at the year and not just the date. Point stands, CoH runs perfectly fine on a netbook.

I have an Acer Aspire One. It is not a netbook you would want to seriously play the game on. I use it to help out getting badges, trading stuff (before email attachments came in, or when I have a lot of stuff to move) and similar stuff, but I would not consider it acceptable for serious play.

My sons ATI based MSI Wind netbook plays CoH and even has some Ultra bits turned on.

I'm running the game on a Gateway Netbook w/ Atom N450 but view everything on an Acer 21" widescreen monitor instead of the on-board screen. It can run CoH on Medium graphics settings but CoV and Praetoria run best on Minimal settings. Off course, it helps that I have a fiber optic (FioS) connection to the net.

I''ve been online with this setup since mid-August for at least 8 hours every day and have had no problems doing whatever I wanted to do including joining the large teams for the Rikti invasion. Lag is about the same as when I had a higher end desktop system.

Except for not being able to experience the game world in Ultra mode and considering the costs involved, for now, I am satisfied with this setup.

Edited to include the following: 2gb ram and Windows 7.

I have run it successfully on a Gateway "ec1440u". But ... not for playing the game, really, just for logging in to check WW. It was not fast enough for me to try playing, I don't think. It might be viable, but it'd be a bit rough. Good enough for talking to people, though.

I have an ASUS eeePC with similar specs to the one being discussed in the OP (upgraded to 2 GB of ram though). It would run CoH, and as long as I wasn't in a busy outdoor area, the lag was tolerable with the graphics settings on minimum. The biggest issue for me though, was the screen resolution. Since the resolution is so small, the UI took up more than half the screen. I found that made it fairly unplayable.
