Windows xp pro 64 bit, or Windows 7?
Its not a bad OS, it just never had very good driver support, I'd honestly pick up Win 7 x64, it runs CoH just fine for me at least and most hardware works perfectly.
Is it the aero interface in 7 that you dont like, or something else?
Because you can switch that off completely if i remember right. Although that does make it look like windows 95.
Also Windows 7 Ultimate has both virtual pc and virtual xp pc options.
So you could run stuff in a native XP mode if required, which gets around most of the compatability issues with some programs on anything other than xp.
win xp pro 64 is not really a well supported version of the windows family. I'd go win7 instead.

If you do decide to go back to Windows XP-64, MAKE SURE all of your hardware (motherboard, network, modem, graphics card, sound card) has drivers available for it. I've run Windows XP-64 for a while now without issue, but I made sure that each component had drivers available before making the switch.

Ok, here is the skinny.
XP pro 64 is like XP in the fact that it is in extended support from microsoft. Add on that there has never been a great demand for it, well I would stay away from it.
I lvoed XP, but I have really been enjoying Windows 7. Yes there is a learning curve, but I have old programs running on it beautifully. If its the way the OS looks that bothers you, well, I would take some time to jsut get used to it, because in the near future its gonna be the only choice outside of going Mac or Linux.

Go with Windows 7. The learning curve's not that bad, and it's got so many useful features in it it's worth taking a few minutes TO learn - even some of those that might not seem useful at first (like the window "snap" to the various sides or top of the screen - REALLY handy on a widescreen monitor.)
Running win7 x64 here on a system that used to run XP. No slowdowns from the old system, everything was supported nicely - and I know it'll support dx10, 11, and several future revisions. Eventually you'll have to upgrade (or stop playing games.)
(Also, Coolio - it's not just ultimate, which really IMHO is a waste of money, but Pro handles it as well.)
Win 7 Business and Ultimate have Virtual PC and Virtual XP modes...
Other versions of Win 7 (Home Premium etc.) only have Virtual PC mode.
Virtual XP mode is basically windows xp pro run under Win 7.
(32 or 64 bit depending on the Windows 7 version obviously.)

I love Windows XP but it wont recognize all the memory I have, so I got windows 7.
Unfortunately I dont like windows 7. Im too used to XP and want to stick with that. So Im thinking of buying Windows XP Pro, 64 bit, so I can have all the memory and processing. My question is, if I get WinXP Pro 64 bit, will COH run great with it? Its expensive to buy so I want ot make sure before I buy. thanks |
That being said, I'd still probably recommend sticking with Win7 at this point. I've got it loaded on my machine at work and it's not terrifically painful.
Virtual XP does not support 3D or heavy graphics. Its not meant for running games.

Is that a fact? Man. I have a few old games that don't run right on vista... KoToR and KoToR2... was hoping if i got win7 i could run them on virtual xp... are you saying that wouldn't be a good idea?

Seriously, though, go for Win7. It's not that hard to figure out and there are some nagging annoyances but it's a solid OS for a Microsoft product.

I just installed Windows 7 Pro 64-bit this weekend.
It's... difficult... for me to say this, but... I actually like it better than Win XP.

XP Mode is being oversold, in my opinion. There are no games to my knowledge that don't work on Vista or 7, old or new; some things may need some tweaking, but nothing will out-and-out fail. Apart from Fahrenheit (or Indigo Prophecy if you're a yank), which is hardcoded to only install on XP; fixing that requires dumping the DVD to the hard drive and buggering up the installer. However, the game itself runs perfectly.
I can even run the geriatric Battlezone on Vista and 7, flawlessly. There has been nothing that I use which needed a dual-boot with XP.
XP Mode was never intended to fix any problems a home user would have. I can't emphasize this enough. The only reason it exists is because there are thousands of programs out there in use by businesses which don't work on Vista or 7. Usually, it's only because it doesn't recognise them as newer than XP, but nevertheless, they will still fail. Replacing the infrastructure of a business to support a new OS costs money, and there is every chance that the original developers have broken up, with no hope of a Vista/7 port. For these businesses, XP Mode allows them to run those essential programs without additional expenditure.

I can run KotOR just fine on Vista and Windows 7. Better than fine, in fact. If you need help with it, I can give you some pointers. Just be aware that if there's a game that doesn't immediately work on Vista/7, there is a workaround for it.
