Looking for suggestions to make the game interesting again.

Interesting... I used to do the same with games that didn't require direct player-to-player interaction. Like, say, playing Monopoly without trading anything. Chess doesn't quite work, because a lot of it relies on planning strategies the other player isn't aware of, which doesn't work with a single player. A lot of card games work just fine, though. And I wasn't an only child, but my older brother is 11 years older than me, so I might as well have been.

I learned one thing, though - basically anything that's turn-based and doesn't need players to communicate, either overtly or covertly, is perfectly playable by yourself.

As for an actual suggestion, let me first pick on this:

That depends on your standards. If you don't want to deal with Inventions and the Market, do what I do and lower your difficulty. It's not shameful. No, seriously, there is no shame to play against even con enemies.

And as for an ACTUAL actual suggestion, from where I stand, you have two options. As the Goat suggested, do something new, or try to rediscover something old. For me, this means switching characters. Don't reduce your characters to AT and powersets. Try to get a feel for them and try to either make a new one or rediscover an old one that feels right and go with that for a while. I'm not sure if that'll work for you, but the advice to just do something different stands.

Failing that, play another game. I'm actually serious here. Every time I get burned out a little more, I play something else. Usually some single-player game that I can clear in a couple of days. I usually use either the Half-Life 2 series or the Prince of Persia series. Right now I'm actually playing Torchlight, which I don't foresee holding me much longer than the end of tomorrow. Just get a change of pace, let the City of Heroes experience sink in a little bit, then try the game again and see if it feels better.

And that's about all I have.

There is tremendous variety within the AT's. The different defender sets are dramatically different from each other. Have you taken every defender set to 50? I'm working on it. I've taken empathy, dark, force fields, radiation and kinetics to 50. I have thermal at 40 currently. Still a ways to go to try them all.

Total nonsense. Lose this mindset and your options expand. Narrowminded (and wrong) thinking puts blinders on you.

Content, Content, Content!!

I've been saying this for ages about this game, even started a thread on the old EU forums about it, but nothing ever gets mentioned about it from the devs.

Now, don't get me wrong, the game has shedloads of content, it will do after 5 years, but, and here's the rub, it's the same thing over and over!!

I'm desperate for new mission types. After nearly 5 years of playing it, i'm sick to death of the same mission style over and over. What have we got?

Defeat All
Rescue Hostage/Capture Hostage
Click Glowie
Defeat Boss and group around him
Combinations of those above....

Seriously, this is a Superhero game, with not enough superhero styled missions, and the same goes for villains. There's not enough variety. There's a whole stack of comic book storylines that can be used for inspiration and we just get the same mission style over and over and over and over and over and over.....

Don't get me wrong, i understand, this is a game. There are limits on what can be done. You can't have every single mission be different, obviously, that would take more programming power than there is on the entire planet, probably :d but even just a handful of new mission types would add some much needed variety. Levelling up can become such a slog doing these things over and over. And before anyone mentions Taskforces, they are the same problem. Mostly the same mission types in a row before anything interesting at the final mission. Indeed, some of the newer ones are much more interesting, the Sky Raiders base TF on villains, Statesman TF final mission, these are what make the game fun, having to work out different tactics for how to defeat it with different AT types is amazing fun, but there's only a few of these and only so many times you can do it without getting bored of of it again.

Personally, I'm pinning my hopes on Going Rogue. I'm hoping all the new content will have a LOT on new interesting stuff to do, other than the same mission types with different text and graphics. I would LOVE to see about 50 new TF's, all with different things to do in them and not just 10 missions in a row followed by "all pile on the AV" (I'm looking at you, Positron TF!) I'd love to see some missions happen at random out on the street, I'd love to see us actually rescuing people from things like a burning car, a falling crane, etc, things like this. With the talent that seems to be at Paragon Studios now, I'm sure they can do something interesting to keep us occupied more.

Currently, I'm on an extended break until things improve and am using the chance to get my day job badges but I really really hope that GR has some different things to do than the same old in new clothes.

Personally, I wish they WON'T add more mission types. Last time people complained about it, we got new mission. And what did we get? Escorts, running bosses, destructible objective protection, simultaneous clicks. In other words, we got the most annoying, most reviled, most disruptive mission types the game currently has to offer. Frankly, if we had never gotten simu-clicks or running bosses, the game would have been a better place, as far as I'm concerned.

Then again, I'm biassed, because more of the same is exactly what I want.

Frankly, even ONE simu-click in the whole game is one too many. This kind of enforced teaming for purely stupid reasons is anathema, in my book. Annoying mission types I can sort of tolerate, but I'll tell you one thing - I've never entered a running boss mission and thought anything other than "Man, I hate these missions!" It's a change of pace, true, but I'm not confident a change for the worse is a good thing. But as long as they're very rare, I can deal.

I'd also like to add that I don't think that running bosses is bad in theory, but in practice it's just not particularily well executed. Maybe if it wasn't so much "run to the door, you lose" but more like the Rikti Communication Officers where it certainly makes it harder if they get off their power, but it doesn't make you fail.

Around the time of i13 or whatever issue it was, which gave Pain Domination to Masterminds, I was about to take an extended break from the game. I got pretty bored with the game, as you do eventually.

Then our small SG decided to all roll MM's just to try the new pools. Two of us took Paindom (with area heal on autofire), and we kitted the MM's to purely buff the pets.
It was the fastest run to lvl 50 I've ever done. No farming, difficulty on max. Enemies had no prayer, when our shooty pets mowed them down. And there were a LOT of mobs!
We were huddling together, multiple Maneuvers and Assaults, paindom boosts and heals. Basically enemies had to kill our pets with a single blow, or they immediately healed to full HP's.

It might sound a bit boring, but managing pets and trying to get endurance to last made it weirdly interesting. Completely different style of playing. It was also pretty hectic and the amount of action on screen was insane. And it was fun to curse the pets, as they decided to scamper after a running mob, didin't immediately respond to your heel commands, and succeeded in aggroing rooms full of mobs in the process.

After that MM run I've stayed in the game. We've found other weird team combos with our SG.

My point is finding a SG of like-minded players helps a lot.
The team dynamic is another dimension to the game. Try all rolling MM's, or melee-oriented AT's. Try playing without healers or fire/kins. Or try a team of all fire/kins.
And stick with it. A single mission or TF is fun and all, but sticking with the exact same group of heroes for lvl 1 to 50 is another thing.

I'd honestly take a fight against the clock over a fight with a running enemy. The game just isn't designed to allow you to fight on the move. Travel powers suppress, attacks root you in place for long periods and bosses take a severe beating before going down. I wouldn't mind it if the boss took breaks to shoot back, or ran away to a checkpoint with reinforcements or some such, but just running a fleeing enemy is no fun. Not in any game I've tried that didn't let me snipe people in the back of the head for a one hit kill.

But, really, running bosses remind me of the WORST design for an enemy in ANY game I've seen ever - the Succubus women in the original Diablo. They would shoot at range with rather powerful attacks and then run away when you approached them. They ran at the exact same speed you did, so catching them in a straight race was impossible and you could only melee them if you tricked the AI into jamming itself into a corner. And as soon as you stopped chasing, they resumed shooting at you. That's what a boss chase feels like - unfair in the extreme.

No, you're not. I usually craft common IOs for my characters, but with the explosion of salvage prices, I've taken to selling everything to fund SOs until they hit 50, and =then= flush them out with common IOs.

As to the original topic, I don't have an answer. The game has never lost its compelling interest for me.

Alternately, get together with some friends. Have THEM pick your AT and powersets. (You can do this "secret santa" style or have everyone vote on everyone else - AT first, then sets.) And you have to play that character.

Of course, they have to play THEIRS, too.

Yes, some friends of mine and I did this. Rather fun, though it's not on our main server, so we're not over there quite as much. The group's worked its way into the RPs as well. (I ended up nicely with a fire/kin Corruptor.)

1. the auto sk/lcky killed us i think majority of us play for fun just want to lvl fast try a build n move on why they nerfed ae after we havent seen numbers like that playing since forever ago i dont know because of the few crying over noobs not learning SO WHAT teach em

2. forum is flooded with ideas they barely ever use like they think they will get sued

3. maintenance aggro made lots leave

4. where is creative missions fighting near a spewing volcano,on clouds , in swamps, during thunder storm etc...

5. emotes of fishing but cant fish i would love to fish for insp,io's, badges , outfits, n fish that are a new salvage for crafting.

6. add bus stops that can take u to mission doors to eliminate the city to city run around just to talk

7. im rich on all toons but be nice to have an account that all my toons can share the wealth like have a real reason for banks n when u fail a bank job its your money that loses 10% lol

8. why does ww or bm have a charge for everything i didnt know the devs needed that money too lol get rid of that they want to have an itchy finger over the nerf button nerf that devs

9. 1 new power not recycled or reused for every release it will def. keep us busy trying something completely new kinda like crab spiders release we all had 1 or was getting a 50 to try it

10. make lots of new io's some that u can have as many of the same bonus as u can get only they break and work half way when broken like u only get the bonus of set of 2 instead of 6 if it breaks from too many battles and the bonus cuts n half, if it was 2 recovery bonus now its 1 because it broke.

11. Add elementary schools for vets to sign n to teach a noob, for io bonuses noobs sign up to learn n get an i got it badge lol take em around n show them the ropes for a couple of hours like signing onto a tf

12. and last for devs to not just read the ideas from the forums but try them out add they 're own stuff to make it realistic n release it on the game i once read someone saying a whip would be nice sure we have other stuff like it but hey they released earth assault like we havnt seen that why couldnt we got a whip power boring but at least it wouldve been new not recycled and yepp i sure wouldve tried it lol

My only problem with simul-clicks is not being told ahead of time. Otherwise I don't see a problem. The other three actually seem to come down to mob and map design on what works and what doesn't. I love the concept of having to actually defend something as opposed to always attacking.

And with one sentence you have added a valid idea to make running enemies more interesting and more dynamic.

The question I would ask first is... are you looking for suggestions for changes in the game to make it enjoyable? Or are you looking for things RIGHT NOW that you can do to make it enjoyable?

The "RIGHT NOW" part is easy... create some original Architect Missions and run them. Take some time, come up with some original creations, develop some stories... is there a story that you wanted to do differently? Maybe add your own twist to it?

If you can wait a little while, there is always "Going Rogue" when it comes out... in 2010. A whole new world full of new content and challenges to play with.

If you're thinking changes made to the game to make it enjoyable... well I would suggest finding a way to contact the developers directly (i.e. Hero Con) and coming up with some ideas, because going to the "Suggestions and Ideas" forum right now is sort of like turning to Bernie Madoff for investment advice. In fact I'm sorely tempted to suggest that the forum be renamed "Frustrations and Griefers" to better reflect what it has become.

LEAD full pick up groups. The game was reinvigorated for me as soon as I started intentionally and actively LEADING teams made up of random people. The different people, their personalities, playstyles and powers, make the game different EVERY time for me.

Take a look at the PuG Teams guide in my signature if you want to know the quick and easy way to do it.
