Origins

I know this is probably going to sound awfully silly, but do origins really have any bearing on anything in the game? If so, what are these things? Thanks. =)

AFAIK, they only impact a few things: what enhancements you can slot, the damage of a couple vet rewards, and your starting contact.

By and large, they don't change anything, but there's some notable differences between the origins.

First off, all origins have different inherent powers. All of them do ranged low ranged damage, but their damage types and additional effects, like -res or -dam, differ from origin to origin. They're pretty weak, though, so by the time you can slot something decent into your powers, the inherent powers will have outlived their usefulness. Generally, I stop using them at about level 12 when I get DOs.

Then, blue-side, the different origins get different starter contacts, who in turn throw different enemy groups at you. That, too, is only relevant up to level 5 when you get contacts independant from your origin. On that note, red-side only gets two starter contacts, both independant from your origin.

Lastly, both blue-side and red-side have a story arc where you get to talk to five different characters that tell you about the "Origin of Power". There's one character per origin, and the character whose origin matches yours tends to give you a larger picture about your Origin's, well, origins, whereas the other four give you general answers. However, this is just flavour text and has no bearing on game-play.

Supposedly, Origins were intended to play a larger part in the game, but right now, it's basically just RP-fodder.

Well, as my friend and I just found out, even though we have the same origin, our second contact is different from each other. We were hoping to follow the same path with contacts and missions and such, but that is apparently not the case. Thanks for the help.

There are a couple of missions that award a power that is different based on your origin

Summon Wailer (For Magic Origin characters) or Tar Patch (Non-Magic origin characters)

In most of the level ranges, there are multiple contacts for each origin who hand out the same missions. When you start, there is one per origin for each starting zone (i.e. a set of five for Atlas and a set of five for Galaxy). After that, there are more contacts per level, up to six. Then at high levels it drops off again, back down to one.

Just to add for the OP, at level 5-10 there are 3 possible contacts for each of the 5 origins so you will both get one of each origin eventually. Even if the contacts themselves aren't the same, the missions they give you will be.

A useful contact chart is Red Tomax's: Guide to Paragon City's network of contacts

Don't forget the "temp power" newbie ranged attack you get.

Teams are the number one killer of soloists.

That would be this:

Personally, I occasionally use them to pull on Melee characters. I also call them Permanent Origin-Based Temporary Powers, since they're still listed under Temporary Powers, even though they no loger are (temporary).

To summarize (and add in titles):

1. Being called by your origin. E.g. A Mutant Radiation Blaster.

2. First level origin specific inherent power.

3. Titles. The list of titles you can apply to your character at the trainer differs depending on your Origin.

4. Can only slot applicable Origin Specific Enhancements. There are Enhancement Stores and contacts that cater to a specific origin

5. Some Veteran/Temp Powers have bonuses dependent upon Origins, e.g. the 33-month veteran reward: Technology/Science/Natural get +50% damage from the Nemesis Staff, and Magic/Mutation/Natural get +50% from the Blackwand.

6. Heroes have contacts that are origin specific and prefer to refer to you to other contacts of the same origin, though, you can get the missions from all the contacts except for the starting contacts which are exclusive of other origins.

7. A very few missions cater to your origin. There's at least one where the temp power granted (Demon Box) depends on your origin. The arc, Origin of Power gives a background to each of the origins, but gives you a lot more specific information about your specific Origin.

Leave it to the Zombie to concatenate and summarize and be generally helpful.

He's like that. Takes all the fun out of being vague and stuff.

Enemies drop DOs and SOs based on THEIR origin, so you may wish to fight enemies of similar origins in order to get more drops you can use.

Freakshow drop tech, Circle of Thorns drop magic, etc.

Essentially no. There are some things conditioned by Origin, but they are, by and large, trivial.

My scrapper doesn't need an AoE. She IS an AoE.

If you and a friend are teaming often with a particular pair of toons, you may find it to your advantage to have different origins. That way, if you receive enhancements you can't use because of your origin, there's a chance your buddy can, and vice versa.
