Dark/Shield Help again

Has anyone ever built a dark/shield that focused more on survivability rather than raw dps? Almost like a paladin type character. I made a build for something like it, but its slightly disappointing, I was hoping for s/l resistance in the low 40s and passive regen around 300% but I can't seem to get it that high.

Honestly, I think it would be very similar to a more traditional build. You still want the soft cap, and you still want massive recharge because a lot of your survivability is tied up in how fast you can spam Siphon Life, and to a lesser extent your ability to double-stack Active Defense for DDR. You'd frankenslot Siphon Life instead of doing the pure Hamio approach, because you want a lot of additional recharge and you're willing to sacrifice some damage. You then want an attack chain that does decent DPS while spamming Siphon Life at some insane recharge rate, at least if you want to keep your hit points topped up instead of playing reactively, and I think keeping them topped would be a good idea. Most of your damage recovery will come from Siphon Life, and while regeneration is useful, I think it's of only secondary concern. Resistance and hit points are important, though, and more than in a traditional build if possible. I'd definitely push for those once the other must haves were in place.

I haven't planned one out, though, and I don't know if these initial ideas on how to do it would actually work out for the best in a real build. But that's how I'd at least start building one. Version 1, if you will.

I thought the builds being posted here have plenty of survivability. Between a well-slotted siphon life, 300% regen, DDR, and soft-capped defenses, most of the posted builds should be about as survivable as a defense scrapper can get. Short of slotting to reach the HP cap, I don't see a way to make a dark/shield more survivable.

Stacking s/l resistance seems like a futile effort. The amount you can get is very limited and won't make enough of a difference.

They do have good survivability but I like my characters to be able to survive a nuclear blast from Lord Recluse and Hamidon combined, okay that is an exaggeration but you get the idea. Stacking S/L resistance actually does have a large effect on your survivability, a 5 to 10% difference is noticeable.

Here is one I was toying with last night doesn't use the top chain but it does have decent recharge. You'll need Leandro's Mid's patch for this.

"Plenty of survivability" is relative. Yeah, a standard purpled out Dark/Shield is great for AVs. But what about two AVs? Three? Yeah, it'll do the RWZ challenge, but what about a DOUBLE RWZ challenge? Sometimes it's fun to trade speed for survivability, and see just how much you can survive and triumph over. Yeah, you could do it with a Tanker, but sometimes a survivability Scrapper is a better package for the job than a DPS Tanker.

More smashing/lethal resistance can make a big difference in these sorts of situations, because it helps deal with the serious spikes of damage you're taking. So does keeping hit points topped up by spamming Siphon Life faster than the DPS chain.

What kind of budget do you have? A half-billion inf can make a great build. If we're talking about less, I think something can be done for you. I planned a half-billion inf build for my DM/SD scrapper that I think will do well.

I see a few things that might be lacking in the build you posted.

First, Siphon Life is your only heal. It should be slotted to heal. You could be healing for almost twice as much per use. My favorite slotting of it gives 33% acc, 85% dmg, 86% end, 90% heal, and 79% recharge bonuses. That's with hami-o's. I imagine something close can be achieved with frankenslotting.

You are lacking an epic pool. There are some great powers in them. Physical Perfection is one of my favorites. I also like picking up Focused Accuracy and dropping 6 Gaussian's Fire Control in it for the 2.5% defense to all positionals. Some builds use Blaze Mastery for the extra AoE damage.

If you want to double-stack Active Defenses for the defense debuff resistance, you will need more recharge in it.

THATS the kinda scrapper I want....Double RWZ challenge, two AVs ...I can have about 5 bill if I pool my resources for that scrapper *hint *hint (im sorry was that considered begging?)

The problem with slotting Siphon Life that way is they would lose their soft cap to ranged defense. I didn't realize they were using purple until I just looked at it again. I have to suggest not using purples and use that money else where in the build.

You posted three builds in a row, so I will just go by the final one.

Siphon Life could still be slotted better. Also, knowing your budget could help people give you advice on how to slot things.

Here are two possible slotting options for Siphon Life that I like:
Put in the three Mako's dual-bonus enhancements. Then, add Numina's Heal/End, Heal/Rech, and Heal/End/Rech. That gives you 26% acc, 78% dmg, 73% end cost, 73% heal, and 73% recharge.

For something more expensive, try 2 Golgi, 1 Nucleous, Hecatomb Dmg/Rech, Crushing Impact Dmg/End/Rech, and Doctored Wounds Heal/Rech. That gives a bonus of 33% acc, 85% dmg, 86% end cost, 90% heal, and 79% recharge.

For both of those, global accuracy bonus is needed to obtain a decent hit chance against anything over +2. That usually isn't a problem with most builds, though.

The first option gives 240 hp with a 4.14s recharge in your build. Your slotting gives 225 hp with a 4.28s recharge. The biggest difference is the end cost. The 7.14 end cost is going to be a noticeable difference if you drop it down to 5.86. That's about a 20% endurance savings on a power you may have to use often. It is at a cost of 283 vs 299 damage and 148% accuracy vs 180%.

Next time, try not to spam the forums with three builds in a row. Edit your posts if you update a build without a reply.

I'm slowly but surely getting my DM/SD near the softcap (I haven't done much with DDR yet, that's gonna have to wait til 50 probably) and good Lord he's turning into a beast. I am not actually playing him at the highest difficulty he could manage because I don't want to outlevel any mid 40s content too fast (Ouro is just not the same). About the worst fight I've had so far is against Master Illusionists; those make me actually pop inspirations. Everything else pretty much melts. I'm just running /SD toggles and CJ so far and I'm hard pressed to make his endurance bar even move (Stamina 3 slotted and a Numina unique in Health).

Nasty, nasty, nasty character. Thanks to this forum and this thread for inspiring me.

Carnies are a unique challenge that I wish the game would have more of.

Eh, I'm not that thrilled with carnies. The endurance drain when they die is mostly an annoyance. The phasing in and out is mostly an annoyance. And then dark ring mistresses either hit you with their big drain and cause you to scramble to survive, or they miss with it and are easy. Master illusionists are pretty much the only ones that seem interesting to me, mostly because of the big variety of things that are suddenly all occurring at once, and how you deal with it all. They aren't binary easy/nasty like dark ring mistresses. But I'm not THAT thrilled with them.

Still, yes, challenging enemies are good. I spend more time fighting pushover groups, but the more challenging groups are more interesting. Like right now I'm farming Banished Pantheon. They're not particularly difficult, but there are some different things going on, though it's mostly the defense buffs (or is it accuracy debuffs?) and defense debuffs that I notice.

The end drain on death doesn't phase me that much, it's pretty much the nondirectional damage from the Master Illusionists, combined with the summons etc. Doesn't help that One With The Shield doesn't help against Psi damage.

I don't know that I'm going to play this guy too much past 50, by the time the build is nearly finished he's going to be so unstoppable he won't be that much fun to play. I've got most of the orange sets in melee taken care of, so now it's mostly just odds and ends like sticking LotG +7.5's etc.

On the other hand, i19 is gonna be REAL nice to this char, who is (imo) more power-strapped than slot-strapped. So we'll see. Hurry up devs!

Update on my I19 build, this one has 5% less recharge but it has higher resistances and recovery while having higher endurance cost but I have Dark Consumption and Conserve Power so I won't ever have any endurance issues.
