Traps/Son - softcapped EVERYTHING

Traps > this isn't your little brother's gadget set.

Ok so I was playing around with new traps and figured I'd pair it with sonic cause sonic is awesome and cause sirens' + tripmine would potentially increase the aoe damage otherwise lacking from sonic.

Anyway, I manage to softcap my def to:
EVERY damage type and position. (no use of pvp def IO either!)

It also has 66% s/l res and 47.5% global rech.

This isn't how I'd actually build the toon, more of just an exercise of whether it could be done. And the build isn't gimp at all

*just add 20.9% to all the totals as the new mids isn't set up to have FF gen as a toggle for totals (for defs only).

Seamless attack chain of shriek, scream, efence. Has howl for teams and provides 25.85% team def to all.

Click this DataLink to open the build!

I think traps looks like a pretty viable choice for defenders.

One thing I liked about traps, even as a secondary for an MM, is the whole smorgasbord of different IO sets it provides. So I'm not the least bit surprised you're able to come up with a build that provides all of the bonuses you did.

Pfft, everything my ***. No where near the soft cap to hamidon damage.

I was inpsired by this, and rolled a traps/sonic last night. It's very impressive so far.

Looking at this build again I'd steel the purple out of sirens song and change it to the hold proc in poison trap. It is a great proc in that power. It goes off a lot.

If I were to actually build a traps def I think I'd try to softcap s/l, ranged, and psi and then go after other bonuses. I think that would be a pretty indestructible toon.

I made a similar build myself, except that I took Howl and Screech, but I skipped Siren's Song. The reason i skipped Siren's Song is that I didnt really care about sleeping foes and dropping trip mines. I figured they'd actually all be dotted up and choking in my kill zone, so why sleep them? Also I'm going to 3-box a Traps/Sonic (lead driver) with a Traps/Dark and a Traps/Psychic, because all of those secondaries get 2 stuns, which let me get stun-stacking and let me get some smashing/lethal/melee defense from Razzle Dazzle.

Anyway, my build doesnt have the S/L resistance yours does, but I've got softcapped everything else also.

My Traps/Psy and Traps/Dark also achieve softcapping to everything as well. I've got no uber or expensive things in my build, except maybe 1 zephyr KB in each build. I wish I had them here on this PC to post but I dont.

The most amusing thing about the traps trio is that the team will have capped everything by level 12. Good times!

I've been massaging the build that I first posted a bit more to squeeze what I feel is even better numbers.
-better hp, 1398.9 vs 1335.8
-better regen, 30.43 hp/sec vs 26.9 hp/sec w/ triage active.
-bit better net recovery (recov less toggle drain) 2.38 eps vs 2.13 eps
-more even distribution of defense, lowest is 45.3 (psi), highest is 47.1 (ranged) *I realize higher can be beneficial but my goal was to softcap only, so for this project overages are wasted resources.
-bit better team defense 26.3 vs 25.85
-removed siren's song and replaced with screech. This will stack better with the stun of seekers to nail down a boss easier.
-much more useful slotting of poison trap
-should be more friendly for those wanting to exemplar down

It did however cost me 3.75% global rech

I think overall this is one of the better builds I've ever done and it would be very powerful. I think I'd tentatively place traps/sonic as a top 10 most powerful toon in the game.

edit: if my calculations are right this toon could theoretically live indefinitely through 1350 dps of incoming slash/lethal damage. So something that would kill a naked squishy in one second this build would actually be sitting even through (ie not getting hurt, but not healing excess). Vs damage with no resistance it could face about 930 dps of incoming damage.

That is before taking into account seekers which are an amazing -53.2% damage (so pretty much cuts incoming damage in half in ideal situations) and the fact that your traps actually pull a lot of agro of their own.

Your NOT, I repeat NOT soft capped to everything Defense wise

Soft capping is 45% 32 is I want to say is shuts down or hinders strikebreaker.

from what I saw, you where in your upper 20s in Defense.

Prognosis: read thread better, the issue with FFG not being able to toggle on was indicated in the OP as were instructions of what numbers to add ontop of what is displayed.

In short anything equal to or greater than 24.1% def will be softcapped (45%) when FFG is added on.

You even get a nice 20% tohit debuff from the two seekers for pesky mobs like Fortunatas that can still have a decent tohit chance through 45% psy def.

Posted

Hate to reopen a week old thread with a new Q(for those who might take issue) but are psionic attacks not covered by Melee, Ranged or AoE defense?

Posted

Mezmerise, Mass hypnosis and Dominate are not covered by postional and counted towards psi only. Thinks its the same with Total Domination.

Posted

The entire Mind Control set (and the clones of those powers used by enemies) ignores positional defense. Other psychic attacks are stopped by positional defense.

Posted

Frosticus' build caps all the typed defenses too, though, so its all good!

I'm posting my Traps/Sonic build here, just for the heck of it. It isn't as good as Frosticus' build in several areas. Specifically, my Def to pure Psi is "only" 37.8% and my Def to pure Fire and pure Cold is only 42%. However, I am capped on everything else (Smashing, Lethal, Energy, Negative, Melee, Ranged, AoE). Also, I dont have any global recharge to speak of. I also wont actually run Tough ... its just a mule for the Steadfast. I don't mind, though.

So, my build isn't as nice as Frosticus' build. However, it is still extremely safe thanks to softcapping *almost* everything, plus I have 59% global accuracy and 10% global damage, not counting Amplify and Power Build Up. It is also pretty cheap, with exception of the Miracle and Numina, which are basically superfluous (I may even only go with the Miracle and move the Numina slot to FFG for knockback protection). Since I'm only running Hover, Weave, and Combat Jumping (the latter being negligible on end cost) then I should be good.

Here is the build. Thoughts? I'm pretty stubborn in that I like what I like, but I'd at least listen to any comments about my build.

Thanks,

Lewis

UnicyclePeon, I wouldnt bother at all with the miracle. Seems like a waste of money to me. Your end drain is very low and even without the miracle youll have a high net endurance gain......so I would leave it out and use it in a toon that will have more end problems

Your build seems sufficient Uni. I won't tell you what you've done right or wrong since I have yet to play my traps up to lvl 50. What I will do is provide my build to give you a different path to softcapped positional. This build isn't very expensive, with the exception of Obliteration & the Decimations(I play on freedumb btw). The Miracle unique isn't tough to acquire either, for me at least. That's 2 posi's + 2 synapse....I can get those done in less than 7 days.
I realize a lot of people like Cloud Senses for the drones but that set is nearly impossible to come by on the markets and I'm not about to spend merits on those set pieces. I do have a Q for anyone with the information. I thought to place 2 additional procs in PGT. Is this still a reasonable idea given PGT was fixed?

My Traps is at 48 and waiting for me to respec it. I plan on going with this build as of now. You'll notice I stole some things from Frosticus. The only thing I don't have to make it happen is the Apoc set, so I prolly stick Thunderstike in it til then. Let me know if I'm missing anything.

BTW, thanks Frosticus

Edit: I realized I was gonna be sucking wind on this so I pulled a slot from Caltrops and put it in Stamina. I don't care for the fear element in it anyway and may dump it altogether, and take Charged Armor. I'm also looking at what I can do to get another slot in Shocking bolt for an extra 3% damage.

I did a bit more work on mids because I really wanted to wiggle Assault into this build. I did the Frosticus thing and dropped all travel except SS. Defense is a bit better, though not capped to all. Still pretty happy with it.
