For fun?

Is it just me that reacts to the fact that this section is located under the "For Fun!" part of the forum?

Makes me wonder if this whole section is a big joke for the company we preferably do not talk about. (Not to mention how people see to respond to suggestions and ideas)...

...oh, well...

This section was moved (from the Development section) here after a string of incidents involving a few infamous posters reported about every single post in this entire section and every thread turned into a flame war. Also, our beloved hero JRanger fell in the final battle. His struggle shall never be forgotten! /JRanger!

(although, a lot of people felt that JRanger was just as bad if not worse Either way, S&I is here because people didn't behave).

why would you quote an entire post if you will leave a reply in response to him right under his post. in real life you dont adress people you talk to by their names? or you just repeat everything they just said when you're in a conversation.
sorry for the off topic message but felt like mentioning this bad habbit i see on this forum.

It's a good way to make sure someone doesn't go back and change their message so you're responding to exactly what they have said and not what they rewrote after you posted.

And I don't see any rabbit/hobbit mutants walking around here...

...yet.

I'm guessing from the OP's location (The OP was probably on the EU forums up until recently) that he/she may not have known about "He Who Shall Not Be Named" and "I Wrote Code For NWN So I Know Coding Is Easy" and the shenanigans they started that got this section moved.

Because other people might have responded by the time I did. The old forums and a Re: section to see who you were responding to, but these don't so without quotes it becomes challenging to see WHAT someone is responding to. IMO, it's good "habbit" () to quote something that you're responding to.

If I'm writing a response to something, I'll quote it first. This is how I write in papers (because otherwise it's rather pointless). When having a conversation in person, you're not relying on mere letters, you've got context clues from the person's expressions, who the person is facing, etc. You lose a lot when you think that written and verbal communication's only difference is one is spoken and one is written. (which is why I use oh so many emoticons in my writing... I actually don't use as many on these forums as I do in other places.... and it's quite a challenge to avoid using them in formal writings which pisses me off so much).

It's good to repeat key pieces if there's any sort of extended delay in the conversation, like you'd have on these forums. And on these forums, it's just easy to just hit the 'quote' button than having to formulate it directly into the response.

I find it's a bad "habbit" to completely ignore the context. I mean, after all, you quoted my whole post Why would you do that, especially when calling such a thing a bad habit?

This and also because on the old forums when changed their posts they had the ability to stealth edit. Meaning they could suppress the little message that told us the post was edited.

There are also people that for whatever reason decide to delete their posts. That can lead to confusion as to what was being discussed.

Once quoted Player X can't deny that he/she never said something.

I'm fairly certain you can still stealth edit on these boards... at least the last time I edited a post, I was surprised when I saw it didn't say that it had been edited. Lets find out!

This post was EDITED!

I think it only displays an edit message after a certain time - like more than 5 minutes after the post was made.

Good. That means it's STILL a valid reason to quote people.

Could be... but that still leaves a rather large window to stealth edit! After 5 minutes or so I'll try editing again and see if it gets the little message added then...

That's what I thought he was talking about. Ironic that he quoted the person he replied to ...

Okay, you've peaked my interest- care to explain?

The OP's signature includes: @Sing Star (Extreme EU Defiant villain badge hunter), meaning his account is an EU account, also meaning he would have been on the EU forums, and likely not the US forums. The events we were talking about happened on the US forum, so he likely would have never heard about it.

Yeah I realized that the op was euro - but we DID also just have this discussion about what, 3 weeks ago as well?

Suffice to say that it was a MESSY situation that led to this section going from the upper parts of the forum area, to the nethers. Some folks would take that way too literally lol.

Using those same detective skills, I'm going to deduce that ReclusePhantom also is from the EU boards and was actually asking about the shenanigans. Sorry to poke you Kitsune Knight

I don't know all the details myself, ReclusesPhantom. I do know we don't talk about it - maybe because of the bad karma involved, maybe because we superstitiously fear talking about it will bring them back. I suggest you PM Forbin or Zekiran for details so they don't have to post them publically.

The shenanigans are basically what I said in the first post: Some people spam-reporting everyone that didn't support their suggestions (and at least a few that did), and JRanger's legacy of 'no' (which become /JRanger and a few other colorful variants) insta-response to most of the suggestions on this board (most of which were bad, he had a few 'yes'es).

There's not really much more to it.

You can glean (some) information about it from the JRanger article on Encyclopedia Dramatica:

The other by the name of KittyKrusader would make dumb ideas and couldn't handle any criticism and would ignore anyone who disagreed with him. These two posters started notifying any post to the moderator that said no, or states that they disagree with what was being said because they were butthurt their ideas always got no'd.

Then on 9/27/07 at 5:44 PM JRanger was banned by the moderator Ex Libris. She didn't say why but we are led to believe it is because she could't handle dealing with all the stuff Shiverwraith and KittyKrusader were notifying. So rather then telling them to STFU and ban them for spamming her in private messages she banned JRanger when he didn't break any of the rules.
(Note most of the edits to the Dramatica article were made by JRanger)

In summation:

A bunch of jackholes were being jackholes so the devs moved the whole forum down to "For Fun!' in the hope that everyone would stop taking it so damn seriously.

It doesn't seem to have worked.

I was here at the time, and distinctly remember one of my first posts was to call them a bunch of idiots after one of their nastier flame wars. I'm still here after insulting them, leading me to suspect the moderators agreed with me, but couldn't say so publicly.

Edit: the edit marker showed up on mine.

Um, so it was moved because people didn't behave...
Um... Perhaps we should close down the forum completely then? ..or stop pretending it's moderated?

I fail to see what good it did to move it to this section, except telling us we can write whatever the (younameit) we want and be totally ignored meaning any suggestion is pointless. Well, after the last debacle when I made a follow-up suggestion I won't ever make a suggestion again anyway.

To sum it all up: We all hate each other and we're not prepared to listen to anyone because we're right and everyone else is wrong even if they actually agree with us because.. (endless rant)

...oh, well! Whatever...

Well, that's not my perception of how useful S&I is at all. Several thngs brought up here and discussed - both pro and con - have been implemented in the game.

It looks like you are letting one or two bad experiences color your view of this forum a bit excessively.

There is also a good bit of comraderie on this forum, where we may argue with each other, but although snarky, rarely are we downright mean intentionally.

That being said, if the same suggestion has already been discussed in excrutiating detail and should have been found with a very simple search (merge the servers, vehicles, raise the level cap, etc.) some people react with snarky comments, some have cut'n'paste canned answers, some are impatient and frustrated that the same dead horse has been resurrected AGAIN. Those who have been in the NA S&I forum for years may at times find it hard to respond cheerfully to the bazillionth time an idea floats up.

I think both the EU and the NA forum posters are still adjusting to the merge. NA posters need to remember that EU posters may not have seen our point/counterpoint on some stock issues, but EU posters should remember that there may be many topics which are hot button issues tthat will attract vehement responses. Try to remember the response is to the idea, not to the poster personally.

Oh - and this forum is most certainly moderated....

It was pointed out to us that the devs would listen to well-thought-out arguments - not petty mudslinging.

And it was far from "just a little out of hand" really, it was a MESS. I don't mind it down here, because in the For Fun section you can get and justify joke threads too. Up in the omg seriousness area, you'd get flamed just for that.
