Forum Suggestion.

Can we dispense with Reputation and Tags already?

Based on what I've seen so far, Reputation is meaningless, as the cliques go around boosting each other and posting insulting comments anonymously and permanently.

The Tags are just as bad, being an anonymous way to insult and derogate people's ideas and comments.

There's enough bad blood on the forums already, do we really need more?

I'm personally surprised rep is still here, given some of the first comments when the new boards came out were "Didn't you learn your lesson with the stars?" and "I'm turning my rep off now, this is a bad idea."

(Mine, if I look at the User CP, is pretty positive - but I still want to see it go away. And if it can't go away, get rid of the anonymous nature of it.)

As for the tags, they could be useful - but there are so many useless ones ("I like pie" isn't exactly helpful) that it's swamped in BS. Again - *could* be useful, but at this point, not very. Either get rid of them, approve new ones, or set up pre-approved tags (which is really self-defeating - what are you going to do, tag a suggestion as a suggestion when it's already in the suggestions forum?)

Indeed, every time I go to my control panel, I'm confronted by a list of insulting comments assigned to me (even though I turned off Rep). I've sent several messages to whoever is in charge, but haven't had any reply.

As you say, the idea is fine. The problem is we can't trust people to use it properly. It's just become another way to attack people, and anonymously, at that.

i think at least... if you have yours turned off... you shouldnt be able to leave rep for someone else..

No one goes there anymore, it's too crowded...

Personally, if you have yours turned off (IMHO) you shouldn't be able to do anything with it - see it, leave it for others, etc.

Of course, given it's completely anonymous you can't tell unless someone's signed it. Which is, of course, part of the issue.

There is some moderation going on in reference to the tags. Some "less than helpful" ones have been removed.

However if they are going to make it into anything more than "Forum PVP" the moderation needs to be stepped up a couple of notches. Otherwise just turn it off and be done with the headache.

Quite so. Well said.

There is a rep/day limit. The 'cliques' as you put it use all 10 of their reps up on each other so its not us negging you.

Tags are harmless and they can be useful if you know how to search them. That said I use them to amuse myself and your seeming entitlement to getting rid of amusement annoys me.

In summary: Rep is fine, Tags are good, I like badgers

Well, I continue to get new negative messages daily, even though I've turned off Rep. I've messaged the boards, I've messaged the mods. Nothing is being done, and it's really starting to irritate me.

Can we at least have it turn the hell off when we turn it off?!

I agree, honestly.

The rep system is.. stupid in it's current incarnation.
Most of the neg rep, is just a cowards way of saying "you're wrong", if you have the less-popular opinion on a strongly debated topic, you're going to get negged out the ***, usually with such things as "Don't get it."

The idea is great, but people are absolute idiots who can't be trusted with any level of power.

... Tagging I think is actually just funny >.>

1: There's already been X# of threads on this topic. The forums would be vastly more improved if posters like yourself would quit wasting space by padding their thread count with redundant and superfluous garbage.

2: Rep appears to be working fine for those of us not involved with rep padding threads. Users that perpetually spew garbage on the forums are either red-dotted or have disabled it to hide their lack of posting worth.

3: I'm ambivalent towards thread tagging.

Be well, people of CoH.

Did it ever cross your mind that you get negative messages daily because you annoy the hell out of your fellow gamers with useless threads and posts?

Not sure why you said this, as the original creation date was 8/30, quite some time ago.

You're either making bad assumptions, or painting with an overly broad brush - or both. The feature is similar to one that was removed on the *old* boards (for good reason - and was never *missed,* frankly) and IMHO should also be removed on *these* boards.

Similar but not the same. What I see, which is what has created my overall impression of new rep system, is that many of the posters which I've always viewed in a negative light have low reps or have disabled it.

There are, of course, exceptions. Some posters who I've always felt added to the community have chosen to disable theirs for reasons I'm sure they feel are valid. Cool. They have the option and are choosing to use it.

Some posters have capped rep due to partaking in forum games involving padding their rep. While I don't approve of such things, it was inevitable.

For the rest, the rep meters appear to be working as intended.

With all generalizations and stereotypes, there contains some level of truth. Same holds true here. Red repped individuals are *generally* a waste of space. Good repped individuals are *generally* not.

That leaves you and I on different sides of the keep or toss rep argument. I hope it stays in place for as long as these boards are used.

Quit posting new threads on existing topics and your rep might not suck so badly. -Bill Z Bubba

I'll point out for Bill that the vast majority of threads that I get slagged in are not threads that I start.

I think there's been three threads that I started on Defender Balance (for example), and more than a dozen of other people's, yet I get twenty negative marks for every post I make (regardless of what I say in the posts), usually either the standard, unhelpful "Don't get it" or a variety of insults.

In any case, I, and others who have thoughts to express will continue to post threads on whatever topics we wish, no matter how insulting certain members of the community might get.

I refuse to be shouted down (though, I am not unreasonable), and as some will tell you, I can be remarkably stubborn.

If the rep system is going to be used as a means of anonymously insulting people, then I have to describe IT as the waste of space. If someone feels they have to attack me, they should do it publicly and prove just how childish they truly are.

My favorite negative rep comment so far? -

That's it! Just a hyphen. A bit frustrating, though honestly, I only really look at the comments in my CP to laugh at what other people think of my posts. I already KNOW that I am not a pillar of useful knowledge and not well liked. It doesn't really come as a surprise. However, it does seem like it is easier for people to leave negative rep than it is positive.

Of course you'll continue starting new threads on topics with existing threads. It's what you do.

I hope you noticed that I signed my neg rep hit for you. I don't want you thinking I'm just another anonymous meanie head.

As mentioned, the vast majority of those individuals that consistently get negative rep comments deserve them.

If you wish to stop getting them, stop deserving them.

I'm not shouting you down. I'm only attempting to explain why you see what you see.

Long live the rep system!

If they took the anonymity out of the rep system it would get rid of a lot of the stupid comments people get. Allowing anonymous comments doesn't serve any purpose..

It serves one purpose.

The truly stupid that leave actual insults can be plucked out by the mods and removed from the forums permanently.

The comments are only anonymous to us.
