Forum Recognition Poll

I'm sure you'll agree that there are certain members of the City of Heroes' forum whose efforts have made things both in-game and in-forum easier, more informative or more fun.

I think an excellent way to recognize their efforts would be a forum-wide vote in several different categories. Each winner could receive an in-game prize in the form of a specially colored title that would appear on each character's name in that player's account; similar to the titles awarded at special events such as the Miss Paragon City competition and the more recent title from the Anniversary event.

As this would require Dev involvement I am putting this thread forth more in the nature of a petition/poll to see if there is interest in the forum community. If enough of us /sign this or support it through positive discussion, maybe the Devs will agree to ratifying the prize.

The titles/categories I have thought up thus far include:

Wise Man/Woman on the Mountain: Perhaps they made a series of excellent Guides, maybe they're always ready with an answer in the Questions Forum, but this person not only always has the answers, they are happy to share them.

Above and Beyond: This person has created something outside the forums that is note-worthy. Whether it is a calculating tool, a map site, a hint or informational web page, or what-have-you, they have made a place that sits high and ready on your favorites list.

Renaissance Man/Woman: Most of us just play the game, some people use it as a Muse to create art. Whether pictures, stories, video or music the winner of this title has captured our imagination with their artistic endeavors.

Court Jester: Always ready with a joke, a funny captioned picture or maybe just silly observations about the game we love, the Court Jester lives to make us laugh.

The Philosopher: The Philosopher always questions and cross-examines. They look under the surface and get the rest of us thinking as they pose interesting subjects for us to discuss for page after page of debate.

The Crusader: Everyone has their own private wish-list for the game, but the Crusader is the one willing to fight for what they want. The person earning this Title has fought tirelessly to "fix" an aspect of the game they care about, drawing serious Red-Name attention and perhaps even succeeding in their quest.

The Investigative Reporter: This person always seems to have the scoop. Whether they're reporting about a Developer interview on some obscure web site or scooping movies, television shows or comic book announcements, this person is always there first.

If you have other suggestions, please list them. I don't think we want a list that's too long however.

Again, the purpose of this thread is to find out if there is Forum support for this type of contest. It is also here to get ideas for categories, prizes, rules, etc.

Please do NOT suggest possible winners in categories prior to this becoming an official contest.

Thank you,

Ugly Rumor

we had that with the rep system... and you see how fast people turned that into a joke.

Forum popularity contests are NEVER a good idea. Plus, with the recent merger of the EU and US communities, those deserving on the EU side would likely be overshadowed by the sheer weight on numbers on the US side.

There's just no way such a thing could ever be made fair.

...A brand new poster is staging a forum popularity contest?

Actually, they used to do that yearly... if twice counts as regularly that is.

Ah, I recall what happened to "Best Forum Avatar..."

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

Agreed.

There are a ton of people on this forum that spring to mind through their contributions (list deleted).

That doesn't even count YOU, who even in asking some basic questions and joining convos has made THIS forum a BETTER PLACE. You don't need 10,000+ posts to be valuable!

YOU ARE VALUABLE!

Correct!

As was pointed out earlier, there used to be polls involving in-game stuff like Favourite TFs, NPC Dialogue, PvP zones and so on.

I appreciate the spirit in which the OP made the suggestion. I know that there are people in these forums that are invaluable resources to the player base. But for the reasons already given, I can't support the suggestion.

Besides, modesty forbids. I wouldn't want other forumites feelings hurt when the tidal wave of votes catapulted me into the top spot in all categories.

Freedom: Blazing Larb, Fiery Fulcrum, Sardan Reborn, Arctic-Frenzy, Wasabi Sam, Mr Smashtastic.

I am glad someone has finally taken the time to recognise me for all the effort and thought I have put into the forums here.

You are welcome.

Over in the EU we did a legends of the game list that people voted were the most popular/made the most difference both on the forums and in the game. I think by the end there was a very mature and precise list.
Think it went something like;

  • Mothers love [probs the nicest person ingame!]
  • Zortel [One of the main roleplayers in the EU]
  • Salacious [EU's badge psycho]
  • Tsumiju Zero [Rikti's main enemy]
  • Ultimate regen ninja [helped a LOT of us lowbies out when we first started]
  • Globey/rent [major pvpers]
  • Illusion master [funny guide person]
  • Tainted Greek [Welcome to the radio!]
  • Coin [cameraman extradionnaire!]
  • Psygon [not one person will say no to the style!]
  • Golden girl [love her or not, shes always a pleasure to talk to ingame]
Think that covers the list in what the majority voted for, one or two who i think should be on it anyway but they're the names people voted for most. ALL great great people.

So, are we taking a forum poll for a Forum Poll or not?

Rep and Stars were jokes to start with. Any system where people anonymously rank others is destined to go down poorly when people start clustering.

I do agree. I think saying "Thank you" or a message saying, "Hey, I really appreciated your help/time/effot/link to www/etc is recognition enough and, for me, will often count more than a poll or contest.

Actually, a while back I had started a thread that referenced Apple's famous "Here's to the crazy ones..." commercial, where forumites stated who they felt had helped to enrich the game, the forum, or players' experience.

You had to say WHY you were listing these people (needless to say, you couldn't mention yourself), and surprisingly, a lot of players were glad to be able to recognize folks they felt had made things more enjoyable for them. A couple of the rednames commented on the thread, too, glad to see that the playerbase was willing to acknowledge their own and their hard work on the game.

Sometimes it was because of something big, othertimes it was "I remember the first time I played, and such-and-such helped me and showed me how to play, and it kept me playing this game when I might have otherwise said the hell with it."

Unfortunately, the thread got deleted when the forums were moved.

As much as I agree... I miss my Tech Devil title.
