European Meet?

If, theoretically, someone was to try to organise a European Meet of some kind:

1. Where would be good?
2. How many people would come?
3. What sort of venue would be suitable?

I've never been to any player meets or such like and I'd love to be able to make it to one. Logically the best place for one is likely to be Birmingham, but the further north the better for me. When? Dunno October holidays? And where? Somewhere with a lot of computers and wi-fi and close to a half decent pub and a travel lodge/plenty of B&Bs

Now ive just realised you said European meet which I stupidly took to mean "UK" like the typical ignorant Brit that I am. So that puts my suggested location out of whack, I will say that I would personally prefer it to be in the UK for obvious reasons.

Why, what's wrong with Birmingham? I'm sure all the German and French and Russian(?) players would love to check out Birmingham. It's not know as 'The Monte Carlo of England' for nothing, is it!?

Obviously, we need to pinpoimnt ALL the European Players locations, and then locate the exact geographocval point thats at the center of all those locations, averaged out. I wonder where it would be.

Technically, it would be better to determine the distribution of players and then determine the easiest location to travel to. That's relatively unlikely to be the geometric centre of the distribution.

Brum isn't actually a bad location. It's got relatively easy transport links via a fairly small airport (meaning budget airlines).

OK, Dr Serious!

I was loking forward to jestingly positing we all meet in a hamlet on top of an Alp or somewhere.

But Brum's fine with me! Although it wqould be cheaper for me if everyone flew to Warsaw. You can stay in my flat, if you like.

Well the geographical centre of Europe is somwhere in Lithuania, however for some reason I'm not convinced that would be such a hot spot for most our community, never know, been wrong before. Might still get yer abandoned shack though mrcaptainman.

Brummie would still be a fairly logical choice, good transport links with cheap flights to Europe and easilly accessable from most places.

Only ever seen bham at 70 miles an hour plus so would be nice to actually have a reason to stop by.

How did you manage to go 70 past Brum? The normal operating speed is 20. Also, from the motorway is the best way to see it. I could be prejudiced.

Yea meant on the motorway, not quite crazy enough to bomb around the city centre at 70... Well not a city centre I don't know anyway

I'd suggest Amsterdam. The Netherlands are pretty much smack between the three main Euro 'factions' (UK, France, Germany) and the people are very likely to speak English and a lot seem to be able to converse in basic French or German (this for those attendees that might be worried as to how to get around). It's a breeze to get to the outskirts of the city by car if you're so inclined and the inner city has a dense enough public transport grid. Plus, it's a really ******* pretty city.

Their central position also means, and this is really the important bit, that it's easy to get beers from all over. I have no intention of having to subsist on Kilkenny all the damn time cause the rest of the local beers either tastes like someone poured an ashtray into it or like someone spiked it with lemonade. And let's not even get into French banana-flavoured beers and similar heresies.

(And while I can't think of a single hemp product I care about, their liberal laws might be a boon to some.)

It aint that bad on the beer! We got good stuff

Just remember, although Schiphol people may think its next to Amsterdam, its not. Its very normal taking a cab, but those are fairly expensive in Netherlands.

I'm pretty positive there's a high-speed rail line going from the airport to the inner city, but it's been a few years, and I've always just driven to Amsterdam (then got a hotel on the city's outskirts and used public transport from thereon, cause really, the inner city is not meant for driving).

Yes, there is a train going from Schiphol airport to Amsterdam every 15 minutes.
Also, Schiphol Airpost is about as far from Amsterdam Central as Burmingham Airport is from Burmingham New Street.
And closer than the London airposts, by my estimations.

Beat me to it. 20 is quite optimistic, in my experience. And that's on the motorway. I'm told that if the traffic is glued to the road outside that big RAC building, then it's glued to the road right across Birmingham.

The only way to get to the centre of Brum is to tunnel underneath it using an army of Molemen, but last time I tried that we emerged in the biscuits aisle of a Sainsburys and had to pay a hefty fine.

Never been to Amsterdam, though. I bet I wouldn't even need the Molemen.

hmm... I would also say Amsterdam. Schiphol airport connects most flights from all over Europe. It is more in the middle... English speaking dutch are very common...

The train from the airport to the city is actually real easy.

If we go for a more central lying place... hmm... Brussels I guess.

Shadowe... Do you know a gaming centre in Amsterdam?

Me?!

Please don't be asking me. Ask Ghostie, instead. He's more likely to know.

Reasons:

Ghostie is Dutch.

Shadowe (the "e" is important, allegedly) was born in Birmingham, was a child in London, grew up on North Oxfordshire and currently resides in the South West of England. Oh, and I have a phobia of being in places outside the UK (not just nerves - panic attacks, like the ones I get on railway platforms). It takes an effort of will for me to leave this blessed isle.

So... Sorry, but I can't help.

Dont expect much for 'game shops' in Netherlands. Lan-gaming or cafe's are that uncommon, since the majority has a PC already at home. Those few that are around mainly focused on internet, hardly for gaming (let alone they would even have a CoX client on it). Most lan-parties one 1 time only, none are open throughout the year.

I do believe there are some companies that do those rent-outs for lan-gaming, but wont be cheap to rent a place, computers and proper internet acces.

Dont know about Belgium, i presume not much different.

I've always managed to get the train. And bearing in mind how, erm, confused I usually was catching the return flight I still managed it fairly handily. Amsterdam train station is a bit scary though.

Amsterdam would be a good place for it, everywhere seems to fly into Schiphol (except Ryanair, another bonus)
