Its not all about how much damage each blaster set can put out but what tricks they can bring as well.
AR has 6 out of 9 attacks that are at least typed partial lethal: 3 attacks with KB, 1 attack with -def, 1 attack does only smashing for piddly damage as it is a disorient, and 2 powers that are pure fire damage. .
Archery has 7 out of 8 attacks that are at least typed partial lethal. 1 attack also fire, 1 attack also smashing, only 1 attack does KB, and 1 attack does only smashing for piddly damage as it is a disorient.
Lethal is at the top for most resisted damage type. Fire is on the bottom. AR gives more toys to play with; Archery gives you little pointy sticks. With AR you knock down those robots and then burn them; With Archery, you knock down those robots and then poke these little pointy sticks at their eyes only to discover they have visors or eyeshields.
If you are gonna fight a group with no resistance to lethal, Archery will always win in damage output. Without delving into #'s, start mixing resist and defense in group of foes and maybe AR pulls close AND can be safer at it.

Anything with redraw, stop putting weapon away when u cast a power of the other side of the set. A regen doesnt have to put his sword away to heal himself, a AR blaster doesnt have to put his gun away to use buildup, why even put it away while its in the left hand while doing something else with the right hand? With SD its even worse, due a clicky that u have to use every xx seconds.

I'll start off with a conversation I had on Ventrilo with some friends and we concluded that Empathy on a Defender is less beneficial to a team in comparison to a Controller with Empathy as a secondary. Granted for non-power gamers Empathy Defender is bread & butter, meaning a SO dominate built team is fine, but when it is applied to power gamers it seems to take a step backwards with Kinetics taking the forefront for IO dominate built teams. I unfortunately don't have any real suggestion for Empathy, just the general idea of what my friends have assessed.
Second, Assault Rifles are now laughable at best when it comes to a powerset option for a Blaster, thankfully for Corruptors it's less of an issue because of Scourge, but as far as using it on a Blaster is that Archery has such a larger lethal output what's the point aside from aesthetics? Yes, I know I'm not currently looking at the numbers,(It's 3 am.) but Assault Rifle could use a slight boost especially for a Blaster. That's my two cents at least for now. I'll check some number at time when I'm really awake, unless anyone else wants to tackle them. |
At level 50 and with IOs, my AR is a freaking AOE PvE god....That also can do alot of damage to single targets-especially if that single target is immobile(ignite ftw)...Nonetheless, he also spent many levels in gimp status.
The biggest problem with the blaster version of AR is all the AOE and minimal mitigation.

More villain than hero these days
Rebuild ALL blaster secondaries, to bring them into line with /NRG and /mm.
They should have somthing about them that makes them unique and ADDS to and COMPLEMENTS the primaries.
Some of them are just a joke compared to the others. /Fire for example is and will more than likely always be the redheaded stepchild of secondaries because it brings NOTHING special to the table.
Yes we all know Fire Sword Circle does alot of damage and is a good PBAOE, so what. Most blasters take 2 MAYBE 3 if your lucky moves from the secondary if they are /fire.
Mental Manipulation is a bunch of cool controls, and tech powers. Energy Manipulation is a bunch of good melee, and boosting abilities to make your primary better. /Devices is what you would think it would be, your the trapsters, the gadgeteer.
Fire is...... well....... you get ..... some...... more dmg? and a bunch of moves that no blaster in theyre right mind should want to have.
Blazing Aura???? Combustion???? Burn????? yeah.
How about we take a look at MM and then look at the original secondaries and see how much of a gap there really is.

Trip mine - Cut animation time down to 1 sec.
Time Bomb - Cut animation time down to 1 second and allow the caster to set the delay from 4 - 15 additional seconds.
Gun Drone - Cut animation time down to 1 second. Make it a permanent pet that doesn't expire unless destroyed.

Remove Black Hole. Do not replace it with anything. The powerset will have 8 powers. Dark Servant will still be acquired at level 32/38.
Rebuild ALL blaster secondaries, to bring them into line with /NRG and /mm.

Dev is the first in line that might need some help, due lack of buildup, the others are pretty ok.

Concerning AR, it sorta depends on WHEN and HOW you look at the numbers as well. Sometimes, straight math doesn't reflect reality.

Secondairies from blaster are 'support', be it thus damage wise (elec/nrg, fire on mass aoe), softcontrol (partly MM, ice, bitty dev), or a mix of this.

You should never base your opinions on a situation where you have backup. Im talking solo, or when you have no tank, or no scrapper, or no meatshields on the team. Im talking making each and every blaster as soloable and awesome as every dom, every troler, every properly built defender.
Blasters are great, no argument there, but the problem lies in the lack of variety and options to make them unique and fun. Ive been playing my fire blaster faithfully since beta, and I can tell you that in terms of having tricks and staying alive in really hairy situations, it holds NO candle to MM, Ice, Dev, NRG etc.
I think all the seconaries need looked at, with the acception of NRG, and MM.

I'd like to see the single target Force Field and Sonic shields get the Mastermind Pet Upgrade treatment; increased endurance cost in return for turning them into AoE buffs. It wouldn't be imbalancing; the powers already recharge fast enough that you can keep a whole party bubbled. What it WOULD do is remove the irritating buffbot aspect of those powersets.

/Fire Manipulation prevents hairy situations by making most everything dead before they can respond and by making the few survivors desirous of fleeing instead of attacking. Its not very intuitive and difficult to learn. It uses far too much endurance and Consume is not on a fast enough recharge to help as much as it should. Combustion has issues. But the monkeys who randomly picked powers out of the Fiery hat did pretty alright, in my book.

This is in the same category as the infamous "Range is your defence!" argument. The problem with "just kill it before it kills you" is that when you dont, you die. What if you miss somthing really dangerous with your AOEs? The biggest hole in this argument is and will always be that no matter how much dmg your moves do, they arent going to soften, prevent, or help you recover in any way from that HUGE alpha your about to take from the mob.
Fire primary doesnt suffer from this because you can chuck fireball while diving behind a wall, or tree or rock lol. You cant do ANYTHING to protect yourself at all with FSC, Combustion, Consume, etc. And since the the sit lacks ANY tech powers you are left with no tricks when that mob that you "just kill em first" isnt dead and now you are outnumbered, out damaged, and out positioned.

And if the Devs don't want to make them PBAE-cast then a 15-20min duration would work instead, so you could buff everyone at the start of the mission and not have to worry about re-buffing until the start of the next mission.

And a big I AGREE! to the aoe buff/bubble thing. At start of the mission everyone is buffing, halfway u only do when u notice.. near the end, nobody ever buffs. (except SB :P).

I think Kinetics, Radiation Emission, Stone Armor, Willpower, and VEATs need to be buffed.
Dispari has more than enough credability, and certainly doesn't need to borrow any from you.

I would add a +30% or +40% damage buff to Targeting Drone in /Devices, make the Gun Drone a permanent pet, and replace Time Bomb with something useful (like the FF generator from /Traps hah! Well, I can dream... - maybe a mobile Triage Beacon instead) - then I might be tempted to play /Devices one day.
I would also turn all phase/intangible/capture control powers (Black Hole, Dimension Shift, Sonic Cage, Detention Field) into either toggles so you could switch them off at will, or give them a much shorter duration (10secs, say) with a very short recharge (8secs, say) so you could keep it applied for whatever duration you want but not inconvenience your team by rendering them untouchable for too long (and 30secs is too long).
I would also add minor passive mez protection to the mandatory passive resist power that Peacebringers and Warshades are forced to get from their secondary (Incandescence and Absorption respectively). Mag2-4 vs stun/hold/immob/sleep would be a major help but still be less than half as much mez prot as most VEATs get (my Bane has passive mag6 to most effects from both Bane and Wolf armour - this seems fair as passive protection as my other VEATs get much more from their mez prot toggles but are burning end to use those).
I would also turn Storm Summoning's O2 Boost into a PBAE (like Radiant Aura is) and change Gale into Knockdown instead of Knockback, plus switch the positions of both powers so that Corruptors/Controllers/Masterminds got O2 Boost instead of Gale as their mandatory power.

I see no advantage in them now compared to toggles - the traditional advantage to mez protection clickies is that they could be stacked in PvP, but that was almost always unnecessary in PvE and now PvP mez prot/res has been changed I'm not sure it's even a benefit there anymore.
Electricity Blast is an overall anemic set that needs some help: It seems designed to soft control, and can theoretically drain mobs of endurance, but it can't drain any mobs that actually matter leaving the player reliant on weaker-then-normal damage. Swapping out the end drain (and completely unnoticed end-steal) for powers which force mobs to take a high priority, attack-preventing "oh noes, I'm being shocked!" animation for a quarter-second or so (akin to the "I'm throwing up" animation from /traps, but with a much shorter duration) would possibly be of much greater benefit to the set.
Forcefields, having no actual debuffs, mediocre soft control (admittedly improved now that repulsion bomb does knockdown), and redundant (or maligned) control effects renders it of little benefit most of the time. Changing detention field from a single-target phase shift to a single-target debuff to enemy damage would make the set worlds better. Dumping Repulsion Field (which is redundant thanks to the far-superior Force Bubble) in exchange for, in order of usefulness: A -regen or -resist debuff, a -rech debuff, or a -def debuff (or an area -damage debuff) would make the set far more viable both solo and in a team support role.
