In the last 3 months, I've noticed a sharp upswing in YouTube PMs and comments on my trailers asking "how do u get there" or "how do i get that" or "where is that?" (They are, in fact, referring to places like Cimerora or Ouroborous, or getting stuff like the Epic Archetypes or Roman armor. For some reason, my I-12 trailer gets the most of these.)

I'm wondering if this is yet another side effect of people only playing the AE content and skipping the regular stuff.

Maybe I should put a link in at the end of each video pointing to the ParagonWiki. Hmmmmm...

Still, I keep telling them when they ask...

I think i would've been ruder and just said "You'd find out if you'd step outside of the AE"

Maybe they are new or never played the game xD *cough*

Maybe so... though in my experience, most of the new players tend to identify themselves as new and ask for general help, not just 'how do i get romn armor?'

No 4reel, I think in order to get to the AE you should have to have a 50 with atleast 155 hours of real game play on it.
With atleast 25 NORMAL gameplay badges.

It's best to pop a paragonwiki.com down there and say look that over. i wouldn't go much farther than that. Make them go out and learn stuff, if they want to sit in the AE building and learn nothing, that's fine with me, keep them there and off the tf's that i do. I'll be happier because of it. Don't hand feed them, but answer questions as you can. It's what i do. I try not to be spiteful or arrogant, but sometimes it sneaks out.

You're very nice and it's great that you try to help. I think some of us old guys and girls get abit bent out of shape over it sometimes. It's frustrating and gets on my nerves sometimes, but i do what i can.

You could always make a video of a character walking out of AE and getting on the train and then send them a link to that.

Subtle AND helpful.

The saddest part is that once they found out where those places are, they'll go back to the MA, anyway. OR SO I AM LED TO ASSUME.

I'd really love to see a 'How not to AE' video made.
It could be really funny if done right. I'm thinking along the lines of the classic 'Your powers and you' vid.

There is a whole world of places to explore and they spend an entire career. (I call the 1-50 journey for my toons a career...) they spend the whole time on one map, fighting the same boring mobs...

Just never saw the appeal personally, then again I never played WOW. We need some kind of disclaimer on the box, letting all the blizzard refuges know, that this game doesn't start at the level cap.

Bad idea. First, NC still gets paid off the box sale so dissuading someone from buying would be bad (from NC's perspective). Second, someone's bound to get offended by that disclaimer. Heck, people get offended by game specs ("That game sucks! The sys reqs are too high! My PC can't run it!" Yeah well, we can't have prettier visuals sticking to systems that your FX 5700 and 1 gig of RAM can handle) so basically putting a note on the tin saying "This is not the WoW you're looking for" would have a vocal contingent calling PS/NC "elitists" or some other ridiculous term.

Oh, and WoW isn't the only game where "the game starts at the level cap". There were MMOs before that (EQ1, DAoC are two examples I can think of) that WoW got its basic philosophy from.

1 gig of ram is sufficient for the game still, non?

I've 1.5gb and working not too bad.

Personally, I don't feel this has anything to do with AE. Some of these places are out of the way or at least somewhat "hidden" within the game. It's not like they're asking where Kings Row is.

If you don't go to your Midnight Club contact when he pops up, it's easy to miss and thus forget about. Ouroborous is very easy to miss. Even the Shadow Shard could be a forgotten location...

Regardless of all that, I love your videos .

Maybe you've done this already, but maybe create a "newbie's bloopers" vid. Y'know, stuff we all had to learn the hard way....

-- the "ins" and "outs" of trams... you can't take the tram from the exit side. Also, learning which trams go where (that one actually took me a while).

-- picking your battles... 'cause a level 5 isn't really tough enough yet to take on an orange & 4 yellows. Or, trying a "pull" and ending up with the entire group. Or, while fighting one group, accidentally aggroing a second.

-- becoming street smart... along with avoiding those pesky reds & purples at low levels, how the heck to get over fences and walls.

-- follow the beacon... just because it's suddenly off screen doesn't mean it's stopped existing.

-- the joys of learning how to run when speed boosted... yes, you'll probably feel like the roomba vac at first.

I'm sure you get the idea... it could be fun and informative.

Yes, everything is MA's fault.
There have never been new & uninformed players ever before in the history of the game.

To be fair, I've seen older players who still don't know about Cim, who didn't AE up.

If it's because they don't read the patch notes, maybe they're returning from a hiatus.

Hence my OP statement with "I wonder if..."

My husband has just chimed in across the desk agreeing with the idea of making a "Things Every CoH Player Should Know" video. (However, he suggested starting it with a player coming out of the AE building, stopping, immediately doing the /cower emote with the text bubble "AAAAGGGGHHHHHHH!!!! DAYLIGHT!!!!!!! AAAAAGHHHHH!!!!" and then promptly dashing back inside.)

I like the idea of "which trams go where", "follow the beacon," "how to run when SB'd", and so on. "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about COH But Were Afraid to Ask."

Thats not the point. The point is AE allows them to 'Do it all' in a matter of days. With no replay value to them, they pay for a month and then move on. This isn't a good business practice.
Games will always have uninformed players. Thats not the issue.

Your right. This game had bad players before AE, it's just that the AE box brought in a lot of new blood.
New blood that has been tainted by the ease of leveling.

I don't believe AE is killing the game exactly. Just that it's destroying the replay value for all the new players who don't know any better.
I talked with a guy the other night who had no idea anything outside AE existed.
He thought Atlas was like "A training area for AE!" When I told him about all the other zones he was shocked. Said he'd already cancelled his account because he'd got bored in one weekend of playing...

It's this scenario we're all complaining about.
Keep AE. I personally like it. Theres some quality content hidden within.
Just change up the tutorial a bit so it doesn't sound like it's all you can do.
The whole level 1-50 without leaving the building line is confusing for new blood.

The devs don't seem to agree, as they have left things mostly alone.

Unless you think they're still on the Cryptic payroll and are trying to tank the game so everyone will go play CO?

None of us know the business impact MA has had on the game, aside from some reported comicon eyebrow waggling about numbers being "way up".

It seems that the numbers have been good enough to forgo further knee-jerk reactions to the devs regarding MA "exploits".

Anyone who enjoys the gameplay will stick around and explore.
Think of it as an ongoing 2xp weekend. And note that this last 'real' 2xp weekend did not include the previously de riguer free reactivation.

I see this as a sign of vitality and health, not teh end timez.

The people who's business it is to grow the game and turn a profit disagree, what can I tell ya.

What was that old Karl Marx line....Opiate of the masses? A praetorian AE would be filled with state approved entertainment designed to reinforce the proper value of the state. Aaaaand..... eveyone who enters the building is subject to mind scans to reveal any rebellious thoughts and highlight those who could use "reeducation."

Think of the absolute 50's paranoid communist propaganda magnified 100 fold.

It's all a plot by Jack Emmert, who as we all know hates players and has a Svengali-like ability to convince others to spend millions on projects whose ultimate goal is to be un-fun.

I would love for D_R to do this because I got an instant parody idea as an answer to it.

Please, please, please do it.
