Today is the last day of my free trial and I must admit I totally enjoyed my time and found the people on the Guardian Server very polite and helpful. I have a couple questions if someone would be so kind as to take the time and help me out it would save me the mind numbing task of reading through all the threads I would greatly appreciate it.

My 1st question is Whats the difference between City of Heros and City of Villians and Good Versus Evil Edition? Should I just purchase the Good versus Evil Edition if i'm reading this correctly then I'll get both in one Box.

2nd I was looking over the various expansions, which ones are essential to my game play to get started with and which ones can wait a couple weeks to actually be condusive to to be competitive in the game. I do know I won't be needing the Wedding Expansion LOL.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read my post and answer my questions

Welcome to the game then! Hopefully you'll stick around for a long time!

1) The difference in the boxes is really just the little perks that come with them. If you buy any version of the game, you get both CoH and CoV. So just read up on the bonuses that you get and pick based on that. You can always buy serial codes later and upgrade your account to get all the perks. If you buy a box set after you already have the full game, you can get free time. I'd recommend the GvE edition just for the perks.

2) None of them are essential. The bonus packs are just bonuses. You can get as many or as few as you like. Personally I think the Magic Pack is the best one for your money. The Cyborg and Science don't offer very many perks or costume parts (those they do offer are kind of limited in use). Science does have the supertailor, so I bought it for that. Wedding isn't that bad for female toons; it goes well with the Magic Pack. Valkyrie/Mac Pack is a good one too.

Welcome to the game! Since others didn't say this, UPGRADE UPGRADE your account when you purchase the game. (did I say UPGRADE?) so you don't lose your existing characters.

Welcome. I hope you stick around awhile.

I definitely recommend you upgrade with the GvE edition. You can upgrade with the regular retail versions of CoH or CoV, but GvE comes with some perks that you'll find come in handy. Also, do make sure you UPGRADE your existing trial account. If you "ADD" a new account, then you won't have access to your original characters. The game is also already fully installed on your computer, so simply apply the upgrade code, and you're good to go. No further downloading of the client is required.

The additional expansion packs are just perks, such as temporary powers, and costume pieces. Not having them, at least right away, will not in any way restrict you from playing the full game. You can buy serial codes later to add these packs if you feel so inclined. I personally have them all, but some are more useful than others.

Welcome, and enjoy the game!

If you are paying monthly, then upgrade with all three current boxed editions.

AE will ultimately run you negative $5
Mac will be a net cost of $5
GvE varies depending on if you can find a good deal on an unused copy.

Reasoning for this recommendation is that each serial code includes a month of game time (valued at $15). Additionally, AE includes a choice of either the magic or cyborg booster, valued at $10. Mac edition includes everything in the Valkyrie items pack (another $10 value), and GvE includes everything in the GvE item pack (yet another $10 value).

And just a point of clarification; you can use the "Mac" pack on a PC to get the other goodies in the pack.

Welcome to the game!

Just so that you know what you're getting with each:

  • Plain ol' City of Heroes/City of Villains (both are identical now) doesn't get you any bonus perks. Since it costs exactly the same as one of the later editions, don't buy this.
  • Good vs. Evil edition gives you a month of play time, the Jump Jet power, the Pocket D teleport power, and two costume sets (Justice and Sinister). All in all, I would highly recommend this as your base purchase, as the perks are very handy.
  • The Mac Edition gives you a month of play time, the Mission Transporter power, and the Valkyrie costume set. Note that you can get the goodies (without the month) as an upgrade, and if you purchase the Mac Edition of the game, the license works on the PC just as well, but you'll have to download the client.
  • The Architect Edition gives you a month of play time and your choice of Super Booster I (Cyborg) or Super Booster II (Magic). Note that both of these are available as separate add-ons, and those are the only perks you get with the Architect Edition.

Really, unless you know for certain that you'll never use the Jump Jet or Pocket D teleporter, I think that the best way to go by far is to buy the Good vs. Evil edition, then upgrade as you have the money and desire for more perks.

Here are links if you want to buy the stuff at the PlayNC store:
One last option that most people don't use but you might is that you might run across a City of Heroes game card. These include the license to play, 30 days of game time, and the 30-day Jetpack mentioned above. You don't get any other perks, though you can upgrade with the goody packs listed above at any time. After 30 days, like any other edition, you either have to subscribe using your credit card or buy more game time cards to add time. (Note that a game card and game time card isn't the same. Game time cards only add time to existing accounts; game cards are more expensive and give you the 30-day Jetpack and the license to the game if you don't have one already from buying one of the other editions.)

Clear as mud?

TonyV gives an excellent summary.

One small quibble: if you are playing this game on the PC, and you buy the Mac Pack upgrade code, you do not need to download the Mac client. Just apply the Mac Pack upgrade code to your account as usual, and you get the related perks.

While on the topic of the Mac Pack, the Mission Teleporter is an extremely handy feature. I was initially skeptical of the utility of this power, given the two-hour recharge time, but have since come to love this power. Very, very much!

Thank you all for your wonderful advice, I could not respond yesterday because my Freebie expired so as suggested I created a new account freebie type until next week when I can purchase the game.

It sure is nice to come to an MMO board and not be flamed for asking questions, all be it i'm sure it happens. Sometimes people forget they was new to a game at one time and was probably sitting there scratching their heads as to what to do. Again positive feedback is a wonderful thing and is appreciated.

I do have one more question concerning the packs that give free game time. If I purchase them all at once will that free game time accumulate? So with the game I get 30 days and with certain bonus packs I get 30 if i decide to purchase a bonus pack same time as the game that will give me 60 consecutive days?

Yes, the free time stacks.

But, you can only benefit from one edition per account. If you have the GvE Edition applied, attempting to apply another GvE code to your account won't get you anything.

Also, keep the serial codes you buy. Print them out, write them down, and keep them in a safe place. If you forget your passwords, or somebody figures them out, the serial codes are a way for customer service to verify that you are who you say you are!

Yes. If you go buy the Good vs Evil Edition and Architect Edition and use both to 'UPGRADE' your account, you'll get 60 free days.

fix't

You CAN apply GvE edition, Mac edition, Architect edition, individual booster packs etc., to the same account . Also, each game account is a separate entity under your master account. So you could apply the editions/packs to your various game accounts as desired.

Although, thinking about it, I don't think you can simultaneously apply a booster and an edition that have the same perks (i.e. Mac edition + Valkyrie Booster). Another good reason to go with the edition version over the booster, as usually the edition has more perks than the booster.

I'd agree that the GvE edition is the best one to go for, but if you do find yourself drawn to another version, I'd highly recommend the in-game items pack. The costume pieces are really great and quite versatile. The powers, well, Jump-Pack is quite useful at lower levels, and I don't think I've ever went to Pocket D any other way than with the VIP teleporter, plus the VIP Tiki Lounge has a tailor in it, very useful.

I've got the rest of the packs available at the moment (and the CoV SE) but I'd say the Valk/Mac one has the best costume options. For starters it gives you access to a cape or wings at level 1. As someone who usually makes toons to a particular concept, it's near essential until you get the extra vet rewards.

I thought the same, but it turned out to be the first one I bought, after I realised that I needed a tuxedo tail coat for Energiser, my bunny girl blaster.

What can I say... after spending enough time with the costume creator decisions like that seem entirely rational...

Heh.

I would agree with the OP's sentiments. IMO, the wedding pack is the least useful of the expansion packs. That said, I did buy it, although I did wait several months after its release before I shelled out 10 bucks for it.

All the other expansion packs (GvE goodies pack, Boosters 1, 2 & 3, AE, Mac Pack), however, I have purchased immediately upon their release.

Did it? Odd. In any case it seems to be acting up right now so I've switched to photobucket.

wedding pack was great for my all-arrows Def, Monarcher. The tux made him look so fancy and up-market. The female pieces are also great, and I'll be using them more once more of my girly toons have more cossie slots.

Yes, the time stacks. This is how I wound up with 9 months of game time after prepaying for 6 months. I got a free month with the GvE edition I bought to get into the game initally. I then decided I wanted a couple of the nifties that came with the old CoH and CoV collectors editions. So I bought those online and applied them.
