Hi there.

I'm going to move forward on the assumption, based on your forum join date and post count, that you're new to the game.

As a 5+ year vet of this game, I'm happy to provide some advice:

1. Ignore the AE. There's nothing wrong with AE per se, but it is currently largely being used for power leveling and farming. A new player really ought to have no interest in these activities. IMO.

2. Team up (not in AE). There's some great content out there in terms of story arcs, task forces, trials, giant monster spawns, etc. There's a great big city out there to explore, stories to read, etc., that you'll miss out on if you stick in the AE building.

3. Read the content. Read clues. Read the mission text. Read the souvenirs.

4. You have a level 6 character now. Try rolling another character. If your existing character is, for example, a scrapper, try something completely different, like a controller.

5. Find a heavily used (non farming, non AE) global chat channel on your server. For example, on Champion server it is BMT of Champion. It is a channel devoted to players wanting (B)adges, (M)onster hunting, and running (T)ask forces. I understand similar types of channels pretty much exist on all servers.

Welcome to the game! Enjoy the content, enjoy your characters, and the leveling will take care of itself.

The best way? THE BEST WAY? It's not AE. Leveling in AE is the easy way. For experienced players, AE is a way to jump start to the level they want to start playing a new hero/ villain. The best way for new players is take the harder path to leveling. Do the content in the game the way it was meant to be played before Mission Architect. At your level, you should be joining teams in King's Row or the Hollows. Run contact or police band/newspaper missions. Learn how to play your toon as you also learn how teams and different ATs mesh and what tactics are good or bad.

Actually Dead, no matter which way you choose (AE, PL, SK, ect.) larger teams = more xp= faster levelling. All have their plusses and minuses.

AE is the newest and possibly the easiest but you miss out on a lot of the official storylines and (IMHO) a lot of the best parts of the game.

PL, or Power Levelling is more or less riding along with a higher lv player or group and just getting free xp. Not my chosen method of play but, to each their own.

SK= Side Kick (or Lackey on villain side.) is joining forces with a more powerful player who brings you up to just under their level. A great way to learn the game and get some good exp. At your level, this can power you up into the teens pretty well.

I may be being a bit simplistic here but the basic formula holds. Large teams=more XP=faster advancement.

Thanks so much guys, this is a lot of help.

Oh, forgot to say it.

Welcome to the City.

We're a pretty casual bunch here (mostly.) There's more than one way to play. Try them all out and then go with the one that works for you.

Actually, your initial assumption is mistaken. AE is the *FASTEST* way to level up. "Best" is a value judgment and many people honestly feel it's a lousy way to level up because you miss all the content written by professional game designers rather than farmers.

In many games, the 'real action' starts when you reach max level and can do group raids, special content, etc. THIS IS NOT ONE OF THOSE GAMES. Why do you want to level up? Are you here to create a bunch of level 50's for a bragging contest or are you here to play the game and have fun? Quite frankly, much of the content in AE stinks and much of the activity in there is simply boring farming.

The stuff you can do in this game at level 50 is EXACTLY the same stuff you can do along the way as you level up. In fact, there is some content that you CAN'T do at level 50 unless someone else with a lower level character helps you (Safeguard and Mayhem missions).

It's your $15 per month and you can spend your entire gaming time in the AE building if you like. Take note, however, that most of the veteran players *DO NOT* spend much time in AE. It really isn't that impressive compared to the rest of the game.

As for leveling, what's the big deal? I spend most of my time playing a level 50 character that I got to 50 long before AE existed. I'm not here to level - I'm here to have fun and play with friends.

This is a good point, and dovetails with my point above about "teaming up." I should have mentioned it to the OP, but yes, being in teams does provide a bonus to xp (i.e. being in a team of 8, for example, doesn't just dole out the same xp, times eight, that a player running solo would gain).

As a rough example from my in game history...

I've had more than a few times when I've joined a pick up team that we brought up to eight players. The team then just started doing whatever came along, newspaper missions, story arcs, street sweeping, what have you. Usually I'd gain a level or three in just an hour or two of play (this would be in that long mid 20's run.) More importantly, I had a great time doing it and didn't even notice the time.

It's all about having fun. If you're not playing to have fun, don't bother.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet, but finding a good SG is a great way to level up. They can offer regular teaming(in AE and out), advice on your build, and just general support.

I'm not sure what server you are on OP, but try your server's forum for a good SG. There are a lot of helpful people in this game that would love to show you a good time(in a non dirty way).

If you keep in mind AE will be there when you hit 50 still your in good shape. many of the original content gives badges and cannot be redone without having to go back through the flash back missions (which are a pain since they delevel you temporarily to do them). The newspaper missions lead up to bank missions which can be tons of fun (Red side its "SMASH EVERYTHING!!!!" how can you NOT like that? :P) and can level you quickly. another way is to (as mentioned) join a SG and go grouping with them (Sg's being like guilds if you didnt know) and that can get you decent exp.

First character however i would suggest not power leveling, though there is nothing wrong with AE content (Some of the developers choice ones are fun) and it can net you tickets to get recipes to sell or use. Nice for those 'akward' level gaps or when you wanna try something eles. I just wouldent use it to P-level since you wont really learn a thing about how to play your character

Quoted for truth for the OP. Leveling is not the object of this game, really. This game is not meant to be a console game where you click and click and click and click and click and click and click and click and click and click and click and click and click and click and click and click and click and watch your XP and gold numbers climb and climb. You can play it that way, but you're missing out on other built-in areas of the game - sort of like going to the salad bar and only eating the croutons.

There is more to (CoH) life than collecting croutons.

The way I see it, the journey is as important as the destination.

It's not about finding the fastest way to level up, but to have fun in the game.

Find a character that you enjoy playing. You'll be 50 in no time.

You don't need to rush to level 50. Powerlevelling is a very bad idea- you'll reach the endgame with very little game knowledge and a character you have no idea how to play, and you'll likely find yourself kicked from most teams. 50s are expected to have game experience and to know what they're doing.
