Fun Tanks?

Well, with August being Tank month (heh) it's about time I make my first tank. So I'm trying to decide on power sets. Everyone seems to have different opinions on this one, so I'm turning to good ol' Champion for advice here.

I'd like a primary and secondary that are 1) fun to play, 2) fairly solo-friendly and 3) will be decent fun in endgame pvp.

I know fire / ss is supposed to be a blast, as are a few other combos, but I'm not really up on the changes tanks may have undergone in the last few issues.

Opinions?

WP/EM or Invul/EM meet all of your specifications pretty well. If you're going for pure tankage, an Ice/Fire or Stone/Stone is the way to go. But really most combos on tankers work well.

I have found both EM and SS combined with Invul to fit those so you can look into those if you want. I'm not to familiar with the other sets.

Concept wise as well as versatility, you can't go wrong with Super Strength and Invunerability. It will always be my favorite.

Wow, fast advice!

And this is why whenever I make a toon on another server I feel like a cheating dirtbag. :-)

Normally, with today neing Tanker Tuesday, we would alll be getting ready for in instead of being in here. Since the QA team seems to be made up of the kind of retards that can't determine if a patch is ready to go live, we're all in here waiting for the game to come back up and try to salvage our event that they seem hell bent on hindering...

Try Shield Defense and see if you like its damage potential.

Shield is the one unknown to me as far as Tanks go. I have a Shield/SS at 18 and its still touch and go right now, but that could just be because of my inexperience.

Highest tank I have todate is a stone/axe tank. ( I tend to get as much firing at me as I can while everyone else then out the numbers)
My tanker tuesday tank is SD/mace (I kinda wish I went with SS in place of Mace)

for the off server events I been getting a lot of WP/DB

I'm partial to Invulnerability/Axe. I was able to solo most anything, and still be at least semi-effective on a team. But as others have said, go with what sounds fun to you. I went Dinah's route when I created Bert and went with what fit the theme of the character.

I'm no tank expert but my sd/mace is pretty fun and has decent dmg out put and great survivability and is very soloable if ur into that sort of thing.

The only Fun Tank is if you find Tanks fun. If you go into it expecting to tank then it will be fun. Expect to try to hold agro, that you need to spec your defense more than anything else, that solo is possible only barely. Too many people build Tankers trying to be something else and all that does is cause people to hate grouping with you. Its like blasters wanting to be scrappers.

My build is Inv/Super and he is fun because I built him and expect him to tank. I find it fun making sure that the attackers stay on me. I take it a personal affront when someone gets hit instead of me (unless they are being stupid). I want to make sure any healer in my group is bored or too busy doing damage.

The only thing I would add to this is that you have a dual-build option now. Make one for tanking and the other for soloing, then switch back and forth.

Hey Shay, i would try a dm/sd scrapper and give those tanks something to work towards. I you can just roll and sd/dm tank and have just as much fun.

I've heard Shield Tanks are fun. I haven't yet partaken.
I do know that Dual Blades is a fun Melee Set, but you can't mix the two.
I have no idea how either work for PvP.

On the other hand.....
My Ice/Axe Tank is not often touted as the most fun or effective mix out there. But, I love that character. I love getting into character and doing some light roleplaying. The point is, if you find a concept that you like, it can make even some of the most boring powersets fun.

Shaytanah,

I really love my Shield/War Mace, Riot Shield. I dressed him like a riot cop and I think I enjoy the powers and the animations more than the actual function of the toon.

Some of the gems in that pairing include Shield Charge, which is ridiculously good fun... the knockup (not a typo) in Jawbreaker makes you want to slot it purely for Accuracy and Knockback... and Crowd Control and Whirling Mace are just fun powers in the middle of a mob.

Just rolled up a Shield/Stone tank this morning. Pretty fun so far.

For what it's worth I rank tanks fun as follows:

1. Sheild
2. Ice
3. WP
4. Inv
5. Fire
6. Stone

(never played DA on a tank) YMMV. SS is my favorite secondary (used to like EM, pre-nerf), again, YMMV.

Infinity and Victory mostly
dUmb, etc.
lolz PvP anymore, Market PvP for fun and profit

Wow, alot more people have a shield/mace than I thought..

What they are saying is true, fun to play and very survivable.

Easily soft-capped as well. Run around and shield charge + Crowd control anything is always good fun.

Other sets.. I just rolled a Ice/SS from advice I received from other players on BMT, so I'm not sure if I can get behind it and say it is fun. Looks like crazy fun though. Should be interesting.

Well my first an only tank is a Shield/BA and i LOVEEEEEEEEEEE her!!

Dark Armor tanking is fun. DA/Mace is nice disorient synergy... and those blue mitos in AE... cake. (DA has built in fear and end drain resists). Plus OG is annoying in PvP because its always there, even if just for a moment, its a great chain breaker for those you can keep in melee.

I got a ice/fire tank to 50 and had a blast the whole time. I can see the drawback for ice on signiture TFs like Statesman because if the reliance on defense, but overall, great fun and lots of AoE.

My son started a dark tank for 2x weekend and it is already lvl 32. I played it and the fear cloak is awesome. Don't have a good handle on it's tanking abilities yet but for one mission it was real fun.

(I also tried fire, stone and shield tanks but couldn't get them past lvl 10 when I found the Ice tank fun. Might remake the shield with a mace. Can't remember his secondary right now.)
