Good marketing, a good fanbase from the Warcraft games and other Blizzard fans, the snowball effect, a presence in e-sports, merchandise and a large amount of player-based tools and UI Mods all help, plus WoW has been polished till it gleams.

its clearly done something right or it wouldn't be the monster that it is.
[/ QUOTE ]Yeah, it's called a well supported and relentless marketing campaign covering TV, internet and printed media. Only EvE rivals them on the internet marketing and almost matches them in the printed media, nobody matches them by having a TV advert.
You can bet that these days the most common first sight of an MMO is WoW.

I fail to see how having a good marketing campaign is a bad thing? seems to be a very good decision but i suspect there's more to WoW success than simple marketing
[/ QUOTE ]I didn't say it was a bad thing. I'd be overjoyed if CoX had half the coverage WoW does. But it doesn't, that's why WoW is a "monster" and CoX is an also ran. Even the likes of the BBC use WoW screenshots for generic MMO news articles. In the mainstream printed PC games media it's rare for an issue not to have something on or about WoW (at least one full page advert is a guarantee regardless), when was the last time you saw a CoX advert or an article that wasn't about a new issue release? Have you ever seen a CoX advertising banner on a website?

First of we seem to be going of on a bit of a tangent and i do agree that CoX having even a fraction of the marketing that WoW has had would be lovely cant recall the last time tho it appeared quite regularly in PC zone (or was it gamer) at one point and yes I've seen the odd banner in the past.
But back to why i posted in reply to SinergyX whats wrong with holding WoW up as a standard in MMOs its done a lot of good for MMOs in general and brought them to a wider audience anything that helps brake the idea that video games are something that only children and geeks take part in is a good thing in my view.
and now moving things along whats wrong with using CoX as it stands the now as a comparison for CO.
CoX is COs closest competitor (and vice versa) It seems only right that CO should at least try to match CoX no one in there right mind is going to compare CoX 5 years ago to Co now when it comes to purchasing and reviewing the game.
and if for some bazaar reason your going to base your purchase on a 5 year age gap you have to work it the other way as well as CoX is going to just stop developing so by the time CO makes up its 5 years content CoX is also going to be a further 5 years down the line (yes i believe it will exist 5 years from now)

Holding up WoW as a standard is not a wrong thing to do, clearly it has proven that Blizzard knows what people like and how they are triggered to go and try their game. They had the initial playerbase already sorted before teh game ever even started, namely the VAST playerbase of the Warcraft games.
That said, I have at several times attempted to see though the horrendous characters and ultimately limited costume options (as everyone more or less looks the same..) and never got through it any further than maybe two or three nights after just getting irritated. Because there is one thing that I do feel that it misses and that's character diversification. Every Orc is dressed like the one next to him, because it's the 'uberest'. Still, they market well, there is no denying that and people do like the genre. It certainly generated a wider spread of awareness. Also to gaming addiction, but that was there before WoW...
As for the question what's wrong with with comparing CoX now to CO 'Soon', there's nothing wrong there.
CoH (there was no CoV) then and CoX now are way different from eachother in many respects. I remember just after launch making a blaster and working my nuts off to get to the fabled point of grabbing a travelpower! I was so happy I could fly! Nevermind dropping out of the air a zillion times while blasting away and draining endurance like squeezing a sponge, but I had fun. And then the content eventually ran dry(ish) for me, since I was quite solo oriented (time restrictions abound back then) and I left for a bit to come back with CoV coming out. I had missed a couple things in between.. quite a few things actually, so a new game for me, both hero side and now vill side too! First ever 50 was a completely solo'd MM with zombs. Took me well over 2 years lol
CO will start off as that game from 5 years ago. It will be great at first, but in a short time, the base content will start to wear thin for a lot of people used to established MMO's. If (When) CO survives that first wave, and content gets added and bugs fixed and and and.. eventually CoX will have competition on their hands, but for now, I'm not too worried.
For me it's a bit like the next version of Windows. I'm not touching it with a ten foot pole if it's not had it's first major fix..
The 5 year gap is that, 5 years. Nearly 5 years before that, I played Anarchy Online. If a new sci-fi in that style comes out now, it will have hell on its hands contentwise. There have been so many additions to AO in that time, no new game will compete with it other than through a newer engine with better graphics. But looks aren't content as far as I remember..
And as AO still stands after all that time.. yeah, I do believe that CoX might make ten years as well. But how many of us will then still be in this game?

don't buy PC mags often, but the last time i saw CoH in a pc mag, was just before christmas 2007 in PC Zone. had the DVD edition box as a free gift and a back page not exactly glowing mini review to accompany it. that's what finally got me into MMO's, well, monthly subed ones at least... had played GW and a few other free ones i found online, crystal blue (Or some such) and a few others. i did try out FFXI but got uber bored with it after just over a month. I'd heard about CoH years before and ws interested but was turned off by the subs (1. couldn't afford them back then, 2. why should i buy a game that i have to keep paying to play that may not be around in a coupkle of years time?) so tried to console myself with Frredom Force, that seemed to offer the same amount of customization of CoH... sadly, it was far from it... the gits! Nice power customisation... but cossies? Bah! When i finally could afford the subs, and come to terms with paying them, i couldn't find it anywhere in the shops. thus when browsing the magazine racks in a local WH Smiths and saw CoH on the cover... i snapped it up quite sharpish!
I played through my free period and towards the end was getting a little anoyed that a lot of the cossie pieces i saw others using that i didn't have were from the CoV or GvE editions... i sought it out and bought it... and i have never looked back since and i am going to be here till they finally switch the servers off because i am the only person running round PC/RI!
Then it's time for them to get off the cross, use the wood to build a bridge, and get over it.

What, doing something completely and well pays dividends and lets you rule the world?
I don't like the gameplay of WoW but at least they polish things properly and don't release a feature half-done to finish off later (unlike issues 13, 14, 15 and what looks like 16).

I think that the Mythbusters have proven that is possible to do so, provided you add water and rub a lot..
But true, last issues here have needed backmaintenance. But.. WoW is very good in downloading stuff in the background. That shows when you go for a trial account. It just lets you login and then downloads content as you go. Who's to say that they do not use that same method for fixing their own halfbaked not-so-shiny because too little water added and rubbage dung?

It helps WoW that they have 4 times the development team and 10 times the budget CoH has, and have had from the start.
