Have we got more selfish?

So about 30 minutes ago I advertised on the Union badging/event channels and Steel broadcast that I was about to run the midnighter club access mission - so shout up if you wanted in. I did the mission with a full team (though granted 3 of them were me!).

What struck me as odd was that one of the team members seemed surprised that I offered the badge mission for free...

This made me think - in the good old days (ok - 2 to 3 years ago) I remember seeing several badge runsbeing offered. None of them ever charged - though often people running the low level badges would be very grateful for a couple of thousand INF towards their enhancements. I know this partly as I've never asked for payment, but did accept small tokens of gratitude from lvl 50s wanting their spelunker.

These days I don't notice the calls on badging channels for spelunker or other lowbie badges (aside from mayhem/safeguard which need a low character to get the mission). This is a shame - back 2 years ago it was possible to get the Atlas medallion at lvl 20-25 with only a little trouble, even if you missed the spelunker mission yourself. Now it seems expected that you wait until you're high level and bother Ouroboros'ing back to the "Save the Mystic" mission.

And the surprise of some of tonights team at not being charged makes me wonder if it's usual for people to demand an entrance fee to badge missions...

So: have the existence of flashback and the need for INF for the market made us more selfish?
Or: have I only just noticed my rose-tinted spectacles make even 2-3 years ago seem a happier place to be?

I just wondered.

Given that it's now easier to get the missions required for those kinds of badges because of Ouroboros, I would have thought it'd have been less likely for people to charge now because of the higher availability.

I've never been asked for inf for such a mission, and I can tell you if ever I was, I'd promptly leave it.

It could be more to do with people no longer doing the badge missions. I no longer do spellunker on the way through cause all that mucking around with low level contacts and trying not to out level it is farm more effort than hitting 25 and going back through Oro. I haven't got more selfish, I have got more lazy.

I've never charged, or been charged, inf for a mission. Well unless you include the time I said "If you want me to change the difficulty again you can damn well pay for it" but that was back in I4 or I5 anyway and more frustration than profiteering

As said, people tent to use Oroboros for the accomplishment badges that are attainable.
On Sals Badgehunters there are more tf starting. However I too wish to see more announcement when one has a badge mission, then simply tfs there.
Apart from TF's the other "normal" badge type to announce are Safeguard/Mayham badges, or special hunt types (overseers, Fake Nemesis, cov outcats... etc) and the occational GM's.

I would not demand any influence (although I have been given tips in the past (pre-oro)) so demanding payment for it is just.. meh in my ears. And wonder what kind of people that would be

The idea of asking inf for such a thing is alien to me. I am a villain, not a merchant.

But I think ouro changed the need to do much of those missions. Which is a good thing of course but with the penalty that resources like Sals Badgehunters or Defiant Events are primarily TF search channels nowadays.

Edit: I have tried a few times to set things up for hunts and the occasional badge mission. I noticed that there wasn't much enthusiasm for them. Which makes me wonder if I should continue offering them. I find I am less inclined to bother.

I find the market, the drive for Inf etc an alien concept. I play this game to have fun. Badges are nice, and occasionally I will go out of my way to get one, but I wouldn't pay for a team, or expect anyone to pay for a team. I'll always give my last wakie to a dead guy (and I use wakies a LOT), always give that spare enh that I can't use away.

It's just a game.

That would be my thoughts on this too.

Off the topic, the ninja topic change brought something to mind. I made chips last night by cutting them then rolling them in salt and flour before frying them, and hot damn they were tasty. The extra flour increases the amount of oil the chips can take on, though, so need to drain well. The chunkier the chips the better, also.

I don't think we have got more selfish.

I think you have just got rose tinted specs on from old days. Normally a mate or supergroup would shout out if doing a badge mission and would join if needed it but I do remember people used to charge for some badge missions. I suppose with not much to spend your inf on people didn't mind so much especially as often it lead to an accolade.

I would have thought it is mostly redundant with the flashback system but nothing wrong with trying your luck.

yip thing much the same, never charged or even thought about charging anyone for a badge mission, is jsut nice to offer badge missions to any who may need it.

And often still dropping high level enhancemetns onto lowbies as well as offering them inf if they need it to get them going.

I think alot of the CoH community with the introduction of WW a while back became a bit more selfish and a lot of the giving seemed to stop.

As for the badge missions many do Oro them now, i think was rescuer was only one ive had to Oro recently as i normally do try pick up the contact at the appropiate level to do the miss with the appropiate chars, and gladly offer it up as well on SG forums and global mainly when i plan to do the miss.

My own experience was that it was more common to join groups of relative strangers broadcasting the badge on global channels, with the odd one through SG coalition or zone broadcast.

I can't recall anyone ever asking me for payment for a badge mission. I'm sure that some people would have, but I didn't think it was common. What surprised me was the other player being surprised that I wasn't charging, which I take as an indication that they expect to be charged. This makes me think that the practice of charging for badge missions may be more common now.

Heck - I notice on the US forums that a US SG was more or less extorting it's members, so maybe we're lucky if we just have people charging for badge missions.

Heya JD -

You can have my lobster.. oh.. SELFISH.. sorry!

Seriously tho ...

I'd always run a badge mission for nothing, and i never expected anything in return for going along to someone elses, or expect to pay to 'assist'. It's not difficult to gain inf with the use of the BM / CH anymore, even at lower levels, and inf transfers through SG's seems fairly standard too.

I do think because im part of the 'originals' so to speak, i've seen things change. But still, i'd never expect to gain anything except the badge from being in the team.

JD im in aggreement with u, i usually get the spelunker mish on most of my toons at lvl 10-14 then do it about the lvl 25-30 area. I dont ask for inf i dont care about inf. Its an absolute disgrace that ppl charge for the accomp badges and major badges like that are needed for accolades and such

I call out most of the time when i do badge runs like JD does. and also i miss the plentyful of TFs that used to start at 3am and past

I cant say I've ever paid or asked to be paid for a badge, what I HAVE been known to do however is, in the event of a spectacular team wipe, split my mission bonus between the team.

Inf cant clear debt, it does make it easier to forgive an appalling mission wipe.

Personally asking inf for inclusion to a badge team isn't good badgehunting. If ANYONE sees a mission badge that they are being charged influence or infamy for, put a shout up on the various badging channels and I'm sure either someone will stump up the same mission, or offer an alternative method of access!!!

If you are on Union, contact myself on my global and I'll always try and come up with something.

the payment that ppl use to ask for or demand came out when the accolade bonus was added and all the lvl 50 toons had no access to get the missions required, some ppl use to offer large amount of inf over broadcast for these mission. then it died down once everyone that needed the badge on there high lvl toons had it. now its not needed coz of Ourobo.
