WoW copies CoX?
It really is possible to like both WoW and CoH. They are not mutually exclusive. Both have strengths and weaknesses. I'm not sure why ppl get so petty about it. For myself, I'm looking forward to dual specs and Ulduar in WoW, and MA over here. good times for me

I've tried both. I tried WoW.....twice....and hated it both times. Not so much for the game, but for the people on it.
First time i tried it on and off for a full month that you get for buying the game.
In the full month, not one person spoke to me, not one person invited me to team, not one person offered any help or advice on the broadcast channel when I asked about how to use a new weapon.
I tried to form my own teams only to discover there was no SK system (dunno if there is now, not looked) and promptly got insulted by someone for asking if there was a team space. The game was VERY grindy, constantly being asked to kill 20 of this rat and 20 of that wolf, etc.
Needless to say, I wasn't impressed.
Went back about a year later on a friends reccomndation for a 14 day trial. Despite having friends now playing it I think I only managed to team with them once hen they rolled some new toons to team with me, but after that was left to it as they were busy teaming on their higher levels and couldn't join in, still no SK system. Again, 2 weeks of grinding and boredom.
Came back to CoH.
Tonight, I logged in on a lvl 4 hero, set myself to LFT and got an invite in 5 mins, spent a good hour or so having fun on my new scrapper, TechnoSword, and enjoyed myself a lot, even got chatting in tells to one of the team mebers about our kids.
Now, you tell me which wins: D

See that's the thing, WoW is very hit and miss as far as getting in to it. I tried it I think twice (Pre-Naxx and again just before the Scourge Invasion event leading to Naxx) before finally getting in to it on my third go round (a few months after TBC launched).
I think there's just friendlier servers and ones that are more... befitting the stereotype of MMO Jerkbaggery. Sadly with the bajillion servers they have and with the population numbers on them, there's a good chance you'll get idiots at least some of the time.
CoH is a far friendlier game, though I think that's more to do with the size of the community (ingame and out of game), rather than the genre.
I an currently enjoying a session of WoW'ness during a break from my beloved CoX.
For some reason I struggle to apply myself with the dedication needed to more than one MMO at a time, it seems to be a co-ordination thing for me when the controls and graphics are so different.
I agree about the achievements being a copy of our badge system, 'stolen with pride' I think should be the terminology used. For the record the WoW system of recording them is very good.
I have managed to spark the interest of a number of guildies though when chatting about my other MMO on vent, so maybe I could be an underground recruiter.
They are fascinated most of all by the possibility of 'adjustable boobage'.....who would have thought it eh

I just can't get WoW at all. I even resubbed a few weeks ago and started playing my 20-something Warlock again. After a few hours grinding wolves and bears and spiders (oh my) solo I just gave up again. It's like playing solo CoH and street hunting all the time. And some of the quests where you have to kill specific enemies in tight locations (a Mine) resulted in me getting ganked by 3 enemies at the mine entrance repeatedly.
The only social interaction I had was with one guy would did a chicken emote at me while I was waiting for some boss to respawn for another quest, and some chap who seemed to be throwing out blinds just so he could gabble at us in some foreign tongue and didn't seem to understand English.
I could see it being fun if you managed to get regular teams, some of the locations are pretty cool, but that's rare than hens teeth (probably the only thing someone didn't ask me to gather 10 of when I was playing).
If it means anything, I deleted two warlocks at level 10, could never get into the class. Try a hunter, they're easy
Also... don't play alone; I was lucky to play with friends over in WoW land - I only ever solo'd when I wanted to, it makes a huge difference, same with WAR now.
I agree with Jawdropper, it's perfectly possible to like different games for different reasons, for example I spent a lot of time in WoW and now WAR, wishing there was sidekick system. (There is one in WAR..but, and you really have to admire the sheer stupidity of their marketing department for this, it's not a widespread feature - its a marketing reward unlock.)
I liked WoW when i played it. But there was one thing which i sorely missed.
Character Customization. Sadly everyone looks the same pretty much. Granted i managed to get a pretty unique look for my druid, i was actually able to color coordinate my outfit, i looked fab! But i knew it wouldn't last long :|
If i could tailor my character appearance more without losing precious stats i might be playing it still.
They have a lot of good ideas, and some bad ones.

Yep, I did have a blast before doing one of the instances (whatever they're called, the one in the Orc city) with a 5 man team and I could see it being great fun in a regular team.

My issue with WAR was mainly the sucky framerate on my laptop (curses Sony and NVidia for not regularly releasing Laptop Driver updates) and a lot of the classes didn't really appeal to me, plus the server population took a nose-dive after the 1st month. And again the class I ended up wanting to play seemed a bit gimped (Magus. I've a thing for summoning things to distract the enemies while I DoT them to death). I might retry it now there's a new patch out and see if it's any better. Socially it is better than WoW, much easier to join a random PuG.

The one with 11 million subscribers?
Seriously though, I understand about the troubles getting into the game, I too took ages to get into it, I first tried it late 2006 and only got into it seriously summer 2008, flitting on and off it between then. I also agree about the lack of teams, but I would stress that this is something that is much less true pre end game. At the moment teams are prolific in Northrend (the games highest level continent) pre the maximum level, and pretty much everything that you do at lvl 80 is team orientated. I'm now part of a really decent (small) group of ppl who can have a lot of banter and kick [censored] in game, but I do remember the tedium of leveling up.
Re grind: I echo the sentiments of a previous poster (sorry forget who it was) in that CoH too is, essentially a grind. Enter instanced zone (Warehouse, office block etc) kill everything in sight, click glowie, rince and repeat.
Don't get me wrong, WoW fails in its lack of teaming pre lvls70-80, whilst CoH is brilliant for that and the sidekick system is something that should be in every MMO imo (no it is not in wow, much to my annoyance), but there is a lot that it does very well; there is more to do beyond simply fighting, it has greater freedom for those who want to RP or PvP with their own servers, some genuinely impressive scenery despite the cartoony graphics, boss encounters with a difficulty beyond stack debuffs and tank n spank etc etc.
I re-emphasise my previous statement that both games have strengths and weaknesses and it is facile to presume that, just because you simply do not like a game (or have not given it time) that it must be a bad game.

It's not only the game that keeps the 11 mill subscribers in. When you really look at it and you would only play it for the game. The subs would transfer to a more modern clone like Lord of the Rings... a game that has the same interface as WOW but with better graphics and faster movement and a better community/chat interface.
No... Players generate new players. The community keeps the game going. It is also what keeps the older versions going. WOW is basically a clone of Ultima Online. That is 2D and is still being played. An MMMO on its basic level is just a chat room with something else to do aside of chatting.
When you have 100.000 subs you can't really affort losing 1000. I am sure that Blizzard will not even blink about losing 1000 subs. The main prob is advertizing here... Issue 14: Mission Architect will finally come with a new box on the shelves. That will influence subs on COX. It is a shame that it is a bit late as Champions Onlinecomes out the same month. CO will be the only super hero game aside of the long-time leader in this field COX. It is brand-new with better graphics and engine. And will for sure draw subs away from COX. Let's hope Issue 14 can withstand some of that.
Just my 2 cents... I have played a WOW trial and was hating the movement speed and the graphics. I have also played Ultima Online for a long time and tried a bit of Lord of the Rings. I have been in COX for over 2 years now.. and planning to stay unless Champions Online is awesome beyond believe.

I clearly remember them saying it would come on the shelves. Will do my best finding that post again. But even then.. a limited distribution in the US is still 'out on the shelves'. i just hope they will bring it out worldwide as box. It is not good advertizing to see 4-6 different MMMO's in a shop and no COX.
If CO comes out later.. that can only be good. I read they are trying for the same month. But release dates on MMMO's are always speculation. We will see.

I totally agree, in the case of WoW, success has very much bred success. As the only mainstream MMO (I doubt I am being controversial callingit that), it has been able to attract customers normally outside of the MMO market. However my comment about subscriber level was merely a tongue-in-cheek response to a rhetorical question about which MMO "wins". My real answer has always been that neither one wins, both are good at different things and it is possible to play, enjoy and support both games.
Also, I believe that GR has stated that i14 will not be getting a boxed release in the EU. So the dire lack of marketing continues.
Edit: Beaten, damn j00 Neko!!

Actually CO have just adjusted their release schedule from the fairly concrete June to the rather more vague (but, oddly, seemingly sooner) Spring instead.
Since Spring ends mid-June anyway I'm not sure what this means really.

Arrghh.. if so the marketing of COX is stupid beyond believe. WOW is being pushed to every gamer in the world. It is in shops.. on walls advertizing.. on television etc. COX isn't even buyable in the shops at the moment. Almost all boxes where sold out ages ago.
Not that I state that COX would win a competition. But it has been dead in every marketing option around the world.
COX will have to be available as box in every shop that will bring out CO... So that customers can choose between the wto. If not.. all will pick the brand-new CO. Without ever knowing COX excists.

^ This. Pure and simple.
People dont KNOW about CoX. Out of sight, out of mind. Out of mind, out of even an option
NC, seriously, I would reccomend getting your, hah, game together and, more importantly, out on the shelves.

TV adverts would be prohibitively expensive I'd imagine. But something to spread knowledge of the game would be great. Anything would be a help really!

Personally I think one of the most effective, at least on me, are the banner ads I see on varying websites, usually for the free MMO's. They must be making money somewhere as I'm often seeing the same games adverstised.
Try some banner ads on varying online comic strips, even the lesser known ones will work. A lot of them use the subject matter that will appeal to this player base, such as pop culture, comic books, movies, TV etc. How much does you average banner ad cost? Got to be far less than a TV advert or a magazine page, surely?

Now, if more MMO's got the Sk/Exemplar system (Final Fantasy XI has now) I'd be even happier.
[/ QUOTE ]FFXI has a cr*p version though. It only works one way (high to low levels). Give me a SIDEKICK system as well and it would be more balanced. People tend to stick inviting higher level members rather than their peers because they're more skilled. At least in my experience.
That's one of the reasons I love CoX so much. You can team up with just about anybody with decent enough results. No travel powers? Use Recall Friend. Low level? Sidekick and join in the fun! The only caveat is slotting and enhancements, but it's a minor issue unless you've got some crazy level diff, like a level 2 being SK'd by a level 50...
Edit: That word is really censored? On a forum for a game rated 16+? I despair sometimes...

I think you may be stretching a point here Mother.
The simple fact is, while it may not be to your taste, it has and holds 10 million ish subscribers.
And even though its a pretty aged game, those figures have been going up over the years not down.
It's one thing to say it doesn't appeal to you personally. But, to be truthful, I think it's churlish to make a general assessment and say its not a good game because clearly they are doing a rather big something right.

I am more than happy to take the advice of millions of gamers who advise others WoW is a grindfest that takes up way too much of your time to do anything else. That (on top of the visual-look of the game) discounts it for me more than anything.

I dont think the word grind applies to that game anywhere near as CoH. You can log on to a game like WoW and have different types of experiences (with the professions for example) every time you log on. So the grind may not seem as grindish as here when every time you log on you fight fight fight.
