Who leaves the profanity filter on?

Never had my filter on ever. The only times you generally see swear words are when team dynamics fall apart, the majority of which are from PuGs. When the insults fly, I don't rush for the filter.. I rush for the /globalignore function... Just because we can swear, doesn't mean we have too? but then again most of the ppl I team with are of a similar mature age set.

Blaspheming seems stupid though on the filter, especially if you are an atheist or agnostic, like me. What's so bad about saying "Thank God"?

Sometimes it seems ridicilous to what they block...but I think they rather be safe...then sorry afterwards.

It's basically an American filter and you know what American lawyers have done to common sense in that country. They could quite easily have a different (more sensible) filter for us in Europe but they won't. I've heard it said that can't - loads of codswallop. They don't want to. Probably due to expense. But saying they can't when the servers even exist on different continents is ridiculous.

What annoys me most is when people curcumevent the profanity filter deliberately.

Granted the game is PEGI rated 16+, but that doesnt mean that you leave your manners at the door. Granted, i have been known to let slip the occasional f-bomb (even worse, when teamed up with a couple of friends and their young son who whilst does know the swear words and has had to say them on TV before is one of the nicest kids around).

Now saying that, he *does* have the profanity filter engaged, so at least he doesnt get to read my potty mouth.

Just wondering, but how are the french and german profanity filters set up? Just asking, as that would be an idea as to how far the localisation has gone.

It could well be worth looking into. Also another side is that different cultures have varying ranges of what is viewed as "unsuitable" (ie in germany, almost everything to do with the Nazi's including the swastika is not allowed to be shown.. which is why Wolfenstein in Germany had the Iron Cross instead).

More than anything, i would say that its a "time Vs Effort" factor that kicks in, and that what YOU might find offensive another person doesnt, and vice versa.

You cant please 100% of the people 100% of the time, hell you cant even please 50% of the players 50% of the time (or so it appears)

Then again I would be fine with just the "c" word being censored, and the other swear words being left alone... but that cannot happen, i either have *all* the swear words blocked or none at all. I live and learn, and i can

Ties in with all of this, there was actually an interesting panorama last night with Frank Skinner. It was all about swearing in the media. It's on BBC iPlayer if anyone's interested.

I always turn off the profanity filter cause the game tends to censor some words which i don't feel should be censored. And i'm not terribly offended if someone happens to yell out "f**k" if they get their tushie handed to em on a silver platter by something big and nasty.

I try not to use swear words too often, but when i get [censored] off they may slip out, usually in a stream of diffrent languages. There is something satisfying to swear in Finnish .
I tend to say "Puckernuts" instead of "f**k". (Bonus pints if you know where i got it from!).

Bonus pints? Awesome! Free beer!

Ahem. No, I can't recall the reference.

And I always get utterly baffled when the filter "£$^@ at me when I say I'm going to nip out for a smoke.

That's not particularly baffling. In the USA that's a pretty derogatory term for the Japanese. It is however, a perfectly ordinary word in every day usage in the UK with a perfectly benign meaning so there is absolutely no reason for it to be on the banned list for UK players. The whole idea of a global list is ludicrous. I really wonder how many people leave it turned on since it's so useless.

Not the full story.

Nip is also used as a racial slur in British English, not merely in US English.

Nip has a few meanings (as many short words do... that's linguistic evolution for ya) including to break or cut (e.g. nip in the bud) and a drop of alcoholic beverage - which are uses that (for all I know) may be used in US english.

i.e. Used in a derogatory sense it isn't just US english and used in a harmless sense may not be just British English.

I once commented that my team mates MM zombies attack looked awesome. It was just something like "That vomit attack looks brilliant" and it blocked the word vomit. I was a bit annoyed as the word was actually in the description text of the power.

And it looked like I was swearing.

And it turned out the guy I was teamed with was 12 years old to my 40.

And his mum was watching him play, got offended and had a bit of a go at me . We sorted it out in the end though

I can't say that I have heard many people (or any to be honest) use the word nip as a racial epithet. If people want to use a racial epithet round here they use other equally mild ones. We do use nip for going somewhere though. As in " could you just nip up the shop and get me some ****" (which was my idle dads favourite ).

To the best of my knowledge the word "nip" is not used in a racist or derogatory fashion in the UK. I might be wrong, but I have never heard it used in that way. Which is why it surprised me when it got filtered during my first day in the game.

It stems from the word Nippon (being a native name for Japan) I have heard it used in NZ as a derogative term, but you have so many other people to insult over here I haven't heard it used.

Heck - I'm probably going back to the '70s but I have heard it used on multiple occasions as a racial name.

Maybe a search of Alf Garnet's scripts or asking the royal family would turn up something...

Good old Ask Oxford

nip

• verb (nipped, nipping) - 1 pinch, squeeze, or bite sharply. 2 (of cold or frost) cause pain or harm to. 3 Brit. informal go quickly.

• noun - 1 an act of nipping. 2 a feeling of biting cold.

— PHRASES nip in the bud suppress or destroy at an early stage.

— ORIGIN probably Low German or Dutch.

nip

• noun - a small quantity or sip of spirits.

— ORIGIN probably an abbreviation of archaic nipperkin small measure.

Nip

• noun informal, offensive - a Japanese person.

— ORIGIN abbreviation of Nipponese, from Nippon (the Japanese name for Japan).

So, if capitalised outside the beginning of a sentence, it is offensive. At the beginning of a sentence it is ambiguous, but at any other time it is a non-offensive verb or noun.
