Speculation: What is Coming?
Um, yeah, so what?
Next time there's a raid, try flying through them. It's a graphic effect. It does not mean that the walls will be removed and that the shards will all be glued together into a seamless landscape.
I honestly think people don't realise how much effort that would actually be. It isn't just the removing of the zoning mechanics, upgrade of hardware, upgrade to rendering mechanisms, etc. They would have to actually create a huge amount of extra city to fill in the gaps between the Zones.

*Sigh*
I'm not arguing anything here
I was merely pointing out that the statement "The war walls are coming down" from a few years back probably was in reference to this (and the link I posted proves it), and not the zone barriers being removed as some people thought/hoped.
Sorry, I actually misread the start of your comment to the effect that it was a reference to... yadda. Anyway, yeah, sorry. I'm not having a good day.
Comments regarding the amount of effort people forget is needed to do it still stand though. It is a technical problem, but it's equally a large-scale resource problem. Much as it would be rather cool to be able to superspeed from Portal Corps to Salamanca without a break, I can't see it happening.

Given that the current game zones represent around 20 square miles of a city which should cover around 200, I would say calling is a "large-scale resource problem" was putting it mildly.
I really should do something about this signature.
What can I say? I have a gift for understatement.

It would be bloody great tho to be able to travel from one area to the next without load screens your surroundings changing as you go
Ah well maybe some day
That would be nice, but in the meantime I'd settle for a redux of majority of the zone loading intro-pics...they truely are low res, uninspiring and a little ugly in my opinion.
It wouldn't be that bad if you didn't had to zone all the time(which especially is annoying if you are low level...even if you can fly)

I have a question about the logic of a proposed server jump to the USA.
If Unions busy times (activety wise) correseponde roughly with the USA quite (barring the big two servers) times, won't we be jumping from one level of activity to exactly the same level of activety?
If a major gripe about a server merge with union is the fact you would have dupe name issues- wont you have the same problem going to the usa servers?
If, say half the euro population migrated, they would be split across the usa servers so there would be minimal population increase for those servers.
So, my conclusion is simple: Merge defiant and union but (bearing in mind this is the internet, from a corporate perspective keep us all under the same service team.
That way, the major gripe of being neglected would be wiped. Same forums, same website same service.
Effectively Unient (!) would simply become another usa server, the only difference being where our server is housed and the maintainance for that.
No?

I think merging Union and Defiant would be great.
If they open up migration to the US servers i think it will kill the EU dead, and just make the 2 busy US servers busier, because everyone will just migrate to them.
If they control migration and only let you migrate to the less busy US servers, who's gonna bother? Because less lag is the only benefit then.

No. At the moment we have a set number of character slots per server x 4 servers. The states have that x 8 servers ( think it's 8) so from the start have twice as many character slots as us. Added to the fact that 2 of our servers are in another language so that limits it more. If you merge them we lost half our character slots, where as if we merge the 2 server lists we end up with the same number of servers as the US players and more options on which server to play on.

That's hardly a reason to block the idea. They can compensate the merge by giving a player extra slots you know.

And if you have more than 36 characters on a single account between Union and Defiant then you..?
And the name resolution is what..?
BTW - don't think they've ever stated that a server merge would be impossible, it's just a really, really bad idea for the message it sends out. I thought that this thread was trying to speculate upon what the previously-'impossible' thing was that we were going to get.

I think we should split the term 'server' here. WoW talk
They got servers (asia, europe, US) and realms (daggerspine, eary peak, etc etc).
So we got servers (US, Europe) and we got 'dunnos' (defiant, freedom, zudunkft).
In that line, a server merge would do nobody harm, except that people will start shifting around. Names will remain, those who wish to transfer will chose to possiblity their name is taken on another server.
Like u said, a merge between 'dunnos' would be highly unlikely and a bad idea.

Judging from the column titles in the global friends info I think they're called "shards".
Power customisation is probably the best bet for "what has been impossible", practically. The cathedral seemed to be just a bug that couldn;t be found, as far as i understood, but it sits at a number 2 position. I'm very sceptical that they actually will show some "real" new stuff.
A graphical upgrade has been confirmed, but will probably not happen in 2009. It is a *huge* effort, especially in a game using this environment. CCP is still in the process of upgrading their graphics, after 2+ years of work, and that's a *space* game, where there isn't as much scenery, aswell as costumization for characters (yet). I am hopeful they will at least release a character upgrade fairly soon though, since that part of the graphics is running behind on the environment very noticably by now. The customization options offered at the start of the game (especially noticable with "tights with skin") just look plain awful when combined with for example stuff from the cyborg or wedding pack. Or a more simple example, compare the pattern "lightning" with "thorn", to see the difference that around 4 years made in when those patterns were made.
I could drone on about the issues with costumes at the moment, but i think Jay's threads are already bloated enough, but that's most certainly in the top 10.
Other things.... Removing war walls completely is very, very far down the line, but i do think it would be worth it, especially if the couple it to new or even existing missions which are spawns in the open world, rather than instance them. There are however some problems, obviously with making this work. The Rikti War Zone for example.
I don't think speculation would be a very good idea overall... The 2 things with the highest chances of getting (back) in are power customization and the cathedral of pain. Beyond that, i'm not counting on anything.

We have regions (EU/US) and Servers Defiant, Zunkuft, Freedom, etc.
Merging servers is bad IMO, merging regions would be fairly palatable.
The thing is i do think that over all, the gme has to meny servers for the pop, rolling up 8 of the 15 would seem like a good idea.

Totally agree with this, the levels of player 'upset' involved with merging servers and the human administration cost for the devs to complete it would be too high.
what would be great is a nice big cannon, with the end latticed with cheese wire, pointed off a nice big cliff, then an Anti Aircraft gun at the bottom of the cliff I can use to clay pigeon shoot the bits of people that keep asking for FLIPPIN SERVER MERGES that I intend to fire out of said cannon... Is that coming? please say yes!

So fire a cannonball at people who have an opnion?
Sorry, you just took away a basic human right and become very obnoxious.
its just that there are a large number of reasons why it is technicially and operationally unfeasable, server transfers is the best we are going to get in the real world.
The amount of names, account clashes, hardware changes, scripts required, unforseen crashes, the fact that less servers means less choice to play on other server based hardware if there is a problem and on top of that the sheer fact that I can only see one benefit of merging servers ( more players to team with ) means that I'd rather be obnoxious in your opinion than spend months going over this conversation, arguing endlessly for it to be a remote possibility.
Additionally, you have fired a verbal cannonball at someone who has a differing opinion, please be careful when using such statements as it is glarily obvious that my post is meant in a light hearted manner.

Problem is if they reduce the number of servers it will hurt some, who will leave leading to more servers merging...
By putting all the servers in a single list it would mean if you want something quiet you have the option or something busy that too. Free transfers off crowded servers onto quiet and paid back again . Would help even the populations out a touch.

remember an interview with Archon Voss some time back where he said "The war walls are coming down." I was thinking about that just last night, while I was trying to get some cool action flying shots without the walls in the background.
